For the tenth consecutive fall semester, another Lipscomb enrollment record has been broken. More than 4,500 students are getting geared up for the semester that they all have ahead, a record number for the school. Lipscomb’s School of Nursing, the College of Business’ graduate school and Adult Degree Programs have seen double digit increases. “I believe that it is a great thing that Lipscomb University has been expanding for the past few years, especially if we as students and administrators are hoping for the school to gain more support at the national level,” senior Kenny Smith said. In addition, the university has gained an 80.5 percent retention rate with students returning from the last fall semester to this one. That is a three percent increase from the rate of last year and far above the national average of about 70 percent. “Having the recent increase of students this year is an incredible thing, in my opinion,” pharmacy student Brenna Thompson said. “We have the opportunity to bring more individuals into our community and be able to spread the grace that God has for us all within all aspects of our lives. University president Randy Lowry announced a six-year, $375 million investment during the President’s Convocation on Tuesday. A large amount of the money will go towards improvements in residence halls and parking, in addition to creating new programs, renovating and building facilities, providing scholarships, investing in the school’s endowment and creating a mobile medical clinic. “It’s not about the money,” Lowry said. “It’s about a group of people who feel God’s calling to create a unique academy and university that will bless the students who come and bless the community in which we reside.” Lowry listed the many honors Lipscomb has achieved this past year, such as Lipscomb’s recognition as one of 249 Colleges of Distinction and the 13th best Christian college in the United States by Christian Universities Online. Also recognized were the the College of Education’s ranking as second in the nation for teacher preparation, and the athletic department’s winning the Atlantic Sun academic trophy, an honor given to the best academic performance among student athletes in the A-Sun Conference. Lowry emphasized Lipscomb’s role in serving the larger Nashville community. “Beyond the buildings is the recognition that this university wants to be engaged in its community and carry out its Christian call in dramatic and impactful ways,” Lowry said. “I don’t want us to be known just as a community that is engaged. Christian Universities Online, a website dedicated to higher Christian education, ranked Lipscomb among the best Christian universities in the country. The site put Lipscomb at number 13 on a list of 50 and lists the school in the same company as Pepperdine University, Abilene Christian University and Baylor University. “Institutions that are accredited by the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools or are a Council of Christian Colleges and Universities member or affiliate were eligible for the ranking,” writes Kim Chaudoin for Lipscomb’s website. “The ranking considered which colleges offered the highest degree of personal attention (student-to-faculty ratio), selectivity (acceptance rate), financial assistance (percent of students receiving financial aid) and student satisfaction (retention and graduation rates).” The site notes Lipscomb’s variety of academic possibilities, quality of education and the school’s combination of faith in the classroom and...

A new school year means new beginnings, and for social clubs on Lipscomb’s campus those new beginning are on social media. Female social clubs Pi Delta, Delta Sigma, and Phi Sigma have joined various forms of social media in order to promote their clubs. Pi Delta was the pioneer social club to get on social media by starting an Instagram account. The brains behind the account, a transfer student named Sydney Smartt, said her sorority, Delta Zeta from The University of Alabama, inspired her. “Lots of sororities from state schools have accounts, and so I figured why not bring them to Lipscomb?” said Smartt. “I think it gives girls who want to pledge a glimpse at what the club is like and what events they do. It’s also a great way to get info out about prospectives and rush.” Anne Le, Phi Sigma’s historian, had similar reasons for beginning an Instagram account for her club. “I thought it was a good way to reach out to freshman so they can see events and things we do,” said Le. “And it’s also a place alumni can see what their club is up to.” The posts on Pi Delta and Phi Sigma’s accounts usually are from club events and contain information on the club’s event calendar. “I try to post before and after events to make sure people know what’s going on,” said Le. With the amount of students enrolling at Lipscomb growing every year, the chapel office is choosing to grow along with the campus by offering a wider range of chapels that can be attended.The chapel office at Lipscomb University loves to keep things fresh every year, and this semester is no exception. With all the changes going on, it makes sense that this year’s chapel theme is “Journey.” Following along with that theme, the chapel office decided to do something different and add a twist on breakout chapels. Instead of only having the usual offerings that we have had for the past few years, students will now have a wider variety of focus breakouts that they can attend. These ten focus breakouts include various topics like men and women specific groups and a category on how to share your faith. The classes even go as far as offering advice on how to be faithful with your finances. With the more extensive variety, the chapel office hopes to gain interest from students in at least one of the special subjects that are offered. Despite the limited space, the focus breakouts will offer a unique twist to the usual chapel schedule. Students will be able to be more involved and have a more intimate chapel environment due to the lowered amount of crowds. These focus breakouts will be held for six weeks from Sept. 4 to Oct. 9. Lady Bison basketball released the competitive 2014-2015 schedule on Aug. 20. The highlight of the schedule for fans will be the game on Dec. 7 against the Tennessee Lady Vols at Allen Arena. “Hosting Tennessee at home is exciting,” red-shirt junior Danay Fothergill said. “We want to look at it as just another game. We want to use our advantages to be competitive and just have fun.” The regular season tips off Nov. 14 with Georgia Southern and Nov. 16 against Wright State. Both non-conference games will be played in Allen Arena. The highly anticipated Battle of the Boulevard matchup will be played Dec. 2 at Belmont. Before ending the non-conference schedule, the Lady Bisons will travel to Ohio to face Xavier on Dec. 20. After the Christmas holidays, Lipscomb takes on Georgia Tech in Atlanta Dec. 29. On Jan. 5 in Allen Arena, Trevecca will be the last team the Lady Bisons play before Atlantic Sun Conference play begins. The last 14 games on the regular season are A-Sun matchups. “We just want to make sure we end non-conference play after Christmas with energy going into conference,” Fothergill said. Jan. 10 starts conference play against Northern Kentucky in Allen Arena. The Lady Bisons are ready to show they belong in the stacked A-Sun conference.
