With chilly temperatures blowing in Tuesday night, baseball fell to the Belmont Bruins in a midweek game 2-1. Both teams earned 4 hits but Belmont connected a leadoff walk with a double by Drew Ferguson to open the scoring in the third inning. Ferguson would later score on a single up the middle by Matt Beaty. Belmont did not score again for the rest of the game but their pitching kept Lipscomb to only one run which they earned later in the sixth inning. Senior catcher Nick Rome led the Bisons on the night going 2-for-3 with two singles. Although only giving up one earned run, Freshman John Pryor takes the loss on the game. As far as pitching for the Bisons, Coach Jeff Forehand tells Lipscomb Athletics, “Pryor was pretty sharp for the most part. Jamie (Young) came in and got us out of that big jam in the seventh and then Curtis came on and pitched a good eighth and ninth for us.” The Bruins’ hill saw six different pitchers on the day but Chase Cunningham took the win for Belmont. The Bisons head to DeLand, Fla. for a series against Stetson this weekend. The Hatters currently sit at 3-9 in A-Sun play and 14-24 overall. Photo courtesy of Lipscomb...

The dedication of Smith Stadium had the Lipscomb softball team hitting their stride, winning three in a row this weekend against the Mercer Bears at Draper Diamond. The softball stadium was officially dedicated to Michael Smith and his son Derek Smith, who are owners of Rio Grande Fence Company. The Smiths are heavily active in the softball program, giving the university one of the best fields in the Atlantic Sun Conference, if not nationally. The field was dedicated to the Smiths after the 9-1 blowout win against Mercer on Saturday afternoon, and right before the 5-4 win that took eight innings to get it done. Their streak continued on Sunday when they hosted Mercer for the third and final game, and after trailing 1-0, they forced extra innings yet again and senior infielder Kelsey Cartwright drove in the winning run. “Well, yesterday, [Mercer’s pitcher] was jamming me a lot, so I was expecting more in, but the pitch before was out,” Cartwright said. “Thankfully, Paige [Neely] got on to even give me the opportunity, but they came back again with the outside, and I was able to luckily get a hit up the middle.” Neey, the junior infielder who scored the winning run, also contributed heavily on both sides of the ball all weekend for the team. She said both sides were needed in each win. “Their team definitely kept us motivated, Neely said. “They were scratching and clawing, and we just had a motivation to not let them win and that went from defense to offense.” The weekend sweep puts the Lady Bisons at 34-9 overall and 14-6...

The Lipscomb Bisons baseball team took the series over the Mercer Bears this weekend and now sits in first place in the Atlantic Sun conference. After a rain delay on Friday, Lipscomb came out on top 4-2. Mercer struck first with a solo home run by Sasha LaGarde but the Bisons punched back and were winning 2-1 after three innings. Head Coach Jeff Forehand told Lipscomb Athletics that Friday’s game was just a good game between two good teams. “Luckily for us we got some fortunate hits and scored when we had runners in scoring position,” Forehand said. “They made a mistake that gave us one run but it was just a good ball game all the way around.” Saturday’s game resulted in a 2-1 victory for the Bisons to give them the series win. Junior John Allison earned a lead-off walk in first inning and would later score on a sacrifice fly from senior Drew Adams. Junior Grant Massey would also score in the first inning capping off the scoring for the Bisons for the rest of the game. “It was a great first inning,” Lipscomb coach Jeff Forehand said. “Drew and [Austin] Sistrunk had a couple of clutch, situational at-bats for us to get those runs on the board early. But we have to give Mercer credit because they pitched really well after that point to hold us in check. Both teams made some big plays throughout the game, but we were able to hold on for the win.” Redshirt junior pitcher Hunter Brothers got the win giving up one run...

March Madness may be over, but because of Ty Osman II, the ball has not stopped bouncing just yet. March 2013 marked the first of what will now be the annual Ty Osman II 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament, and the time has come around again to host the second annual games. This is an event to honor a young man who lost his life in a car accident in 2012. Ty Osman II is a former Harding student and member of Woodmont Hills Church of Christ, and to honor Ty and his family, Woodmont has invited everyone, both students and adults, to gather in fun competition on Saturday, April 12, in Allen Arena starting at 8 a.m. Ty’s father, Ty Osman, expressed his appreciation for the event. “It’s really an honor to us,” Ty Osman said. “We didn’t put it together, but someone put it together for us because they knew he loved basketball.” The event is free of charge, and all the donations will go to benefit Donate Life Tennessee. Several lives have been impacted since the passing of Osman, as he was an organ donor, and seven people are now using his organs. To encourage others to become donors, the Ty2 Foundation is hosting this second annual tournament to help the legacy of Ty live on. Ty Osman II was a basketball player himself, and his father, family and friends wanted to have a memory that would not only celebrate his life, but bring joy to the lives of those celebrating. “You know, we don’t want everyone to to sit around having a cry fest because...

Caleb Pickering received the Mary Morris Award of Exemplary Service to Society in a ceremony at Thursday morning breakout chapel in Collins Alumni Auditorium. Pickering thanked his family, his church and his mentor, Richard Goode who won the award last year, and he urged students to use their time at school wisely. “At the simplest level, service to God and to man is the sacrifice of your time so that you can give that time to others,” Pickering said. This award is given every year to a member of the “Lipscomb family” who demonstrates a high level of service to the community and to the church. “The criteria for the award is they exhibit a spirit of volunteerism, they engage in meaningful activities in the community to help spread God’s light. They demonstrate a commitment to Christian missions wherever they may be and that they are an advocate for Lipscomb University,” Phillip Camp said before he handed the award to Pickering. Pickering helps Green Street Church of Christ’s ministry to the homeless. The Nashville church’s congregation recently decided to allow homeless people to sleep on its property and sometimes even let them into the sanctuary to sleep. “Even at times when the local government and others are opposing them, they have decided to stand and fight for this,” Camp said. “They try to meet the needs of their homeless guests while also maintaining their dignity and offering them real friendship and real relationships.” Beginning in 2000, the church started partnering with a group of Lipscomb students called “Fools for Christ.” According to the Green Street website, “Every Wednesday hundreds of college students and...
