Charlie Daniels and friends honor Yellow Ribbon students with Scholarship for Heroes Tour

A packed house rocked out to free music for a great cause in Allen Arena Tuesday night as country music legend Charlie Daniels and a host of others headlined the annual ioStudio Charlie Daniels’ Scholarship for Heroes Tour. In its fourth year, the show, always led by Daniels, helps benefit the Yellow Ribbon initiative, a program that pledges to help post-9/11 GI Bill veterans receive an education with little-to-no cost at Lipscomb University. This year, there are around 200 Yellow Ribbon students that attend school. Alongside Daniels, The Grascals, Chris Young, Keni Thomas, Bleach and surprise guest Jason Aldean all played a mix of current hits and classics in order to give the Yellow Ribbon students in attendance an exciting night to remember. Before the show, Daniels met with the Yellow Ribbon students and posed in a group picture. Daniels said that the veterans are brave individuals who endure daily strife all for the ultimate aim of receiving an education. “It takes something that a lot of people don’t have to get out of a bed, to turn off the pain medicine and to walk into a situation where you’re trying to better yourself,” Daniels said. “Just the act of getting out of bed every day is a bigger job than most of us can ever even imagine.” To Daniels, the Yellow Ribbon students – and all those who serve in the military – may have different stories, but all deserve to be recognized in the highest regard for their service to the country. “Everybody’s story is different, but everybody’s got one, and everybody has really struggled to be...

Gov. Haslam to address immigration reform at Lipscomb

Immigration will be the topic of discussion when Gov. Bill Haslam addresses The Tennessee Latin American Chamber of Commerce (TLACC) on Wednesday, March 6, as part of Tennessee’s Partnership for a New American Economy. That partnership is designed to bring together leaders from all political and economic sectors nationwide to raise awareness of what it sees as the economic benefits of sensible immigration reform. Immigration reform is — along with education and gun laws — one of the most discussed topics from both sides of the political aisle. And Haslam has weighed in on the subject before. In a recent interview with POLITICO’s Jonathan Martin, Haslam addressed a variety of topics, including the debate over immigration reform. He said he would like to see a comprehensive immigration reform bill enacted. The event will take place in Ezell 301 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost to attend is $35 for non-TLACC...

Song review: “Only One” by PJ Morton feat. Stevie Wonder

Grammy-nominated keyboardist for Maroon 5 PJ Morton has crafted music for some the biggest and respected acts in R&B, gospel and soul music. Some worried that his gospel-laced, soul-tinged sound would change when he signed with YMCMB last year. He puts those worries to rest with the release of his EP, Following My First Mind. Last Tuesday, he released his new single “Only One,” proving his sound is unchanged. Morton is known putting his silky, soulful vocals with some smooth, jamming tracks, and he has done this with his new song that will be featured on his upcoming major label debut album New Orleans. The song begins with a nice drum lick with PJ’s smooth voice quickly following. “Only One” is a uptempo love song telling the love of his life that she is the only one he loves and lives for. The line that is sure to make anyone fall in love with this song comes in the second verse: “I know that forever is a long time, but there is no other choice in my mind.” It’s guaranteed to make any hopeless romantic fall in love. To accompany beautiful lyrics in the bridge is the sound of some the best horns I’ve heard in years. The production of “Only One” will put you in mind of Stevie Wonder’s music in the ‘80s,  mixed with a few of the sounds of today’s R&B. And that’s to be expected, given that the Motown legend has a harmonica solo on this track, providing accompaniment that only Stevie Wonder could pull off. PJ Morton has knocked it out of the park...

Social media impacts LU athletics

Seeking greater recognition for Lipscomb sports teams, the athletic department is expanding its use of social media. Garner Goode, director of sales and marketing, says LU athletics, while examining all forms of social media, is particularly taking aim at the use of Twitter to represent — and spread the word — about every team. He said he’s working on getting a Twitter account set up for every sports team. There is also one main profile that is @Lipscombbisons that serves as an overall account to post about every team. Goode says that by having individual team accounts, it lets fans follow specific teams more closely. A new program is up and running and can be activated through www.bisonsmobile.com. Go to the website on your smart phone and follow the directions to activate it. This will let you have instant stats right at your fingertips. The Bison Perks is a new rewards system that gives fans the opportunity to win free prizes by attending events and tweeting certain things and using specific hashtags. Scholarship for Heroes Tour boasts a big performance

Charlie Daniels may be sending the devil down to Georgia, but he’ll be back in time to headline Tuesday’s Scholarship for Heroes Tour. “It’s an amazing night,” April Herrington, the assistant director of Lipscomb’s veteran services, said. “You’ll get to see Charlie Daniels perform. I know a lot of the students here are probably not familiar with Charlie Daniels, but he is a great supporter,” Herrington said.  “He has been on this walk with us for four years. Ever since we started, he’s been right behind us to support us.” The concert series first started four years ago as a way to recognize Lipscomb’s Yellow Ribbon students. “That was the original start of the Charlie Daniels concert,” Herrington said. “Then it was called Operation Yellow Ribbon. Now, it’s been changed to Charlie Daniels’ Scholarship for Heroes.” “The concert raises money for scholarships to help pay for students who were not 100-percent eligible for free tuition. The money goes toward them to help supplement their cost so that hopefully, when we raise enough money, they can go to school, tuition free as well.” Herrington said donations of over $30,000 were collected at last year’s concert and Lipscomb was able to award 10 scholarships for the current year. They hope to raise even more Tuesday night. There are approximately 175 yellow ribbon students, so every little bit helps. A reception will be held Tuesday night before the concert for veterans and sponsors. The veterans will also have a special meet-and-greet session with the artists before the big performances. “We have several great performers coming,” Herrington said. “Basically, the concert is going...

Bisons can’t overcome Ospreys in regular season finale

Looking to build on Thursday night’s win over the University of Jacksonville, the men’s basketball team turned in a valiant effort at home Saturday night against the University of North Florida Ospreys (13-18, 8-10 in conference), but effort wasn’t enough to take the win. The team fell to the visitors 85-78 in a game that solidified the Bisons’ bracket seating for the Atlantic-Sun tournament. After a strong start by Lipscomb (leading by six at 14:55), North Florida fought their way back to make it a close first half. That is, until the last three minutes, where the Bisons went on a run, widening the margin to seven at the half. The second half saw more strong play from Lipscomb, holding a 10-point lead with a little more than 10 remaining. Unfortunately, the Ospreys once again chipped away at the lead, eventually taking the top score at 3:30. After this, the game became a back-and-forth of jumpers, layups and free-throws, with the Ospreys hitting key shots at moments, and the Bisons missing when it counted. North Florida walked away from Allen Arena with the win. The Bisons end their regular season 12-17 (7-11 in the A-Sun). Senior Deonte Alexander, who was honored at half court before the game for Senior Night, led the Bisons in scoring with 19, while redshirt sophomore Carter Sanderson added in 16 points. Junior Khion Sankey led the team in rebounds with nine and had 12 points on the night. Sankey said he felt that the team’s shooting percentage in the second half was a cause for trouble. “I feel like we played hard. They just made...
