A 75-year-old professor who rides a Harley is unforgettable for most students. Lipscomb’s psychology department proudly claims that unique motorcycle-collecting faculty member in Dr. Roy Hamley. Hamley, one of the three self-titled “psycle therapists,” rides with his colleagues Dr. Shanna Ray and Dr. Jake Morris on weekends in the spring and fall when the weather is nice. After his son and daughter both bought Harleys, Hamley, who currently has four motorcycles, decided he should join the excitement and live “full throttle.” “I thought if they’re having all that fun, I’m going to find out what I’m missing,” he said. “So, I’ve been riding about 20 years, and I should have started sooner. I wasted a half a century before I started.” Morris and Ray began riding two years ago, after they took a motorcycle safety course together. More than half of the professors in the psychology department ride motorcycles, and those in the department who don’t ride enjoy teasing those who do. Ray said she heard that Dr. Paul Turner, one of her colleagues, was “talking trash.” “He has a bicycle,” she explained, “and he was telling his classes that he’s the only real biker in the department. He was making out like we’re a bunch of sissies who sit there and twist throttle, and you know, he actually has to work.” Ray noted, with a laugh, that the only time she and Morris argue is when they’re disputing who should take the lead when they’re on their bikes. At Lipscomb, there is no shortage of students who dream big. In fact, several students have a strong list of very unique and specific things they want to accomplish before they kick the bucket. These things are typically known as someone’s “bucket list.” Generally, they are specific, detailed dreams that an individual hopes to fulfill. Most of the time, items on a bucket list are distinct to the person who has written them. Lipscomb students are certainly no exception. Students’ lists include kayaking in the ocean using a clear bottomed kayak, getting tweeted at by a celebrity, visiting a home country in Cambodia and more. The Lipscomb volleyball team will hang three banners in Allen Arena tonight in a ceremony during the Battle of the Boulevard event, the university’s biggest athletic rivalry game. The team’s success will be recognized when the Atlantic Sun regular and post-season banners and 2011 NCAA tournament banner are presented. Brandon Rosenthal, the team’s head coach, said he thinks the banners work as a source of motivation for the team. “I think for the girls to see the banners, to see them dropped tonight is definitely a little bit of motivation,” he said, adding that it helps the girls think of “not just your team but all of the people that came before you that helped you get to that spot.” The volleyball team has appeared in the NCAA tournament four of the last five years, and Rosenthal said it’s nice to see the girls being rewarded for their hard work. The three new banners will finish filling one side of Allen Arena, and any new banners will have to be hung on a second wall. “When we initially put them up, I was joking and said, ‘we need to leave room; we plan to win a lot more,’” Rosenthal said. “And here we are. I think there’s no doubt, our girls come in to every season and the expectations are already set.” Rosenthal said Lipscomb is focused on building a successful program, not just a winning team. “With a team, when you lose girls, or when you graduate girls, you have to rebuild,” he said. “With a program, it’s just that expectation coming in. Lipscomb’s men’s basketball game Friday against Belmont has sold out. A limited number of standing room only tickets are being sold through LipscombTickets.com for $10 each. The game is set to tip at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on CSS, ESPN3, and 102.5 The Game. Game Information Doors open at 4:30 p.m. All guests 3 years and older must have a ticket to the game. No ID’s are accepted. All students, faculty, and staff must have a ticket. The first 1,000 non-students through the doors will receive a free t-shirt. Students will receive t-shirts in the student section. Parking Information Shuttles will be running from the David Lipscomb Campus School football field to the front doors of Allen Arena starting at 5:00 p.m. There will be limited or no parking available on campus Friday evening. The only cars that will be allowed on campus from Granny White Pike will be those with preferred parking privileges or needing handicap parking access.
