9/11: The Tenth Anniversary of the day that changed us all

On the morning the Twin Towers fell 10 years ago, our futures became a little less certain, a little more stifled. The anxiety of those first weeks – when it felt like we were living on the brink – has eased, or at least, become so routine that we don’t recognize it for what it is anymore. After all, you can only mourn the loss of life-as-we-know-it for so long before deciding to embrace what is and finding a way to move forward. To understand this is to understand – at least in part – the story of the way students and teachers have adapted to change. The change that was and still is life after 9/11. I know that I don’t speak for myself when I say that the attack felt personal. It was in our faces, in our homes, on our TVs. And most importantly, inside of our own country – on our soil. That was the case for two of Lipscomb’s own – David Hughes, former Special Forces and now Director of the Yellow Ribbon program; and Jon Corley, a student that is a part of the program, set to graduate in May. The attacks on the country hit them so hard – like it did many others – that it was one of the defining reasons they joined the fight against America’s enemies. Jon was 16 when the attacks happened. He says his experience was very different from what most of us went through when the first plane hit the tower. Jon was home alone that day. He was in bed, sick, and was woken...
Tennessee State Fair set to start its 105th year

Tennessee State Fair set to start its 105th year

The Tennessee State Fair has become a long-standing tradition. Held at the Tennessee State Fair Grounds, the fair holds the traditional array of carnival rides, fair food, livestock showings and competitions, live music and even motorsports events, such as the famed Demolition Derby. The fair is a highly publicized event that is a must for any resident of Middle Tennessee. Sophomore Reed Sircy had a great experience when he attended the fair. “I had a blast at the fair,” he said. “The food is great, and the rides are awesome.” The fair is also an excellent way to socialize. Freshmen Grant Sinclair said, “The fair is a fun place to be because there is a lot of stuff to do with your friends.” The fair begins this Friday night, Sept. 9 and concludes Sunday, Sept. 18. Adult tickets are $5 through an advance online sale, and $8 at the gate. Twenty dollars will get you the “ultimate ride wristband” through the advance online sale, but at the gate, tickets are $25 on Monday through Friday and $30 on Saturdays and Sundays. Kroger is currently selling general admission tickets and “ultimate ride wristbands” in advance, as well, for the online price without the hassle of buying them online. Consult the Tennessee State Fair website for further price information concerning the fair itself, Demolition Derby and State Fair Spectacular Auto Race (listed below). The dates and times are as follows (taken from the site): Opening Day (9/9) – 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays (9/10 & 9/17) – 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays (9/11 & 9/18) – 12 p.m. to 10 p.m....

Redbox Report (Sept. 6th-13th)

I think it’s safe to say the day of the video store has sadly come to an end. While I always enjoyed looking around a Blockbuster from time to time, I must admit the convenience of a Redbox is a nice luxury to have, especially as a college student. The one-dollar a night rental service hosts many new releases every week, and on occasion, will bring back an older movie for good measure. Redbox machines are located all over the Middle Tennessee area. As long as you don’t forget to turn your movie back the next day, Redbox is a wonderful, inexpensive way to find enjoyment during the down-time of college. But don’t you just hate it when you Redbox  a movie that really isn’t to your liking? It may be just a dollar wasted, but these days, a dollar wasted is exactly that. I’ve decided to contribute a weekly REDBOX REPORT that highlights one or two new releases that gain the full approval of my cinematic taste. And trust me, I have good taste. So before you make a trip to the Redbox this week, check out these recommendations. RIO (G, 96 minutes-featuring the voice cast of Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, Leslie Mann, and George Lopez) I don’t know about you, but I love a good animated movie now and then. I immediately found Rio to be extremely worthy of my time back when I saw it in late April. The film has a light, breezy feel that flows throughout the runtime. The animation is beautiful, especially in Rio de Janeiro, the voice cast is great, and the...

BREAKING: All of Lipscomb Bisons basketball games will air on 102.5 The Game

Lipscomb’s athletic director, Phillip Hutcheson, announced this morning on 102.5 The Game that all of Lipscomb’s basketball games will be broadcasted this year on the station. “We’ve been looking for a partner for a while now,” Hutcheson said. “Two-thirds of Lipscomb alumni live within this listening area.” Formerly known as 1025 The Party, The Game is now the flagship station for the Nashville Predators and ESPN radio. “Ten of our thirteen guys are from the listening area,” Hutcheson said. “We’re thrilled to be on the air.” Long time play-by-play man Jonathon Seamon will be calling the games, just like always. He’ll have a new color guy, though, since his son, Benjamin, just graduated. Lipscomb is partnering the Jackson Family of companies that will be the presenting sponsor.   We’ll have more, later....

Lady Bisons fall to Western Kentucky in straight sets

This evenings much anticipated match against Western Kentucky went down to a final call in the third set before the Lady Bisons lost 3-0.During the first set the Lady Bisons had trouble blocking Western Kentucky’s kills, and didn’t seem to have an answer for them otherwise. After falling behind early the Lady Bisons lost 14-25 in the first set. The score of the second set isn’t much different, but the Lady Bisons played with more enthusiasm, keeping the game close before losing 15-25. In the first two sets coach Brandon Rosenthal had Abby Fay, a red shirt senior, at libero; in the third set he moved freshman Megan Stout into libero in order to let Fay help current A-Sun player of the week, Katie Rose and senior Char Ursell on the frontline. The Lady Bisons went into the third set with clear heads that helped them get a 10-5 lead midway through the set. After Western Kentucky tied it up at 12-12 the Lady Bisons were unable to recover and lost the set 20-25 on a call where it was uncertain whether or not the ball was tipped out of bounds. The Lady Bisons will be traveling to Notre Dame this weekend for an Invitational before returning to Allen Arena next Wednesday at 6:30 for a match against Austin...
Elliott’s Eye (On Fashion) – Talkin’ New York

Elliott’s Eye (On Fashion) – Talkin’ New York

I step off the subway at 79th street. I take in the smell of fresh coffee and another New York morning. The streets are overrun with color , sounds and rhythmic patterns. New York is , undoubtedly, a fashion Mecca. I’ve seen enough style since I arrived to last me two lifetimes.I’ve seen fashion trends splashed across the sidewalks of New York like a Jackson Pollock painting – fresh and active. Who am I and what am I doing in New York City? I am a Lipscomb student doing an internship. In this column I’ll be sharing a glimpse into the fashion world. Today I’m in New York. I’m visually  digesting the “Big Apple”. The following are trends I notice. Spectacles Sometimes it’s fun to be a nerd. It can be a very rogue option – like you’re in disguise. Fakes or just real life necessity spectacles are coming back. Large lenses with statement frames are the best bet. Try rocking a pair and you will be looking like a born and bred New Yorker in no time. Long Skirts Skirts have grown significantly. It is now fashion rather then foe to have a skirt that grazes the ground. Fashion is taking a turn back to the ethereal Victorian era by pursuing a modest option. Pull out that boho skirt from five seasons ago. The circle of fashion has resurrected it. Go forth and be modest, just don’t trip over your fashion statement. Grungy Cutoffs Here’s where fashion takes a crafty turn. This next fashion statement has a bit of a D.I.Y (do it yourself) spirit . Take those...
