Women’s basketball looks to rebound from tough 2015 season

Women’s basketball looks to rebound from tough 2015 season

The Atlantic Sun preseason polls project a sixth place finish for the Lady Bisons basketball team this season. “I think experience is huge in basketball,” head coach Greg Brown said. “When we get to the point our seniors can teach the freshmen, I think it changes the culture of how we do things as a team.” Lipscomb had trouble rebounding last year, which lead to an unsuccessful scoring season. Brown expressed why he thinks this year will be different and how having five players over six-foot-tall will help in this area. “Not only will size help, but the mentality of the team will make a difference,” he said. “I believe we will see some return on investment there by focusing on this aspect with our team.” Senior Ashley Southern was named to the preseason Atlantic Sun All-Conference team alongside nine other NCAA players. “I think the biggest strength for this team will be each other,” Southern said. “The key I believe will be how to make each other better.” The Lady Bisons will open up their regular season Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m. against Loyola in Allen Arena. Men’s basketball projected fourth in preseason polls

Men’s basketball projected fourth in preseason polls

After a fifth place finish last season, the Atlantic Sun preseason polls have the Bisons ranked fourth for the upcoming basketball season. “I think it’s a fair placement,” head coach Casey Alexander said. “It shows that people think we have a chance to be good and have a solid team.” Junior Josh Williams was one of six selections for the preseason All-Atlantic Sun team. He averaged 16.9 points per game last season and 4.9 rebounds per game. “Preseason nominations and awards are a reflection of what happened the year before,” Alexander said. “Josh had a great year last year. He was an All-Conference player so quite naturally with him coming back he’s going to get that recognition.” North Flordia defeated the Bisons in the first conference tournament last season and went on to take first place in the Atlantic Sun tournament. Preseason polls have North Florida ranked first place going into the 2016 season. “Everyone knows preseason polls and nominations are fun and it’s great to gauge yourself to other teams, but all that matters is the results at the end of the season,” Alexander said. “We still have to play the games.” Photo courtesy of Lipscomb...

Lipscomb volleyball defeats Jacksonville 3-0 for senior night

Lipscomb’s volleyball team came away with a 3-0 victory over Jacksonville on senior night Friday in Allen Arena. For seniors Jewell Dobson, Brittnay Estes, and Molly Spitznagle, all tri-captains, it was their last regular season home game. “All three of these girls have played significant roles throughout their careers,” Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “It is more than the sheer number of kills, blocks and digs. The thing I reflect upon more importantly is the legacy they are leaving us with. They are a major part of not just being successful but they are a major part of taking this program to the next level.” The seniors combined for 30 of the team’s 50 kills during senior night’s game. “I look at all three and I have to use the word ‘awesome’ because I think it is the right word when you look at all three and their contributions,” Rosenthal said.  “When they arrived here we were around the top 100 in the country. Now we are in the top 50.” Coming into this season, Estes was selected for Atlantic Sun Preseason Player of the Year. “From day one you knew Brittnay was going to go out there and give you her absolute best,” Rosenthal said. “Brittnay has matured into an unbelievable leader. She has been the heartbeat of this team and the heartbeat of the program.” Dobson was selected for the preseason award last season, a year after winning the Atlantic Sun Player of the Year in 2013. Spitznagle was selected to the Atlantic Sun First Team All Conference last season. Estes and Dobson have been the best duo...

Lipscomb cross country team advances to Regionals

The Lipscomb women’s cross country team won their fifth conference title on Oct. 30 at the Atlantic Sun Championship tournament in Jacksonville, Flordia. The men’s team also won their third conference title at the tournament. “It was not our course; it was really different in Florida,” junior Juan Gonzalez said. “We knew this year would be a lot tougher and with harder competition. From the start we led the pack and just did what we do well.” The Bisons captured point titles with a total of 22 for the men’s races and 19 for the women’s. North Florida placed second and Florida Gulf Coast placed third in both events. Entering the championships, the women were ranked as the top seed in the A-Sun and third in the South Region. The men were ranked first in conference and seventh in the South Region. “Given our past success, we were very confident going into conference,” Gonzalez said. “At the same time, we knew we had targets on our backs as not a lot of people were happy that we kept winning – which made them more hungry and motivated to beat us.” The Lady Bisons were the first team in conference history to have all nine runners on All-Conference teams. They won by a margin of 54 points, a score that tied them for the most points accumulated. Senior Madi Talbert won the individual championship race for the second year in a row, only the seventh time a Lipscomb women’s cross country runner has accomplished this feat. Freshman Brooke Kingma became the third Lady Bison to win the Freshman of the Year award. She earned a First-Team All-Conference...

Lipscomb men’s soccer defeats Evansville 4-2

The Bisons took a win over Evansville to bring their record to 5-8-1 in a nonconference game Tuesday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. Sophomore Ivan Alvarado scored the first goal of the match in the fourth minute with an assist from redshirt junior Kevin McMahon. Evansville added two goals in the first half. Senior Nate Opperman scored the first goal for the Purple Aces in the 12th minute. Evansville sophomore Desmond Dolphy scored the second goal in the 18th minute. Lipscomb rallied against Evansville by scoring three goals in the second half. “The focus in the second half was to keep attacking the flanks,”  Lipscomb men’s soccer head coach Charles Morrow said. “We were able to spread them a little bit, which led to the goals being scored.” Redshirt freshman Logan Paynter started the comeback for Lipscomb with his fifth goal of the season in the 48th minute. Sophomore Joe Kerridge and senior Anthony Cedano picked up assists on the score. “Logan has done a great job for us this year,” Morrow said. “He really came out strong for us in the spring. We had a feeling this was going to be a good year and he and some other people have stepped up well this year.” Junior Daniel Vieira scored the Bisons’ next goal in the 68th minute with an assist from Alvarado. The last goal of the game came from junior Brandon Braumuller in the 84th minute. This goal was the first of the season for Braumuller. “It is a very good goal for Brandon,” Morrow said. “Brandon has been close several times this season, so it is good for him to finally get on the...

Lipscomb volleyball takes down Belmont rival 3-2

Lipscomb volleyball defeated Belmont 3-2 Tuesday night in Allen Arena during volleyball’s Battle of the Boulevard. Belmont took Lipscomb through a five-set match for the second time this season. Tuesday’s victory gave the Bison volleyball team a 13-12 all-time series advantage over Belmont. “It’s a great feeling knowing that we are going to go down in history as the first team to lead the all-time series record over Belmont,” senior outside hitter Brittnay Estes said. Estes has been a leader for the Bisons throughout the season. She has led the team in kills for almost every match and led the team Tuesday with 19 kills. “My goal was to just to be an energizer and a team leader,” Estes said. “I knew that was going to be the way I could help our team win.” Although the Bisons emerged victorious, the Bruins fought back and kept the out-of-conference rivalry alive. “This has been a great rivalry for our program,” head coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “I’m glad that we are able to keep the rivalry alive even while being in different conferences.” Lipscomb begins the second half of its conference schedule by playing NJIT Saturday, Oct. 24 at 12 p.m in Allen Arena.
