The Lady Bisons are now 5-1 in conference matches after a victory against the Stetson Hatters on Sunday afternoon at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. Lipscomb started off with both offense and defense dominating the first half with two goals. Sophomore Jade Abarca scored the Lady Bisons first goal of the match with a penalty kick in the first few minutes of the first half. Freshman Brooke Brenner followed the first goal with an unassisted goal to finish the first half of the play. The Lady Bisons continued their momentum into the second half with freshman Maycie McKay kicking her eighth goal of the season, assisted by Shuler. “The girls performed very well today, it is a step into the right direction and we need to be able to play like this for the rest of the conference,” Head coach Kevin O’Brien said. “We were aggressive and did not allow Stetson any room to breathe.” The Lady Bisons will travel to New Jersey to play NJIT in their seventh A-Sun match Saturday, Oct. 24 at 12 p.m.. In an overtime thriller between the top two teams in Atlantic Sun standings, Florida Gulf Coast University defeated Lipscomb women’s soccer 2-1 Friday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. This match determined which team would be in sole position of first place in the A-Sun and would be in a position to host the next A- Sun tournament. Junior goalkeeper Anna Buhigas recently earned her third career A-Sun Defensive Player of the Week after shutting out both Jacksonville and North Florida. FGCU junior mid-fielder Yazmin Velez beat Buhigas with her left foot in the 43rd minute off an assist from FGCU junior Ali Rogers to open the scoring. It looked as if one goal would be all that FGCU would need until Lipscomb scored a shot by senior defender Alex Hickey, who had just entered the match as a sub, in the 79th minute. The score remained 1-1 when the match went into overtime. Buhigas, 2014 A-Sun Goalkeeper of the Year, found her matchup against FGCU junior forward Tabby Tindell, 2014 A-Sun Player of the year. This matchup is the one that ended the game. Exactly seven minutes into the first overtime period, Tindell connected on a pass that sent a rocket into the upper-left corner of the net for the game winning goal. “She made a great run, and was in the right place at the right time,” redshirt sophomore defender Niamh Rawlins said. The Lipscomb volleyball team extended their winning streak to 6-0 in Atlantic Sun Conference play after a 3-0 win over USC Upstate Friday night at Allen Arena. The Lady Bisons started off strong, taking the first set 25-20 in a close and tense encounter against the resilient USC Spartans. The second set was an even closer battle with momentum swings from both teams. The Lady Bisons displayed grit and came back to win 27-25. The Lady Bisons continued to be aggressive on both offense and defense, winning the third set 25-14. “We played ok — there was a lot we could have done better — we are now moving on and looking ahead onto our next match against Kennesaw,” sophomore Jenny Phelan said. Several came to not only witness the match but also support the recent tragedy that occurred at USC Upstate, with the death of four student athletes last weekend. At the end of the game Lipscomb University presented Upstate with a plaque filled with support from the whole Lipscomb community. “It is hard to play against them after the tragic news, but we knew that they were here to play and try not to think about it when we played,” Phelan said. “We just did what we needed to do.” The Lady Bisons will return to Allen Arena on Sunday at 2 p.m. to play against Kennesaw State to close out the first half of the A-Sun season. The Lipscomb (4-6-1, 2-1 A-Sun) men’s soccer team held a 3-2 win over Jacksonville (2-8-1, 0-3 A-Sun) in an Atlantic Sun conference game Tuesday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. “We scored early which was good,” head coach Charles Morrow said. “I felt like we took our foot off the gas, but all credit goes to our guys for coming back in the second half.” This victory puts the Bisons’ conference record at 2-1. “Every game is huge, especially when you have three conference games in an eight day period,” Morrow said. “It is super important to get out of this tough stretch, winning two out of the three games.” The Bisons scored the first goal of the match in the 3rd minute by junior Kevin McMahon. The goal was unassisted. The Dolphins answered with two goals in the first half. The first goal occurred in the 25th minute and the second occurred in the 43rd minute. The Lipscomb volleyball team defeated the Flordia Gulf Coast Eagles 3-0 Sunday afternoon in Allen Arena. The Bisons won set one 25-14, set two 25-19 and the final set 25-15. “This is exactly what we planned to do to start out the season,” head coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “I love the fact that our girls are really dialed in right now.” Defeating the Eagles brought the Bisons’ Atlantic Sun conference record to an undefeated 3-0 record. Lipscomb started off each match with a strong lead and Rosenthal said that was the key to success for the game. Outside hitter sophomore Chloe Rogers and right side senior Brittnay Estes tied for the most kills during the game with 13 each. “We apply a lot of pressure,” Rosenthal said. “When you do that, you make opponents start to feel uncomfortable. We want to control our destiny.” Lipscomb will take on North Florida at their home court in Jacksonville at 6 p.m. Friday. “North Florida has always played tough the last few years,” Rosenthal said. “I expect a gutsy, grinding match like they have always given us.” Photo courtesy of Lipscomb...

The Lipscomb men’s soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss to North Florida in Atlantic Sun Conference play on Saturday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. More than 100 spectators came to watch the much anticipated match between the Bisons and the North Florida Ospreys. Both teams struggled to find rhythm in an intense first half with neither being able to score on the rain-soaked field. North Florida broke the silence in the second half with a goal from No. 5 sophomore Joshua Castellanos assisted by No. 9 senior Alex Morell. No. 2 sophomore Aiden D’Mello kicked the finishing goal, assisted by Morell. “I don’t think the score is indicative of how close the game actually was; we let it get away from us there at the end,” head coach Charles Morrow said, according to Lipscomb Athletics. “I don’t think we did a good job of preparing for them from a coaching perspective and I don’t think our guys played very well. It was just a bad combination. North Florida is definitely a team that I would welcome to play again in the tournament.” Up next the Bisons will play Jacksonville at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home.
