Freshman guard Nathan Moran scored 17 points in the Bison’s 72-60 loss to Missouri this Saturday in Allen Arena. Sophomore guard Josh Williams added 11 points and seven rebounds. Lipscomb led 35-33 at halftime. The Bisons were unable to hit a basket in the final 9:33 of the game. Missouri’s Johnat Williams III scored 16, while Keith Shamburger added 15. Missouri’s record improved to 6-7 overall. This loss was the first the men’s basketball team in 2015. Lipscomb’s record fell to 5-9 overall. Happy New Year, Lumination readers! Now that the new year’s resolutions have been made and the first day of 2015 is here, we want to take a hop back in time to look at some of Lipscomb’s biggest moments of 2014. Before we get to the top 10 stories, we want to take a moment to honor those we lost in 2014. Alumni Andrew Nash, Anastasia Sloan, Meghan Day and Jacob Akers, and associate professor of pharmacy practice Kim Barker and longtime faculty member Earl Dennis all passed away. As we begin a new year, we would like to keep those listed and their families in our thoughts and prayers. Quite a few stories made it close to the top 10. They include a few annual events, special guests and people in new positions of leadership. In December, Amy Grant hosted the tenth annual Lighting of the Green in Allen Arena. This year, a scholarship was created in Grant’s honor. During the spring, the fifth annual Charlie Daniels’ Scholarship for Heroes concert brought country music stars and fundraising to Allen Arena once again. Also in 2014, the Dove Awards returned to Lipscomb for its 46th ceremony. In November, the Lipscomb community came together at one of Nashville’s premier venues: The Ryman. Nashville’s Charles Esten joined the program “Lipscomb: On a New Stage,” and even performed a few tunes, too. Also in 2014, Lipscomb welcomed Darrin Bellows as the new director of security and safety and Josh Roberts as the new dean of student development. The Christmas break gave the Lady Bison basketball team a chance to get some rest, but the team still came up short in the Georgia Tech Holiday Tournament. The Lady Bisons travelled down to Atlanta where they first played the host, Georgia Tech on Dec. 29. After the first half of the game, the Lady Bisons were only down by 11 points; however, in the second half Georgia Tech scored 32 points to come away with the 71-53 win. Ashley Southern had her 26th career double-double and fourth of the year. The Lady Bisons were perfect from the free throw line, but only shot one free throw the entire game. Georgia Tech was 42.9 percent from the field while Lipscomb was just 36.2 percent. Just a day after the loss to Georgia Tech, the Lady Bisons had to refocus and prepare to play Harvard on Dec. 30. The game against Harvard was different than the game against the Yellow Jackets. The Lady Bisons did not come out as strong in the first half. The team allowed Harvard to get ahead 41-22 in the first half before finally losing 84-63. The Lady Bisons were neck-in-neck with Harvard in terms of scoring in the second half. Lipscomb scored 41 points to Harvard’s 43. Despite the loss, the Lady Bisons had four players score in double figures. Chandler Cooper and Ashley Southern each had 14 points, Sara Bliss had 11 points and Danay Fothergill had 10. The Bison baseball team returned home from the Dominican Republic with a stronger sense of appreciation for what they have and formed bonds with one another that they believe will carry on into the season. The team served together on their first all-team mission trip where they renovated a local sandlot field. The guys built dugouts, put up a backstop, leveled the playing surface and spruced up the field. They worked from Dec. 12 to Dec. 19 alongside a pastor named Michel. When the team wasn’t hard at work they had some free time to kill. “When we weren’t working, we spent a lot of time playing with the kids in the local community,” senior Josh Lee said. Senior J Hwang talked about the impact simply spending time with the kids had on him. “The biggest impact for me was the relationship that I got to build with the community and the teammates that I went with,” Hwang said. “I spent a lot of time with the kids, just hanging out hours after hours even though I couldn’t speak Spanish.” Lee said he was most impacted by the lifestyle the people of the community lived, and the joy he saw in their lives. “The biggest impact the trip had on me was how happy and appreciative the people in the community were, especially the kids,” Lee said. “They have very little, but you wouldn’t know that because they never stopped smiling while we were there.” Not only did the trip impact the individual players on the team, but it also helped the team form strong bonds with one another....

Twenty members of the Lipscomb Track and Field team brought Christmas to the children of the Dominican Republic during their mission trip last week. The team worked with Manna Global Ministries, an organization that provides a children’s home, housing 13 orphan children in two buildings, a Christian high school, and a soon-to-be college program in Santiago. During the trip, the team had the opportunity to share gifts, play games and celebrate Christmas with children throughout the communities. For many of them, these were the only gifts they would receive all year. Through the outreach, the team set out to build lasting relationships. “After watching a pre-trip documentary, our team really wanted to do more than complete quantifiable tasks,” said sophomore Katie Bianchini. “We went to build lasting relationships that we could continue back in the states.” By learning more about the culture of the Dominican Republic, the team was able to grow closer to the people there. The team spilt into three groups to visit houses in the community, and each group got a little taste of the lifestyle during a meal prepared by the native people. While one group learned how to make rugs out of T-shirt cloth, another got to hold baby chicks and wash dishes after lunch. The team also helped the organization by painting an outreach center in Rio San Juan and spreading gravel to make a new entrance for the building. The Bisons defeated Austin Peay 69-63 during the last game before their winter break Sunday night in Allen Arena. Sophomore guard Josh Williams led the way for the Bisons, scoring 21 points. Three other players put up double digits, including sophomore forward Brett Wishon with 14, senior forward Malcolm Smith with 11 and freshman guard Nathan Moran with 10. Austin Peay’s Chris Freeman scored 15, and Chris Horton scored 13 points. Austin Peay dropped to 4-8.
