The Lady Bisons improve to 4-6 on the season with their 72-53 win over Tennessee Tech. Ashley Southern led the team with 19 points and 11 rebounds marking her 25th career double double. Chandler Cooper had 12 points and senior Sara Bliss did as well, while Danay Fothergill finished with 10 points. Cooper was also 4-9 from the three point line. The Lady Bisons shot just over 40% from the field and 78.3% from the free throw line. The Golden Eagles trailed the entire game. Lipscomb led 26-21 at the half before scoring 46 points in the second half to secure the win. Saturday the Lady Bisons take on Xavier as they travel up to Cincinnati. The Lady Bisons defeated Jackson State 72-45 last night in Allen Arena. Senior guard Sara Bliss led the way for Lipscomb, scoring 17 points. Freshman guard Amber Fuqua added a career-best — eight points and four rebounds. Freshman forward Riley Northway grabbed a career-high with five rebounds. Freshman guard Emily Eubank added a career-high with four steals. The victory broke a three-game losing streak for the Lady Bisons at home. Jackson State’s 45 points was the second-lowest point total this season. Lipscomb shot 44.6% from the field. Jackson State was held to 22.2% from field goals. During the first game of a long road trip, the Bisons fell 106-61 in Austin, Tex. to the no. 9 Texas Longhorns. The Bisons never had the lead throughout the game, but did keep in close in the early minutes of the first half until the Longhorns started to run away with it. Senior Malcolm Smith was the leading scorer for the Bisons with 17 points while Myles Turner had 26 points for Texas. When it came to free throws, Lipscomb shot 60.9% from the line; however, the Longhorns had 14 more free throw attempts and shot 64.9%. At halftime, the Longhorns led 58-32, and the Bisons struggled with having their shots fall. The team was 19-62 from the field. Texas not only out-shot the Bisons, but also out-rebounded them. the Longhorns had 55 rebounds to Lipscomb’s 28. The Lady Bisons lost 85-51 in a matchup with the Tennessee Lady Vols Sunday afternoon in Allen Arena. The Lady Vols came into the game ranked 14th in the nation after ending a two-game losing streak, a rarity for the perennial national championship contenders. Lipscomb hung close with Tennessee for the first ten minutes of game action. A three from senior Sara Bliss gave the Lady Bisons a 3-2 lead, their first and only, at the 17:21 mark. The deficit remained in the single digits until halfway through the first quarter thanks to feisty, spirited defense from Lipscomb and a number of missed shots for both teams. “I knew we were capable of it. You don’t know what to expect when playing a team of that caliber,” Lipscomb head coach Greg Brown said, “We knew if we could try to limit possessions and play physical and play good positioning, we’d be in a good position.” Once the Lady Vols found their groove late in the first half, the Lady Bisons struggled to hang with the size and strength of Tennessee The Lady Bisons came out strong in the second half, even outscoring Tennessee for the first ten minutes of the second. “We thought we played with a lot of energy in the first half. We just had to continue to be aggressive, and do the things we practiced. I thought they did a very good job of that,” Brown said. It took a little time, but the Lipscomb Bisons now have a Division 1 win in the W column. The team (3-5) defeated the Tennessee State Tigers (2-7) 77-68 Saturday at Allen Arena in an afternoon tipoff. Senior forward Malcolm Smith (22 points) led the Bisons’ attack inside the paint, where the team amassed 44 of its 77 points. In the first half, the Bisons and Tigers looked evenly matched. Both teams struggled early to generate any sort of offensive pressure. But, Smith helped spark Lipscomb with five straight to give the home team a 9-4 lead with 12:20 to half. The Tigers began to spark their own game from the perimeter soon after to get back in the game. After a quick lead switch-off in the low 20s, the Bisons took back momentum and led at half, 36-31. To start the second, the Tigers came out hot on a 7-0 run to get the 37-36 lead at 18:01, but a 3 from freshman guard Aaron Korn settled the Bisons down. After TSU led by 8, the Bisons got back into the game and inched their way to a strong lead late in the game. Lipscomb never let TSU back in and picked up their third win of the season. Smith led all scorers with 22 and all rebounders with 8, while TSU’s junior guard Marcus Roper was not too far behind in points with 21. The Lady Bisons lost 3-0 to Ohio State in the NCAA Tournament to bring their season to a close. Friday night started out with an exciting up-beat atmosphere as the Lady Bisons took to Memorial Coliseum on Kentucky’s campus. Many Bison fans and parents made the trip to Lexington to support the team, and Lipscomb fans outnumbered Ohio State fans in attendance. Despite the amount of support for the Bisons, Ohio State took all three sets. The first set was a fight as the team came out strong only to fall 25-20. The Buckeyes dominated the second set winning 25-14, and completed the win with a 25-18 victory in the final set of the night. During the match, Ohio State won every aspect of play except number of attacks. The Lady Bisons had 109 attacks to the Buckeys’ 95; however, Ohio State finished with a .274 hitting percentage to Lipscomb’s .037. Senior Lauren Ford led the team with 10 kills, and sophomore Kayla Ostrom led with 28 assists. With the loss the Lady Bisons finish their season at 21-9 and the highest RPI ranking in program history, no. 33. The Lady Bisons lose four seniors to graduation in the spring, Lauren Ford, Sophie Kellerman, Megan Stout and Jordan Huston. Jewell Dobson will return for her redshirt season in the fall.
