The Nashville Predators lead the Central Division, and Lipscomb students are getting a chance to see the action at a discounted price. The Predators bring several new faces to the ice including Peter Laviolette, the new head coach. The changes provide a whole new style of play to the organization. Nashville was the only team left standing without a loss in regulation when they finally lost to Pittsburgh eight games into the season. First year Predator James Neal tallied the first hat trick on home ice for Nashville since New Year’s Day in 2012 against the Chicago Blackhawks on Oct. 23. Lipscomb and the Predators organization have teamed up to let students in on the action on a college budget. Every Thursday night in Smashville is Student Rush Night. Lipscomb students and even faculty can purchase tickets for $15 in the upper bowl and $35 in the lower bowl. “My friends and I get tired of doing the same ole go out to dinner and see a movie thing,” sophomore Sarah Warren said. “The discounted Predators tickets make it affordable for us to do something different while getting to enjoy hockey and the awesome atmosphere in Smashville.” The games included on the discount include: • Thursday, Nov. 27 vs. Edmonton Oilers • Thursday, Dec. 4 vs. division rivals St. Louis Blues • Thursday, Jan. 8 vs. division rivals Dallas Stars • Thursday, Feb. 5 vs. Anaheim Ducks • Thursday, Feb. 12 vs. division rivals Winnipeg Jets • Thursday, Feb. 26 vs. division rivals Minnesota Wild • Thursday, March 5 vs. New York Islanders • Thursday, April 8 vs. division...

Halloween was a day for tricks and treats, but in Allen Arena, it was also a day for an important volleyball matchup. The Lady Bisons pulled off a 3-0 victory against conference foe, Stetson in fairly quick fashion. Libero Bri McCombs led the Lady Bisons with a match-high 16 digs. Jordan Huston also posted a match-high 34 assists while adding a service ace and three kills, and Brittnay Estes had a match high .538 hitting percentage. The Student Athletic Advisory Committee organized some fun for the fans also Halloween night. Several athletic teams dressed up in costume while they supported the Lady Bisons. The track and cross country team dressed as the 101 Dalmations. The softball team dressed as phone apps, and women’s basketball dressed as Noah’s ark. Several other athletes dressed up as well. In between the third and fourth sets of the game the athletes handed out candy to any children who were at the game, and they were also dressed in costume. On Saturday the Lady Bisons stepped into the number one spot in the conference after defeating Florida Gulf Coast 3-1. Both squads now have one loss within the conference. The Power Rangers rarely, if ever, have been defeated by their opposition, and Friday night was no different…kind of. In the annual Lipscomb dodgeball tournament (this year’s theme being the pirate-influenced “Jolly Dodger”), Team “Power Rangers” defeated “Lipscomb Volleyball” in an epic championship held in the Fanning Hall courtyard Friday night. Senior Ben Ashley explained what was going through his head during the final one-on-one showdown. “Honestly, I was just thinking, ‘This is the end, this is it. But after it’s all over, I’m still going to have a blast because we’re all friends’,” Ashley said. Part of the show included the teams’ theme and costumes. Sophomore Cedric Duncan explains how they came up with the idea for Power Rangers. “We had several ideas at first,” Duncan said. “Husband Housewives was the original one, but decided to go with the Power Rangers.” Created with Admarket’s flickrSLiDR. En route to their championship, they beat the defending champions, “Team Belmont.” “Everybody wanted us to beat them, so it felt great to come out on top,” Duncan added. However, the fun didn’t stop there. Since it was Halloween, students had the chance to win $100 for the best costume. Via crowd vote, the winner was a student dressed as Batman. Hello, fellow NFL fans! Cory Woodroof here. The NFL season is half-way over, and we’ve got some awards to give out. The players and teams below are the ones I designate the “Midseason fill-in-the-blank” winner so far this year. These players or teams may not hang on for the rest of the year, but I’d bet in their favor. MVP: DEMARCO MURRAY – RB, COWBOYS To me, the best player in the NFL comes down to three players: DeMarco Murray, Peyton Manning and J.J. Watt. Manning is playing at an incredibly high level on the best team in the NFL, and Watt is wrecking opposing offenses on a regular basis. But, can we really say anyone is having a more impactful year than Murray? The running back has rushed for over 100 yards in eight consecutive games and has seven touchdowns on the season. Murray is also reportedly on pace to top former Rams great Eric Dickerson’s all-time season rushing yard record of 2, 105. The Cowboys are the surprise team of the NFL this year, and Murray’s big year is one of the huge sparks that has gotten them there. If Murray keeps up this pace and breaks Dickerson’s record, he’s the MVP. No questions asked. OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: PEYTON MANNING – QB, BRONCOS After winning MVP last year, the Sherriff has not slowed down. Manning has thrown for 22 touchdowns and has a 90.1 QBR so far this season. On Oct. 25, over 20,000 people participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Brentwood. The event had a 5k for the competitive runners, but also a walk for all the people that wanted to participate. The breast cancer run is not your typical running event. Participants included men, women, babies and even their dogs dressed up in tutus, bedazzled bras and wigs, all of which were pink. One of the runners that joined in on this event is Alanna Walser, a senior at Lipscomb. She shared what this race means to her. “My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was a sophomore in high school, ever since then I have been coming to the race for a cure. Just recently, my grandmother has also been diagnosed with breast cancer,” Walser said. “So we come out here to celebrate her and the determination and fight that she and my mother have shown throughout this journey.” At the race, women that have overcome the disease were honored during the parade of survivors. These survivors range from those being cancer free for one year to long-time survivors. The longest survivor from the group that has beaten cancer is now 37 years cancer free. This event is for the families that have gone through this journey, for the women to celebrate new life and to also bring hope for the future.
