Lady Bison basketball released the competitive 2014-2015 schedule on Aug. 20. The highlight of the schedule for fans will be the game on Dec. 7 against the Tennessee Lady Vols at Allen Arena. “Hosting Tennessee at home is exciting,” red-shirt junior Danay Fothergill said. “We want to look at it as just another game. We want to use our advantages to be competitive and just have fun.” The regular season tips off Nov. 14 with Georgia Southern and Nov. 16 against Wright State. Both non-conference games will be played in Allen Arena. The highly anticipated Battle of the Boulevard matchup will be played Dec. 2 at Belmont. Before ending the non-conference schedule, the Lady Bisons will travel to Ohio to face Xavier on Dec. 20. After the Christmas holidays, Lipscomb takes on Georgia Tech in Atlanta Dec. 29. On Jan. 5 in Allen Arena, Trevecca will be the last team the Lady Bisons play before Atlantic Sun Conference play begins. The last 14 games on the regular season are A-Sun matchups. “We just want to make sure we end non-conference play after Christmas with energy going into conference,” Fothergill said. Jan. 10 starts conference play against Northern Kentucky in Allen Arena. The Lady Bisons are ready to show they belong in the stacked A-Sun conference. The first real A-Sun test may come on Jan. 29 against Florida Gulf Coast in Allen Arena. “Florida Gulf Coast brings a lot to the conference and are always a tough matchup,” Fothergill said. “We have something to prove and are ready to show what we have been working on.” The last three out...

With temperatures threatening triple-digits and thunderstorms in the forecast, Lipscomb students still came out to participate in the annual kickball tournament on Saturday. SAC intramural graduate assistant Kyle Erickson was very pleased with the attendance despite the extreme conditions. “It’s been a great day so far, we’ve had a pretty good turnout. It’s been hot, but it’s been a lot of fun,” Erickson said. The first pitch was delayed after the tournament had to be moved from the intramural fields to Draper Diamond due to the field conditions. Eight teams competed in the single-elimination format with one winner being declared in the end. The tournament featured a dunk tank (which was very beneficial considering the heat), hot dogs and hamburgers, and many laughs to go along. Freshman Danny Marsh enjoyed his first kickball experience, and was very optimistic about his team’s chances. “We’re going in with high hopes, coming back with this championship team from last year. We have huge expectations, and we’re looking for good results,” Marsh said. Participants did admit that the humidity did have some effect on them, and it was crucial to stay hydrated. “I definitely think it’s going to take a bit of a toll on us, but I think these boys are ready to push through,” Marsh said. The Battle of the Boulevard is routinely one of the biggest games of the year for all Lipscomb and Belmont sports teams. The heated rivalry often leads to physical, heated matches, and this incarnation was no different. In front of the home crowd, the Bisons earned a hard-fought victory in their first game of the season against the rival Bruins 3-2. Senior and captain Luke Gearin, recently voted the pre-season A-Sun Defensive player of the Year, put away the game-winning goal off of a penalty kick in the second half of overtime. Fellow senior and A-Sun pre-season Player of the Year Omar Djabi drew the foul that earned the penalty kick with three minutes to go in the second overtime period. The high-scoring affair began with a goal from junior forward Zach Tarbox fifteen minutes into the game, followed by a Belmont equalizer from sophomore forward AJ Arnold late in the first half. Belmont sophomore keeper Grayson Rector and Lipscomb sophomore keeper Micah Bledsoe made back-to-back key saves for their respective squads early in the second half. Ten minutes into the second half Lipscomb junior midfielder Josue Chavez rocketed a shot in from outside the box to give the Bisons a 2-1 lead. The 2014-15 men’s basketball schedule has been released, and several high profile matchups dot the early portion of the season. The Bisons kick off the season at home on November 14 with a game against Berry College, followed by the home slate of Battle of the Boulevard on November 17. The team will travel down the road to Vanberbilt on November 20 and finish up the Battle of the Boulevard 2014 series at Belmont on November 24. Lipscomb’s first game outside of Nashville will be on November 30 against Colorado of the newly-minted Pac-12. After three straight games in Tennessee at Tennessee Tech, at home against Tennessee State University and on the road with Austin Peay on Decemeber 3, 6, and 13 respectively, the Bisons will travel to Austin for a matchup with Big-12 powerhouse Texas on December 16. SEC newcomer Missouri will receive a taste of the Lipscomb game on January 3 in Columbia in the last road game before A-Sun Conference play kicks off on January 10 at home against Northern Kentucky. Key conference tilts include two games against recent March Madness darlings Florida Gulf Coast, one on the road (January 31) and one at home (February 14), as well as a home (January 13) and away (February 25) slate with USC Upstate. Filming for the upcoming movie “My Many Sons” will be taking place on Lipscomb’s campus until August 16. The film will detail the life of the late, legendary Lipscomb basketball coach Don Meyer. Production of the movie will continue in various locations across Nashville over the coming weeks, as well as Aberdeen, South Dakota, the location of Northern State, where Meyer coached for over a decade. Former Lipscomb student-athlete Casey Bond is heading the project. Bond, whose Bison baseball career led to a stint in the Minor Leagues, starred in the Oscar-nominated film Moneyball in 2011. “My Many Sons” depicts the relationships that Meyer forged with his players throughout his career and the impact he had on generations of young people. This story is not about wins or records, but rather about Coach’s relationships with players and their families,” Casey Bond told Lipscomb University, “It’s about how one man took the time to build character in young people, which is something we desperately need in our world today. Coach Meyer made the most of a very difficult situation in his life and ran with it.” Bond will be joined in his producer role by longtime Hollywood producer Brad Wilson. The two will be producing the film under their production company Higher Purpose Entertainment. Bond will also be playing the role of Don Meyer’s son Jerry in the film. He will be joined in the cast by former Oscar winner Tatum O’Neal as Carmen Meyer. Veteran Hollywood actor Judge Reinhold will be taking on the lead role of Don Meyer. With July, and the summer as a whole, almost in the books, The Postgame is here to gather all of the Lipscomb sports news from the past month. Lipscomb Track and Field: To cap off his freshman season, Phillip Smith competed at the USA Junior Track and Field National Championships on July 6 in Eugene, Oregon. Smith finished seventh overall in the triple jump competition. The recently graduated Tessa Hoefle added another honor to her achievements list after being named to the Capital One Academic All-American First Team. Hoefle owned a 4.0 GPA and won three A-Sun Scholar Athlete of the Year awards. As an overall squad, the Women’s Track and Field team ranks second overall in the nation for GPA. The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced that the team’s 3.61 GPA was good enough for second overall in the country. Lipscomb Softball: Rising junior Tanner Sanders pitched for the Central Virginia All-Stars. The team faced off against Team USA hopefuls in a pair of exhibition games in Lynchburg, Virginia. Sanders gave up five hits in six innings work during the two games. Kasey Gibson, a rising sophomore, got her own chance to play against elite competition. Gibson suited up for the Indiana Slammers, a team made up of college softball players from the Indiana area. The Slammers were able to play against the Netherlands National Women’s Softball Team in July, losing 6-5. Lipscomb Golf: Incoming freshman, and former Lipscomb Academy student-athlete, Dawson Armstrong qualified for the 2014 USGA Amateur Championship.
