Bisons baseball swings for the sweep over ETSU

The Lipscomb Bisons completed a three game sweep of the East Tennessee State Buccaneers over the weekend. In game one the Bisons’ bats came alive pounding out sixteen hits. “When the hits start to spread from hitter to hitter, one guy feeds off the other. Good things happen,” head coach Jeff Forehand said. The offensive attack for the Bisons was lead by a 5-for-5 night at the plate by junior left fielder Josh Lee and a 3-for-4 game by junior center fielder Jonathan Allison. Allison hit a home run over the left field wall to give the Bisons an early 1-0 and later recorded a base-clearing triple that brought home two more runs. Allison finished the game with three RBI’s. ETSU did not go down easy. They responded to the 5-0 lead by adding two runs of their own to trim the margin to three. In the 7th inning ETSU closed the gap even more by adding five more runs, but the Bisons were able to hang on for the 9-7 win. In game two of the series, ETSU ran into a pitcher on a mission. Hunter Brothers pitched his first career complete game shut out. “When you get that performance that is all you need. He dominated from start to finish,” Forehand said. Junior shortstop Grant Massey lead the way offensively with a 4-for-4 day. He got the game started with a first inning triple to left and later scored on a RBI single. “Grant is one of the key components to this team. He is leading us on offense and defense but also with the spirit he brings...

Men’s soccer splits games with UK and UAB

Men’s soccer split two games Saturday after playing the University of Kentucky and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. In the earlier match against Kentucky, the Bisons fell short, but in the game against UAB the Bisons came away with a 4-2 victory. Sophomore fielder,Reece Holcombe, talked about the different style of play Kentucky used. “Kentucky likes to pass the ball more, they have European players so they like to pass the ball around,” Holcombe said. After a tough loss to the SEC team, the Bisons kept up their energy to get the win over UAB. “UAB is a more physical team, they are a historically bigger team and they like to be more direct,” Holcombe said, “It’s a school first, beating UAB. I think it’s a nice step in the direction that we are going. We’re getting better every year.” Sophomore midfielder, Josue Chavez, says the way they played against UAB made a difference in the outcome. “Both games were decent, Kentucky was harder to score against, but UAB, we were passing the ball better and giving ourselves more chances to score,” Chavez said. Even though the Bisons battled UAB later on in the day, Chavez spoke about how the overall energy of their game was elevated. “Our energy overall against UAB was better than Kentucky, when we were down we used our energy to pick us back up and come back and get the four goals,” Chavez said. The Bisons have been putting work in during the off-season, and it is paying off. “This spring has been tough but it really shows how much better we are getting,”...

Track and field finds success at Vanderbilt invitational

Neither rain, wind nor cold weather can keep the Bisons from competing and succeeding. The Lipscomb Track & Field team competed in the two day Vanderbilt meet this past weekend. Vanderbilt, The Ohio State, Belmont, Austin Peay and Alabama A&M all took part in the meet. “This was the best meet we’ve had at Vanderbilt since I’ve been at Lipscomb,” Coach Bill Taylor said. “Traditionally, for some reason, we’ve struggled for the most part at this meet.” Setting the stage on Friday was Dani Walker winning the Invitational 1500 meters and setting a new school record with a record time of 4:21.34. Right behind her was Madi Talbert, who moved to No. 3 on Lipscomb’s all-time list. Ki’Ana Christy has really been excelling during this outdoor season. She has broken her jumping record for the second week in a row by jumping 11.36 meters. Setting her own personal record was Jazmyne McGill. She threw 38.09 meters in the hammer and in shot recorded 11.38 meters. Del McSpadden also found success in the hammer throw with a throw of 39.08 meters. Tucker Peabody found himself on the podium winning second place in the 200 meters with a 21.03 time. Peabody also came in second in the 100 meters crossing the finish line with a time of 10.55 “It’s very challenging to do the events in bad weather,” junior April Terry said. “In the rain it’s so easy to fall and slip. During your events, you have to have confidence, and you must trust yourself.” Confidence and trust are something the team proved they all possess throughout this meet. D.A. Lowery...

Lady Bisons softball team wins one in doubleheader against UAB

In what was the second meeting between the teams this season, the Lipscomb softball team split in their doubleheader with UAB on Wednesday at Draper Diamond. In the first game, the Purple and Gold used its defense to propel them to a 2-1 victory. Sophomore Brittany Elmore drove in the two runs on a walk-off double in the first game. However, in the second game, they struggled to keep the Blazers off the base, resulting in a 5-3 loss. “Getting the win the first game was huge for us,” Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. “Obviously, we wanted the sweep…we thought we had a chance to win it, but UAB did a really great job of coming back with two runs late.” The Lady Bisons came into the contest ranked 35th in the nation and with a record of 28-8, so, on paper, they are the better team, but UAB, a member of the Conference USA, has had the upper-hand in the series since the “rivalry” began in 2010. The Lady Bisons defeated the Blazers 9-5 in February during the Getterman Classic in Waco, Texas. To Lipscomb’s credit, they earned the Atlantic Sun’s 24th win against a 2013 NCAA Tournament team with the win. Coming off weekend losses to conference rival USC Upstate, the Lady Bisons wanted to regain some of their confidence against UAB. “I thought we played well, and we attacked the ball better than we did last weekend,” Ryman said. “That was good to see.” Coach Ryman gave a lot of credit to the team’s pitching for its win in the first game and added if they had kept...

Kayla Montgomery battles MS to excel in track and cross country

For someone who has not even graduated high school yet, future Bison cross country and track and field athlete Kayla Montgomery has already gained more national media attention than many professional athletes will in over the span of an entire career. Montgomery is a senior at Mount Tabor High School in Winston-Salem, N.C who is currently competing in the high school national track championships in New York City alongside hundreds of the best high school track and field athletes from across the country. So what exactly sets her apart from her peers? Montgomery was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis three years ago. Multiple sclerosis, or MS, is a disease that disrupts the way the nervous system communicates with the rest of your body, resulting in numerous symptoms including loss of muscle control and numbness of certain body parts. Montgomery has had a successful running career in high school, despite MS causing her legs to go numb during all of her races to the point that she cannot stand on her own once she crosses the finish line. With her success came interest from colleges across the country, including Lipscomb. However, when other schools were hesitant to offer Montgomery a scholarship because of her disease, Lipscomb was more than willing to add her to the Bison team. “Some of it is that we recruit on character and we recruit on academics. We recruit on a lot of different things; it’s not just athletics” said Bill Taylor, Director of Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Track and Field at Lipscomb. “She’s a fast runner, but we’re looking for a certain fit for...
