It was a tale of two halves for the Lipscomb women’s basketball team Saturday at Allen Arena. After connecting on six 3-pointers in the first half, the Lady Bisons could not buy one in the second half, which resulted in a 91-71 loss to USC Upstate. The Purple and Gold kept pace with the Spartans for the majority of the first half, but a late 15-2 run for Upstate carried them to the finish. “I thought we played well the first 14 minutes,” head coach Greg Brown said. “But throughout the rest of the game, we did not match their physicalness or their intensity. With our size and depth, we can’t afford that.” It was evident that their lack of size became a problem as Upstate more than doubled their offensive rebounds and hauled in 20 more altogether. Redshirt sophomore guard, Danay Fothergill led all scorers with 21 points; however, it was not enough to slow down the Spartans. “We kind of changed our defense, they kept going downhill and getting threes,” Fothergill said. “They just kept getting offensive rebounds, and I think that’s what hurt us the most.” The Lady Bisons seemed to be very aggressive the whole game. They made several drives to the basket that resulted in 39 free-throw attempts, yet they could only account for 25. “We were trying to get to the foul line on offense, but we just couldn’t knock down those easy shots like we have been,” Fothergill added. Spring sports are in full spring while winter sports are wrapping up. Here’s what you may have missed this week in Nashville sports. Lipscomb Softball: Lady Bisons softball continues their strong start, this week behind senior pitcher Ashley Anderson who pitched 12 shutout innings during the team’s sweep of University of North Florida. She received her first Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Week award for her shutout performance. Lipscomb followed up that sweep with another, this time over Ohio. Their record sits at 17-3 overall, and their next game is a double header against Florida Gulf Coast University on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. Lipscomb Baseball: Bisons baseball is currently on a three game winning streak after wins over Connecticut and Western Kentucky. Junior shortstop Grant Massey received the Atlantic Sun Baseball Player of the Week after he had three RBI’s and seven walks in the Bisons three wins. Lipscomb has a three game series against Oakland this weekend, including a double header on Saturday at Dugan Field, starting at 12 p.m. Lipscomb Men’s Basketball: The Bisons basketball season ended in a double overtime thriller at the first level of the A-Sun Men’s Basketball Championship against ETSU on Tuesday. Despite having a 16 point lead in the second half, the Bisons would fall one point short in double overtime. Junior forward Malcolm Smith led Lipscomb with 24 points and scored his 1000th point in the loss. The Bisons finished with a 15-15 record, the first time they’ve been at .500 since the 2010-2011 season. The Lady Bisons (6-22) put together one of their most complete efforts of the season in a 76-74 victory over the East Tennessee State Bucs (9-19) on Thursday night at Allen Arena. A go-ahead 3-pointer from junior guard Sara Bliss 13.8 seconds left gave Lipscomb a 74-72 lead, which they did not relinquish. The game started off on a good note for Lipscomb. Bliss secured the opening tip and euro-stepped her way to a 3-point play. She ended up with 14 points on the night including three 3’s. “I knew we were down, and I heard the bench yelling that the shot clock was going down, it was at five or six seconds,” Bliss said. “So, Chandler kicked it to me, and my coaches always tell me to shoot, so I shot.” “I’ll be as honest as I can be,” said Lady Bisons head coach Greg Brown, “We do that [play] every day. That’s another kick-out 3 for us. That’s the second time she’s done that. The best thing about it, it wasn’t run for her. We had three options that led to a great reversal pass to a wide open player.” Lipscomb shot well from behind the arc the entire night. The team finished 10-for-20 from deep in the game. Redshirt freshman guard Chandler Cooper and redshirt sophomore guard Danay Fothergill, along with Bliss, led the Lady Bisons with three long range baskets each. The Lady Bisons softball team swept Ohio University Wednesday afternoon at Draper Diamond. Game one was pretty quiet until the fourth inning. Ohio University sophomore infielder Alexia Cortez reached on an error then stole second. Cortez scored on a throwing error to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. The Lady Bisons had a couple of hits through five innings, but the game-changing hit came in the sixth. Junior outfielder/infielder Gracey Aguirre got walked. Senior infielder Kristen Sturdivant hit a two-run homerun over the left center field fence to give the Lipscomb the 2-1 lead. “We knew we were going to have to make adjustments throughout the game, and I knew going up to the plate, with Gracey on base, it was my time to step up,” Sturdivant said. The Bobcats threatened in the seventh inning. Ohio’s senior infielder Alexandria Basquez got a leadoff single and then was bunted over to second. Sophomore pitcher Savannah Jo Dorsey hit a single to center field. Lipscomb’s outfielder/infielder Brittany Elmore threw the tying run out at the plate. Ohio’s junior outfielder Dakota Pyles singled to load the bases with two outs. Lipscomb pitcher Ashley Anderson got a strikeout to end the game. Anderson remains unbeaten with a 7-0 record and finished the game with seven strikeouts while giving up two hits. “We showed great composure in that tight situation, and Ashley [Anderson] did a nice job of staying focused,” said Lady Bisons head coach Kristin Ryman. The Lipscomb Bisons baseball team made a big statement this weekend against the University of Connecticut by taking two of the three games played. The Bisons pushed the Huskies to the brink in game one of the series by forcing extra innings, but failed to execute when it came down to the end. Junior shortstop Grant Massey did, however, launch his first home run of the year in the second inning to give the Bisons a 2-0 lead that eventually faded. UConn got on the board in the fifth inning after third baseman Bryan Daniello laced a line drive into the right field corner and eventually scored on an infield ground out. The Huskies took their first lead of the game in the seventh after putting several at bats together. Max McDowell was hit by a pitch and moved into scoring position. He was then driven home by a single to left field. UConn continually executed when they needed to. The Huskies capitalized on some Bison mistakes which lead them to the 6-4 extra inning victory. In game two of the series, the Bisons were in familiar territory. They once again forced UConn into extra innings and this timed executed. Senior designated hitter Chad Shannon drew a bases loaded walk in the tenth inning to give Lipscomb the 4-3-comeback win. The Bisons got a good start to the tenth inning after Massey bounced a double off the center field wall. The Lipscomb Bisons men’s basketball team won one for the lone senior against the Stetson Hatters Saturday at Allen Arena. In an early morning tipoff, the Bisons secured a 83-76 win over Stetson. As fans munched on free goodies from Fox’s Donut Den, the Bisons engaged in a highly defensive match. In the first half, Lipscomb only made three of 13 attempts from the 3-point line, including the first points of the game, a 3-pointer from senior guard/forward Khion Sankey. Despite the troubles from beyond the perimeter, Lipscomb inched closer and closer to Stetson’s cementing lead, with the Hatters up 38-36 at the break. In the second half, the Bisons began to pick up steam. The 3-point problems began to erode, as the team made five of their 11 attempts. Lipscomb also out-rebounded Stetson 19-to-12 in the latter half. While Lipscomb never truly pulled away from the Hatters, the Bisons would hold on to win 83-76. “It feels great, especially to get a win at home,” redshirt freshman J.C. Hampton said. Freshman guard Josh Williams led the team in both scoring and rebounding with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Junior guard Martin Smith was not too far behind with 20 points. Junior guard Malcolm Smith had 18 points and six rebounds. Hampton had nine points and five rebounds. Fouling from Stetson helped Lipscomb’s cause, as the Bisons went 31-for-40 from the line. Malcom Smith hit 10 of his 12 attempts. With the win, the Bisons close the regular season with a winning record overall (15-14) and in conference (10-8).
