Off-season facelift has men’s tennis team looking for A-Sun glory

A complete transformation of the men’s tennis team could surprise those who put the Bisons at the bottom in the preseason poll – based on last year’s 4-14 record – into A-Sun contenders. “This team is certainly the deepest team we have had here at Lipscomb, and we are expecting some great things from this group,” head coach Andrew Harris said. “The challenge for this group of guys will be mixing in the new players as well as the returning players.” It’s a welcome challenge for the team that was bolstered with five top players in recent months. Over Christmas break, the Bisons strengthened their lineup with the addition of three new players to their roster. Combined with their two freshman recruits acquired in the fall, the Bisons now have a deeper roster and hopes of surprising foes with a seemingly brand-new team. One of the Bisons’ transfers is actually a familiar face to Lipscomb. Sophomore Colby Shaw came to Lipscomb for his freshman year but transferred to the University of Kentucky for the fall semester of his sophomore year. Shaw had an impressive freshman season with the Bisons, posting a 9-3 singles record. However, for five months of his freshman year, he sat out of tennis while recovering from mononucleosis. Shaw attributes much of his decision to transfer to UK to the impact the illness had on his experience at Lipscomb. After spending a semester at UK, Shaw says it was easy to reverse course and return to Lipscomb. “As soon as I decided to leave and stop playing tennis, I realized I was going to regret it,”...

Smith strikes out 15 on way to win over Illinois State

Senior pitcher Josh Smith threw his second complete game of the season on Friday night.  Smith allowed one run on 7 hits on his way to a 5-3 win over the Redbirds of Illinois State. Friday night the Bisons opened up their weekend series with the Redbirds of Illinois State. Josh Smith made his sixth start of the season.  Smith, 4-1 on the year, was coming off of a season-high 15-strikeout game. Smith would not disappoint in this outing either.  Throwing  nine complete innings , Smith allowed one run on seven hits. Smith walked one and struck out 15, again. Illinois State came into the game with a 12-10 record.  The Redbirds had won seven out of their last nine. It was very important for Lipscomb to keep SIU off the bases.  Coming into Friday night’s game the Redbirds had 47 stolen bases, nearly surpassing their total from all of last season. The Bisons gave Smith an early cushion in the first.  Zach Messer drove in freshman Lee Wilson on a beautifully executed hit-and-run.  Messer drove a fastball right up the middle as Wilson was attempting to steal second. After three shutout innings from Smith, Lipscomb added another run.  Senior Tyler Wilson singled up the middle to score M.L. Williams.  Lee Wilson and Corey Hale also scored later in the inning. The Redbirds answered in the fourth scoring one run on two hits. Smith struggled in the sixth, allowing two runs on three hits.  Smith got out of the inning on his own though, striking out a Redbird for the third out of the inning.  The strikeout was Smith’s...

Hodzic, A-Sun player of the year

Bison center Adnan Hodzic was named the Atlantic Sun Conference’s player of the year for the 2009-2010 season. Hodzic, a junior, ended the regular season averaging 22.4 points per game and 8.8 rebounds per game.  His 22.4 points per is good enough for sixth in the nation among NCAA schools.  The Sarajevo, Bosnia, native has scored 20 plus points in 11 straight games, and has scored 10 or more in 56 consecutive.  That 56-game streak is best in the nation as well. Hodzic’s last two games definitely did not hurt his chances in being named player of the year.  In the last two games the center averaged 30.85 points and 18.5 rebounds per game.  Both games were wins for the Bisons. “I don’t think it was those performances that pushed him over the top,” Head Coach Scott Sanderson said. “It all played out really well, [Adnan] played well all year long.  He was really solid and did not have very many bad games.  Those last two games, though, definitely did not hurt his chances.” Hodzic’s 37 point game last Thursday against Mercer was the most scored by any Bison since 2002 when Jeff Dancy scored 38 against TSU. Lipscomb guard Josh Slater was named to A-Sun First Team as well.  Slater, a junior, averaged 17.2 points, 5.3 assists, and 5.5 rebounds per game.  Slater joins Belmont’s Alex Renfroe as the two only players in the last 10 years of the A-sun to average 15 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds over a season’s time. “I think Adnan and Josh both had years that were warranted to win the award,”...
