A few familiar faces will be joining show host Amy Grant at this year’s Lighting of the Green. The tenth annual show will feature American Idol finalist and Christian artist Danny Gokey, Dove-winning gospel singer and actress Tamela Mann, singer/songwriter Jon Guerra, multi-talented family The Willis Clan, Brother Parker, Lipscomb student choruses and others. Walt Leaver, vice president for university relations, spoke to the impact Grant has had on the show. “Lighting of the Green has become a beloved tradition in Nashville, and we couldn’t have made that happen without the support and generosity of Amy Grant, who gives of her time and talent to perform and to schedule an exciting slate of artists each year,” Leaver said. The free. rain-or-shine concert starts at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2, on the Allen Arena Mall. Festivities will begin at 4, including the Merry Marketplace at the arena. Free photos with Santa Claus are also available. Food or cash donations will be accepted for the Second Harvest Food Bank at the event. By Bridgette Begle and Brianne Welch The ninth annual Lighting of the Green brought rich tradition and holiday spirit to the Nashville community Tuesday night. Show regular Amy Grant was joined tonight by Ben Rector, David Phelps, Brenda Lee, Nicole C. Mullen, Hymns for Hunger & Friends (feat. Cindy Morgan and Andrew Greer) and the Stella family, including Nashville‘s Lennon & Maisy, for a night of music, merriment and plenty of bright Christmas lights. Fourth and fifth grade students from Lipscomb Academy, as well as the high school chorus, joined the University chorus on stage throughout the performance. The younger chorus tipped off the night with a medley of holiday classics, and the University chorus sang “Deck the Halls.” “We came here to hear one of our children sing in the chorus,” parent Heather Duncan said.” Our daughter is in the fifth grade at the campus school, so we’re looking forward to hearing everyone sing tonight.” About halfway through the show, Brenda Lee, singer of holiday classic “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” came onto the stage and ignited enthusiasm throughout the crowd. She asked for “eight really good singers,” and ended up with about 15 children, ranging from ages five to 20, to join her in the Christmas classic “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” Lee shared her delight in being a part of the night’s fun. “You know, when miss Amy Grant asks you to do something, it’s just awful hard to say no,” Lee said. “So I’m awfully proud to do this for Lipscomb. For the first time in its six year history, the Lipscomb-based variety show Tokens is being broadcast weekly. The show can be heard on world famous country station WSM 650 AM on Sundays from 6-7 p.m. The broadcasts are currently pre-recorded from earlier episodes. These broadcasts will continue until the first live show of the fall on Nov. 24, followed by two holiday specials on Thanksgiving night and Christmas night, concluding the weekly broadcasts. For those unfamiliar with Tokens, the shows feature a variety of acts across various fields to provide a night of music and comedy that even touches on social issues. The show was created by Lipscomb’s own Dr. Lee C. Camp, a Bible professor on campus. To Camp, the mix of talented acts performing together, especially during the holiday specials at the Ryman Auditorium, provides for unique atmosphere for the audience. “The Ryman is just a magical place,” Camp said. “That show itself is always very, very special because of the kind of show we’re doing there. When you’re able to weave together theology and really good music and roots/Americana music, all of that is what the Ryman Auditorium has always been about. So that night is always very special at the Ryman, and it has an almost magical feel about it. By Bridgette Begle and Cory Woodroof Allen Arena traded basketballs for golden trophies Tuesday night as the best and brightest of Christian music gathered to celebrate this year’s Dove Award winners. The 44th annual show made its home at Lipscomb after spending two years at Fox Theater in Atlanta. Industry legends Amy Grant and Kirk Franklin were the evening’s emcees. Gospel Music Association CEO Jackie Patillo thanked Lipscomb for their guidance in hosting the event in its return to Music City, a longtime home of the awards. “We are at the Allen Arena because of the vision of the leadership here,” Patillo said. “President Randy Lowry has opened his doors to us and his heart.” Dr. Lowry told the estimated crowd of 2,800 of the importance of having fellow believers join the campus to celebrate an art that ties directly in with faith. “We have about 200,000 visitors a year on this campus, but there are no visitors that are more important to us than those who share the Christian story with us,” Lowry said. “A lot goes on in higher education, and a lot of it is so far from the story we believe in. “But at Lipscomb University, we are going to be Christian intentionally, we are going to be Christian courageously and we are going to be Christian graciously.” Lowry noted that arena donors Jim and Linda Allen were in attendance of the evening’s events. “They had a vision 15 years ago and dedicated a tremendous proportion of their resources to build this – not knowing you specifically, but having you in mind. Amy Grant and Kirk Franklin will co-host this year’s Dove Awards, set to be held at Lipscomb’s Allen Arena next month. Grant, a multiple Dove Award-winning artist, is no stranger to campus. She joins the Lipscomb community every holiday season for the annual Lighting of the Green concert. Grant released her seventeenth album, How Mercy Looks from Here, in May. Franklin is a renowned gospel artist and multiple Dove winner. He won the Grammy for Best Gospel Album in 2012 for Hello Fear, his eleventh album. Franklin also currently hosts the reality singing competition show Sunday’s Best. “There are not too many names more synonymous with Christian and Gospel music than our hosts Amy and Kirk,” GMA Executive Director Jackie Patillo said in a press release. “We are so grateful for their contributions to the Dove Awards throughout the years and we’re excited to have them as the co-pilots of what is turning out to be one of the most compelling nights of music ever on the Dove stage.” The first wave of presenters and performers were also announced. TobyMac, Tamela Mann, Michael W. Smith and Gaither Vocal Band will all be taking the stage to perform. Lecrae, Pastor Rick Warren, Jaci Velasquez, Dr. Bobby Jones and Isaac Carree are set to present awards. More talent will be announced soon.
