Lipscomb baseball took a 5-1 loss to Stetson Friday, but came out Saturday to take a 3-1 victory for senior night at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium. In Friday’s matchup, the Bisons could not get their bats going against the Hatter’s starting pitcher, Mitchell Jordan. Jordan pitched a complete game for Stetson. Lipscomb scored their only run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single from sophomore Hunter Hanks. The Bisons could not string enough base hits together to score more runs. But things started to look up for senior night on Saturday. The Bisons started the scoring in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice-fly from senior Grant Massey and an RBI single from senior Jonathan Allison. “This class of seniors has been very special to me,” Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand said. “We have been through a lot together.” Junior redshirt Adam Lee chipped in with a home run in the bottom of the fifth to add to the score for the Bisons. “Adam has had a great season for us offensively,” Forehand said. “He had a good swing to put a charge on the ball for a homerun.” Freshman Jeffrey Passantino had a great start on Saturday for the Bisons. Passantino went eight innings and gave the bullpen some rest before the last week of the season. This makes two starts in a row that Passantino has gone eight innings. “We are beginning to expect this from him all the time,” Forehand said. “He puts our team in a good position to win every time he goes out there on the mound.” With this win,...

After leading 2-1 at the beginning of the game, the Lipscomb baseball team lost 5-2 to Austin Peay Wednesday afternoon at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium. The initial lead faded in the top of the fifth, as the Governors tied it up with a run-scoring double by starting pitcher Alex Robles. The game slipped away from Lipscomb after the seventh inning. Austin Peay scored two more runs on a single in the top of the eighth. Robles got his second run scoring double to give the Governors a five to two lead. Junior Jaesung (J) Hwang, the Bisons starting pitcher, made his first appearance since May 2013. He pitched five innings and got a no decision for his intial start this year. “J was great,” Lipscomb coach Jeff Forehand said. “We have been anxiously awaiting his return. He is going to be one of our top guys. I thought he had a very solid performance.” Senior Grant Massey was the only Bison to have RBI’s for the whole game. He drove in two runs on a single in the bottom of the third inning. “I knew I had an open bag,” Massey said. “So I knew he would probably go off speed right there and pound it away. I was looking outside and pounded the four hole right there.” Massey added that the Bisons were able to turn the most double plays of the season, with three in one game. “J was hitting his spots everywhere, keeping the ball down and putting it where it needed to go to get ground balls,” Massey said. “It was easy from there on out.” The...

The Bisons defeated Austin Peay 69-63 during the last game before their winter break Sunday night in Allen Arena. Sophomore guard Josh Williams led the way for the Bisons, scoring 21 points. Three other players put up double digits, including sophomore forward Brett Wishon with 14, senior forward Malcolm Smith with 11 and freshman guard Nathan Moran with 10. Austin Peay’s Chris Freeman scored 15, and Chris Horton scored 13 points. Austin Peay dropped to 4-8. It took a little time, but the Lipscomb Bisons now have a Division 1 win in the W column. The team (3-5) defeated the Tennessee State Tigers (2-7) 77-68 Saturday at Allen Arena in an afternoon tipoff. Senior forward Malcolm Smith (22 points) led the Bisons’ attack inside the paint, where the team amassed 44 of its 77 points. In the first half, the Bisons and Tigers looked evenly matched. Both teams struggled early to generate any sort of offensive pressure. But, Smith helped spark Lipscomb with five straight to give the home team a 9-4 lead with 12:20 to half. The Tigers began to spark their own game from the perimeter soon after to get back in the game. After a quick lead switch-off in the low 20s, the Bisons took back momentum and led at half, 36-31. To start the second, the Tigers came out hot on a 7-0 run to get the 37-36 lead at 18:01, but a 3 from freshman guard Aaron Korn settled the Bisons down. After TSU led by 8, the Bisons got back into the game and inched their way to a strong lead late in the game. Lipscomb never let TSU back in and picked up their third win of the season. Smith led all scorers with 22 and all rebounders with 8, while TSU’s junior guard Marcus Roper was not too far behind in points with 21. The fall sports teams are off to a great start this semester. Here is a recap on the games that have already been completed so far. Volleyball The Lipscomb volleyball team opened up the 2014 season with a 2-1 record at the Kansas Invitational. Friday Aug. 29 started with a disappointing season opener, losing 3-1 to No. 23 Creighton. Junior Brittany Estes recored her first career triple double in the match with 12 kills, 12 digs and 10 assists. Junior Bri McCombs led Lipscomb with 19 digs. Senior Lauren Ford added 18 digs. The big win came later that night against No. 22 Kansas. The Lady Bisons were down 2-0, but rallied back winning three sets in a row to get the 3-2 victory. The win was the first for the program over a ranked opponent. Lipscomb took set three 25-14, set four 26-24 and set five 15-12. Senior Jewell Dobson had a match-high 20 kills. Estes notched a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs. McCombs recorded a match-high 20 digs. Coach Brandon Rosenthal earned his 200th win after the Lady Bisons defeated Utah Valley 3-1 on Aug. 30. Lipscomb won the first set 25-23, third set 25-17 and fourth set 25-15. Estes had 10 kills in the match, and earned a spot on the All-Tournament team for the invitational. Ford recorded a match high 15 kills. McCombs led the team with 14 digs. Junior Molly Spitznagle’s hitting percentage was .562 in the match with 10 kills.
