Summer construction brings new life to campus

When students return for the fall semester, they will notice a lot of new attractions on campus. Over the summer, many construction teams will be hard at work to build several new projects. Kim Chaudoin, Director of Communication and Marketing, shed some light on each of the sites of construction and renovation. The first thing one might notice when walking through Bison Square will be the new Osman Fountain. Built to honor the Memory of Ty Osman II, a Harding student who died in a car accident last year, the fountain will also feature a baptistry. “We thought it was just a really fitting thing to have because our student’s faith is such an important part of what we do here at Lipscomb,” Chaudoin said. “Dr. Lowry has a vision of this being a place where if students decide they want to commit their life to Christ that they might come here and be baptized, right here in the middle of campus.” Students and faculty in the field of sciences can look forward to a new pharmacy and health sciences research facility, which will be located behind the McFarland building. The 15,000 square foot addition will include classrooms, labs and offices. “It’s our intent that just about any student that studies sciences will go through here at least once during their studies,” Chaudoin said. “We’re on target to finish by fall semester, so students should be able to use it soon.” At the Swang building, students are going to return to a new auditorium in Swang 108. The room has been stripped clean and will be receiving new seating,...

Campus Notes – May 2

We’re happy to introduce a new weekly feature on Lumination specifically designed for the summer months. Any bit of campus news that get passed along through email or other Lipscomb outlets will be gathered here every Thursday so that you can stay in the loop while you’re away. From the Lipscomb Bookstore: We’re buying books back this week!!!!! Have a graphing calculator? We’ll buy that back too!! Rented your books this year? Rentals are due back by the end of the day Friday. From Jeff Wilson, director of Campus Plant and Retail Operations: It has come to our attention that some members of the Lipscomb community have planned to fill the pond located on the south side of campus with detergent and soap as an end-of-the-year prank. While the prank may seem harmless, those substances are deadly for the animals that live in and on the pond as well as the vegetation surrounding it. It also costs thousands of dollars to repair the equipment and replace the plants and animals that could be damaged or lost. In addition, the pond drains into Brown’s Creek, which could cause harmful effects for quite a distance downstream.  Our campus has zero tolerance for harmful and destructive behavior, and we ask that you honor the spirit of respect for our community and our physical campus. Thank you for helping us keep this area one that is safe for our community as well as the plants and animals that call it home. From Karen Morgan: The parking lots on the north side of campus,  with entrance off Belmont behind McFarland, will be restricted beginning May 6...

Country Music Marathon heightens security following Boston bombings

In a race of over 30,000 participants and thousands of spectators, security measures are known to be taken. Because of the recent tragedy at the Boston Marathon, the upcoming St. Jude Country Music Marathon in Nashville, one of the larger races in the nation, is sure to affect everyone involved. The sport of running is a complex exercise that people either hate or love, and one of the biggest reasons people find joy in running comes from racing. “Running in races gives you a goal to focus on, to prevent you from running aimlessly,” junior Exercise Science major Stephanie Silvers said. “It fosters competition and increases motivation- plus the atmosphere and high are awesome.” The energy and enthusiasm at races are what keep the runners going. Most runners don’t think about their safety during a race because each person running chooses to be there for the joy they find in the sport, and each person spectating chooses to be there cheering on the runners. The Country Music Marathon benefiting St. Jude Children’s Hospital, and as one of the biggest marathon’s in the nation, it already has plans in action to secure the safety of the people in Nashville. Police Chief Steve Anderson responded to the tragic event in Boston for those concerned. “Nevertheless, the events of yesterday will certainly now become a part of the safety and security plan. Our partners with the FBI and ATF are working closely with us and will be a part of the meetings over the coming days,” Chief Anderson said. “Although we may have to get there earlier to get into our corral...
