Lipscomb encourages community to aid Belmont family after house fire

Lipscomb always seeks to be a community, and now, the school has the opportunity to help a friend at our sister campus Belmont. Matt Barnett,  the assistant head coach and pitching coach for the Belmont Bruins baseball team, lost his home in a fire earlier this month. A resident of La Vergne, Barnett is a husband to his wife Natalie and a father to his 7-year-old boy Easton and his 18-month-old boy Braxton. Belmont’s athletic department began accepting donations immediately on behalf of the family, and Lipscomb has joined in the relief efforts. In a campus goal to raise $10,000, Lipscomb have already raised $8,327. Lipscomb introduces Casey Alexander as new men’s basketball coach

Lipscomb formally introduced Casey Alexander to the community as the new coach of the men’s basketball team Sunday afternoon at the Ezell Center. The university officially confirmed Alexander’s hire Saturday evening. Alexander was a former Belmont Bruin player and coach who has spent the past two seasons coaching at Stetson. Lipscomb Athletic Director Philip Hutcheson kicked off the event, talking about the process of hiring a coach. Hutcheson said that when looking for a coach, “what we care about here is excellence, and what we care about are people who are connected and committed to what the mission of Lipscomb is about.” The selection committee, consisting of Hutcheson, Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Student Life Scott McDowell and women’s basketball coach Greg Brown, interviewed a number of candidates who were interested in the vacant position. Former coach Scott Sanderson resigned in April. Hutcheson praised the quality of the candidate that applied for the job, but said that the committee decided that Alexander was the best for the program. “There was one guy whose name rose to the top, and he contacted me very early on about the job and said he was interested,” Hutcheson said. Hutcheson said he had conversations with people close to both Lipscomb and Alexander who reassured him of what a good coach and person Alexander was. In an early conversation with Alexander, Hutcheson said he was impressed with the candidate’s vision for the school after being asked why he was interested in the coaching position. “[Alexander] said ‘I want to be at a place that still values the Christian mission that Lipscomb...

Casey Alexander named head coach of men’s basketball team

The university officially confirmed reports Saturday evening that former Stetson head coach and Belmont assistant Casey Alexander had been named the new coach of the Lipscomb men’s basketball team. The news first broke Friday night after a story was filed by Mike Organ of the Tennessean. Alexander comes to Lipscomb after serving two seasons as the head coach of the Stetson Hatters, a fellow Atlantic Sun team. During his time with the Hatters, Alexander posted up a 24-36 overall record. A member of the 1992-95 Belmont Bruins squad, Alexander worked as an assistant coach for Belmont for 16 seasons before making the move to DeLand, Florida in 2011. Alexander replaces former head coach Scott Sanderson, who resigned from the university in April after 14 seasons. Lipscomb Athletic Director Philip Hutcheson shared his excitement in the hiring through a press release issued by the university. “Casey has been part of successful programs wherever he has been,”  Hutcheson said. “But, what I’m most impressed with is his understanding of the spirit, character and mission of Lipscomb University. He shares our values and is a proven player and coach. Casey has observed the Lipscomb program for a long time, and he understands in his bones who we are.” In the statement, the newly hired Alexander said that he’s looking forward to beginning his time as coach for the Bisons. “I’m very grateful to Lipscomb for giving me the opportunity to lead this great program,” Alexander said. “I appreciate their belief in me. Lipscomb University is a perfect fit for my family and me. We couldn’t be more excited about this opportunity. The philosophy...

Bisons fail to even out ‘Battle’ record

Despite a strong start, the Lipscomb Bisons men’s basketball team couldn’t claim the season’s second ‘Battle of the Boulevard’ title, losing a 100-66 contest with the Belmont Bruins at the Curb Event Center. Belmont had the series’ first win in November at Allen Arena in the Bisons’ season opener. Lipscomb kept early momentum away from the Bruins, who suffered from poor shooting early on. Once Belmont began to hit crucial shots, the Bruins caught the lead and began to build on it. The Bisons kept the margin at a manageable distance until the middle of the second half. Junior Khion Sankey put up 15 for the Bisons, with sophomore Martin Smith not too far behind with 13. Freshman Stephen Hurt had 11, and all three Bisons had five rebounds a piece for the game. Sankey said he feels that tonight’s missteps must be improved upon for this weekend’s match-up against UT Martin. “We’ve just got to play aggressive,” Sankey said. “We’ve got to come out strong. We’ve got to play for 40 minutes.” Looking ahead, the Bisons return to Allen Arena on Saturday to play the 3-5 UT Martin Skyhawks, following that up with a trip up to Lexington, Ky., to take on the now-unranked 5-3 Kentucky Wildcats on Dec. 15. Sankey said he’s confident that the team will successfully move on from tonight’s loss. “We’re going to get better from...
Bisons open season in ‘Boulevard’ loss

Bisons open season in ‘Boulevard’ loss

The Lipscomb Bisons men’s basketball team fell short of claiming the 131st Battle of the Boulevard in an 89-60 loss to the Belmont Bruins. Senior Deonte Alexander led the Bisons in scoring with 14 points (including four 3-pointers). Junior Khion Sankey led the team in rebounds and assists with 7 and 4 respectively, while gaining 11 points of his own. Alexander said that he feels the team is going to need to fix tonight’s mistakes going into the rest of the season. “We’ve got to get back to the drawing board tomorrow. They beat us on a lot of the things we’ve been practicing on,” Alexander said. “We turned the ball over a lot tonight, and we’ve just got to take care of the ball and play solid defense.” Alexander thanked the fans for their attendance of tonight’s game and asked for their continued support throughout the season. Redshirt sophomore Carter Sanderson, who had 13 points on the night, also noted his appreciation to the fans, expressing the importance of the crowd’s energy. “I really appreciate all the support. It was a great crowd,” Sanderson said. “I thought they were energized and loud, and we fed off them a lot.” The Bisons will play the final “Boulevard” game of the season against the Bruins on Dec. 4 at Belmont.
