NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Behind record-setting pitching and timely hitting, the Lipscomb baseball team swept a doubleheader from Middle Tennessee 3-2 and 3-1 on Tuesday at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium in Nashville. Game one of the twinbill saw the Lipscomb (3-1) pitchers rack up a school record 16 strikeouts against Middle Tennessee (1-3) led by eight from junior starter Josh Cotham. The righty went five solid innings allowing only one earned run, three hits and a pair of walks. Cotham was joined in the strikeout parade by junior southpaw with a pair and fellow lefty Gil Rehwinkel (1-0), who earned the win on the bump. Rehwinkel tossed the final two and one-thirds innings and fanned six of the seven Blue Raiders he faced to pick up his first career. “When we play a doubleheader, it’s a lot of long baseball,” said Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand. “Nine-inning doubleheaders are long but we need a lot of people to get in and get their innings in. We pitched it pretty good today. “Strikeouts come and we like them but it’s not necessarily how we want to pitch all the time. It just worked out in our favor. We don’t want to go for the strikeout every time. The Lipscomb men’s basketball team clinched a spot in the 2012 Atlantic Sun Championship, the conference office announced Monday evening. Lipscomb is the 7th team to earn a berth to the tournament which runs Feb. 29 to March 3 at Mercer University in Macon, Ga. NASHVILLE (Feb. 11, 2012) – The Bison bench may have been one man short on Saturday, but that did not stop the team from scoring 99 points in their overtime victory over Stetson. Lipscomb outscored the Hatters 25-17 in overtime to improve their conference record to 7-6. The Bison’s overall record is now 12-13. This was the first game since senior guard Jordan Burgason was suspended after he violated team rules. The team shot 3-of-15 from the 3-point line on Saturday. The 20 percent shooting performance is far worse than the Bison’s season-long percentage of 38.4 percent. Deonte Alexander, the team’s leading scorer versus Stetson (27), made two of the 3-pointers. The nine points that were accounted for from three is a season-low for the team. The second lowest total is 15 when the Bisons shot 5-24 from three against Austin Peay State and 5-13 versus North Florida. However, the team’s 99 points scored against Stetson is the second highest total recorded all season. The first was also against Stetson, a game the Bisons won 104-103. Both games were decided in overtime. Lipscomb continues its road trip Monday night against Florida Gulf Coast in Ft. Myers, Fla, at 6 p.m. central. In the last installment of the series we discussed Belmont’s winning streak that began in 1967. Today, we dive into the game that ended that streak. It was 1972 and the Rebels had dominated the Bisons for the last four years. Senior Jordan Burgason drained nine 3-pointers tying his own single-game record and posted a career-high 33 points Saturday afternoon as Lipscomb defeated ETSU 73-65 in Johnson City, Tenn. He also hit nine treys at Iowa State on Dec. 21 setting Lipscomb’s NCAA era record. The Bison (10-10, 5-3 A-Sun) connected on a season high 15 three-pointers against ETSU (10-8, 5-3 A-Sun). In the last eight games, Burgason has hit an unfathomable 4.8 treys a game and is shooting 59.3 percent from beyond the arc. Lipscomb plays at USC Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C., Monday at 6 p.m. central. USC Upstate is coming off a 79-78 win on a last second shot against Belmont Saturday. The Bison didn’t score in a span of 13 possessions over 7:31 and allowed ETSU to go on a 17-0 run to take a 51-44 lead.
