The Atlantic Sun Conference and ESPN have teamed up to deliver exclusive content on its signature multi-screen sports network ESPN3. A total of 20 live league basketball games will be distributed in 2011-12. The addition of games on ESPN3 extends ESPN’s current five-year deal with the Atlantic Sun, which continues through the 2013-14 season. ESPN3 will exclusively carry three Lipscomb basketball games this season, all originating from Allen Arena. The first broadcast will be the women’s game against cross-town rival Belmont on Feb. 4. The Bisons’ final two home games against USC Upstate (Feb. 18) and ETSU (Feb. 20) will also be broadcast. Each game is set to tip at 6:30 p.m. “We are very excited about our expanded agreement with ESPN and the broad media exposure we’ll be providing for our institutions and our outstanding student-athletes,” said Commissioner Ted Gumbart. “This is a very big step for the A-Sun and we look forward to continued growth in our media package with ESPN moving forward.” ESPN3 will be the home of the conference’s women’s basketball package, which highlights each A-Sun institution through five regular season games and all of the 2012 General Shale Brick Atlantic Sun Basketball Championship quarterfinal contests. A seven-game regular season men’s package, in addition to men’s quarterfinal action, will also be part of the exclusive agreement. Lipscomb lost its first game in over a week to A-Sun foe Mercer Thursday night. Mercer grabbed the lead right after the second half started and held on to win 79-72. Lipscomb head coach Scott Sanderson continues to emphasize to his freshman-loaded squad the necessity to listen and learn. While the Bisons fell 79-72 in their Atlantic Sun Conference opener Thursday against Mercer in Allen Arena, the game will be a teaching opportunity for Sanderson. “I thought Mercer weathered the storm in the first half, but we didn’t weather their storm in the second half,” said Sanderson. Lipscomb was up 30-23 with six minutes to play in the first half and allowed the Bears to tie the game at 34 going into the locker room. Mercer opened the second half with a three and led the rest of the game. They shot 58.3 percent in the second half and 50 percent overall. Lipscomb shot 30.3 percent in the second period and 38.1 percent overall. Turnovers were also an issue for the Bisons. After having 13 or fewer miscues in each of the previous four games, Lipscomb turned the ball over 21 times. “All of our turnovers were pretty much self-induced,” said Sanderson. “We didn’t turn the ball over because of what they did, but because of what we did.” Freshman forward Malcolm Smith posted a career-best 22 points in 14 minutes off the bench. Smith was a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line as the Bisons shot 17-of-18 from the line, their best output since hitting 21-of-22 attempts (95.5 percent) against Florida Atlantic on Jan. 19, 2006. In a letter to the Lipscomb community, University President Randy Lowry announced a major overhaul of the campus school. Thanks to donors Bill and Neika Stephens, the middle school will be moved from its current location to the site where the elementary school currently sits. The school will be a two-story K-8 building. In addition to the relocation of the middle school, a new campus school will be built on the property located between Granny White and the high school’s athletic complex. The buildings that the high school currently uses will be renovated and used by the university. The $10 million donation is the largest ever presented to the campus school and the third largest to the Lipscomb community. The letter reads as follows: I am pleased to share with you an announcement we made last night to our friends and supporters at the Associates Gala. The Stephens Christian Trust, an entity founded by Bill Stephens, has challenged us in our Lipscomb:Next effort by making a $10 million gift for Campus School. This represents the largest gift ever made to the Campus School and the third largest gift ever made to Lipscomb University. The gift has been given to support the activities and programs of the Campus School, the largest K-12 independent school in Middle Tennessee. In addition to announcing that gift last evening, I shared a vision for the Campus School that includes a renovated elementary school to be joined at Harding and Granny White by a new middle school on that site. Jordan Burgason scored 19 points to pace Lipscomb to a 97-69 win over Freed-Hardeman Tuesday night. The Bisons defense had 16 steals and forced 24 turnovers. Lipscomb, as expected, got plenty of contributions from their freshmen. Malcolm Smith had 14 points and eight rebounds. Starting guard Zavion Williams added 12 points and eight rebounds. Damarius Smith, a redshirt freshman starter, scored seven points and had six rebounds. Scott Sanderson and his team will open up the season tonight with an exhibition game against the Freed Hardman Lions in Allen Arena. You can follow all of the action here with our live blog. “We want to learn what our guys can and can’t do in a game setting,” Sanderson said. “I know what they can and can’t do in practice. I want to see what they can do with people in the stands.” Expected starters for the Bisons are four familiar faces in Justin Glenn, Jordan Burgason, Jacob Arnett and Robert Boyd. The fifth start is yet to be known, but all signs are pointing to a freshman getting the nod tonight. Sanderson stresses he will be watching all of his players, but he will be taking a long look at the play of forward Malcolm Smith and power forward Marvin Williams, both freshmen. “The two news guys that I really want to see what they can do with people in the stands are probably Marvin Williams and Malcolm Smith,” Sanderson said. “I want to see in a game setting if they can think and play the game the way we have practiced.” The two teams have not met since Nov. 5, 2009.
