BREAKING: All of Lipscomb Bisons basketball games will air on 102.5 The Game

Lipscomb’s athletic director, Phillip Hutcheson, announced this morning on 102.5 The Game that all of Lipscomb’s basketball games will be broadcasted this year on the station. “We’ve been looking for a partner for a while now,” Hutcheson said. “Two-thirds of Lipscomb alumni live within this listening area.” Formerly known as 1025 The Party, The Game is now the flagship station for the Nashville Predators and ESPN radio. “Ten of our thirteen guys are from the listening area,” Hutcheson said. “We’re thrilled to be on the air.” Long time play-by-play man Jonathon Seamon will be calling the games, just like always. He’ll have a new color guy, though, since his son, Benjamin, just graduated. Lipscomb is partnering the Jackson Family of companies that will be the presenting sponsor.   We’ll have more, later....

Men’s Basketball schedule announced

With only four returning scholarship letterwinners on his roster for this season, Coach Scott Sanderson has utilized every opportunity in the 2011-12 men’s basketball schedule to get his young team ready for the postseason. In a normal season, the Bisons would play 29 games plus an exhibition. This season however, Lipscomb uses two separate NCAA exemptions to boost this number to 30 games behind an exhibition and a five-game foreign tour for a total of 36 contests. After opening the season with home games against Fort Valley State University (Nov. 11) and Gardner-Webb (Nov. 13), Lipscomb will participate in the Cancun Shootout, a four-game exempt tournament that only counts as three games towards schedule limits. The Cancun Shootout actually starts in the United States and not Mexico with the Bisons traveling to Illinois (Nov. 17) and Illinois State (Nov. 19). Lipscomb will then fly from Chicago to Cancun to play two games in the “Mayan Division” against SIU Edwardsville (Nov. 22) and either Hampton or Sacred Heart the following day. Lipscomb opens a four-game home stand with Austin Peay on Monday, Nov. 28. Lipscomb defeated Austin Peay twice last season restarting an old rivalry between two teams an hour apart that hadn’t played each other for nearly half a century. The Bisons open conference action against Mercer (Dec. 1) and Kennesaw State (Dec. 3) before hosting UT Martin (Dec. 6) in a final home game before spending the next six weeks on the road. Lipscomb plays their third and fourth Ohio Valley Conference opponent in a three-week period when traveling to Tennessee Tech (Dec. 10) and Murray State (Dec....

Freshman tennis players Strecker and Salazar earn honors

Freshman Oliver Strecker was named to the Atlantic Sun All-Conference First Team on Tuesday. The second semester transfer from Auburn University is the first Bison to ever receive first-team honors. Freshman David Salazar also received honors, earning a spot on the A-Sun’s All-Freshman team. Head coach Andrew Harris said both players were well deserving of their honors. “Both Oliver Strecker and David Salazar deserve a tremendous amount of credit this year,” Harris said. “They were both put in difficult situations as freshmen but, obviously, have shown great strength competing in one of the strongest tennis conferences in the country.” Strecker, who is originally from Gemmingen, Germany, finished the season 11-6 overall, 5-5 in the A-Sun, spending the entire season at the No. 1 spot. “Oliver has been playing No. 1 singles since the beginning of the spring,” Harris said. “He transferred here from Auburn, which has been helpful for him this year, because he has seen the competition at this level and understands what it takes to be successful. “We are looking for even stronger things from him next season stepping more into a leadership role. This summer and next fall will be critical for his development.” Spending time at both No. 2 and No. 3, Salazar posted a 9-8 overall record and finished 6-4 in the A-Sun. “Salazar has been playing primarily between No. 2 and No. 3 singles this spring and has been a great warrior on the court,” Harris said. “Everyone I talk to says they enjoy watching Salazar compete and the way he fights for every point. He is a true grinder in the tennis...

Tennis begins post-season quest against Campbell’s Camels

The Bisons are in DeLand, Fla., as the No. 6 seed in the 2011 Atlantic Sun Men’s Tennis Championships, where they were set to face No. 3 seed Campbell University in today’s first-round action. The trip marks the first time in school history the Bisons (7-10 overall, 4-6 A-Sun) have earned a top-6 seed in the conference tournament. The Bisons are looking to post their first post-season victory. The Bisons last saw their first-round opponent on April 2, when they fell to the Camels 6-1. Head coach Andrew Harris said the Bisons will need to start out strong in doubles to get out of the first round. “Anytime you are in a conference championship like this, the doubles point is extremely critical,” Harris said. “Once the singles matches are completed, they stop all remaining matches.” Harris said the Bisons also need to vamp up their singles play as well as their mindset. “Honestly, we have not played at the level in singles the last few matches that we have become accustomed to seeing in the spring,” Harris said. “The guys understand that they don’t have to play unbelievably to win, but they understand they need to compete at a higher level to have success (today). “These guys have been working hard all year long, and they will give themselves the best opportunity possible to be successful.” Campbell finished the regular season 16-4 overall and 7-3 in the A-Sun. The Camels also boast the A-Sun’s player of the year, Senior Davy Sum, who unanimously won the title. Freshman Fernando Guillen also earned the honor of freshman of the year, while Dominik...

Bisons fall to Tennessee 7-3

An hour and a half rain delay hindered the Bisons and Vols’ start time, but fans didn’t shy away. The Vols came into the game 16-4 while the Bisons were 7-13. Chris Nunn got the call for the Bisons and had a solid first inning. However, in the top of the second Tyler Horne got the Vols rolling with a two-run homerun deep over the left center field wall. The Bisons stormed back in the bottom of the second and the third. Josh Chism singled to right field followed by a Tennyson Dodd double. Logan Hostettler’s sacrifice fly scored Chism to bring the score to 2-1 Vols. In the bottom of the third M.L. Williams’ grounder scored T.J. Hoelzer to tie it up 2-2. The Vols got the bats rolling and in a three-inning stretch never looked back. In the top of the fifth a double by Ethan Bennett scored Matt Duffy to put the Vols up 3-2. A Davis Morgan single then scored Bennett to make the score 4-2. Khayyan Norfork then scored Morgan to extend the Vols lead to 5-2. In the top of the sixth Josh Liles then extended the Vols lead to 6-2 when he doubled and brought home Duffy. Morgan continued his good play and singled in the top of the seventh and was sent home by Norfolk two batters later to put the Vols up 7-2. The Bisons threatened but could not capitalize. The Bisons scored the game’s last run in the bottom of the seventh when Hostettler scored Dodd to bring the Bisons within four runs. However, the Vols pitcher Matt Ramsey...
