NASHVILLE (Feb. 10, 2012) – Senior guard Jordan Burgason has been dismissed from the men’s basketball team for violating team rules, Lipscomb Athletic Director Philip Hutcheson announced today. The violation has also led to his dismissal from the university. “I love Jordan and wish him nothing but the absolute best,” said Hutcheson. “But he broke university rules that he knew he was breaking. We had clearly advised him, and he was aware of the consequences of making a bad decision.” A 6-foot-3 guard from Ames, Iowa, Burgason owns Lipscomb’s NCAA-era record for three-pointers with 282. This season, Burgason averaged 16.4 points and made 71 of 135 three-point shots for a 52.6 percent shooting average, making him third in the nation in this category. He led the Bison in three-point shooting, having made nine three-pointers in games against Iowa State and ETSU this season. Burgason finished with 1,132 career points and ranked No. 35 on Lipscomb’s all-time scoring list. Burgason was named the preseason No. 24 shooter in the nation by CBSSports.com. “I want to thank Lipscomb for the unbelievable opportunity that it has given me,” said Burgason. “The whole university has showed so much grace to me. But despite that, my actions have not shown a respect for the university and its policies, and for that I am sorry. I’ll never forget the memories that I’ve made here. Senior Jordan Burgason drained nine 3-pointers tying his own single-game record and posted a career-high 33 points Saturday afternoon as Lipscomb defeated ETSU 73-65 in Johnson City, Tenn. He also hit nine treys at Iowa State on Dec. 21 setting Lipscomb’s NCAA era record. The Bison (10-10, 5-3 A-Sun) connected on a season high 15 three-pointers against ETSU (10-8, 5-3 A-Sun). In the last eight games, Burgason has hit an unfathomable 4.8 treys a game and is shooting 59.3 percent from beyond the arc. Lipscomb plays at USC Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C., Monday at 6 p.m. central. USC Upstate is coming off a 79-78 win on a last second shot against Belmont Saturday. One of the primary concerns for the Lipscomb Bison this season has been the ability to rebound. The Bison spent the past week of practice placing an emphasis on board work. But Saturday night at Allen Arena the Bison were outrebounded 53-40 in an 84-80 loss in overtime to Atlantic Sun foe Florida Gulf Coast. The Bison slipped to 8-10 overall, 3-3 in the conference. Florida Gulf Coast is 8-9, 4-3 in the A-Sun. It was only the second win for Florida Gulf Coast on the road. Lipscomb coach Scott Sanderson thought that a lack of rebounding hurt the Bison in this game more than any other time this season. In the second half Florida Gulf Coast scored 24 points in the paint, 10 on second chances. “They hurt us on the backboards,” Sanderson said. “They took the shots we wanted them to take, but we just didn’t box out when we were playing a zone defense. It was our emphasis all week and we didn’t do it.” Marvin Williams led the Bison with eight rebounds, a season high. “We are small,” Sanderson said. “We had a hard time keeping them in front of us. That is why we went to the zone.” The Bison trailed 33-29 in the first half. With 9:17 left in the second half the Bison held a 13-point lead at 63-50. Lipscomb lost its first game in over a week to A-Sun foe Mercer Thursday night. Mercer grabbed the lead right after the second half started and held on to win 79-72. Lipscomb head coach Scott Sanderson continues to emphasize to his freshman-loaded squad the necessity to listen and learn. While the Bisons fell 79-72 in their Atlantic Sun Conference opener Thursday against Mercer in Allen Arena, the game will be a teaching opportunity for Sanderson. “I thought Mercer weathered the storm in the first half, but we didn’t weather their storm in the second half,” said Sanderson. Lipscomb was up 30-23 with six minutes to play in the first half and allowed the Bears to tie the game at 34 going into the locker room. Mercer opened the second half with a three and led the rest of the game. They shot 58.3 percent in the second half and 50 percent overall. Lipscomb shot 30.3 percent in the second period and 38.1 percent overall. Turnovers were also an issue for the Bisons. After having 13 or fewer miscues in each of the previous four games, Lipscomb turned the ball over 21 times. “All of our turnovers were pretty much self-induced,” said Sanderson. “We didn’t turn the ball over because of what they did, but because of what we did.” Freshman forward Malcolm Smith posted a career-best 22 points in 14 minutes off the bench. After a huge win over Belmont, the Lipscomb Bisons were ready for another A-Sun match-up. They have won the previous two games and were looking for the third straight win to continue their streak. The Bisons were wanting to improve on three major things for the Stetson game. “Field goal defense, turnovers and rebounds,” Coach Sanderson said. The first half was a back-and-forth scoring match where the Bisons and the Stetson Hatters tied five times and the lead changed six times. Within two minutes Stetson’s head coach called a timout when the score was tied. Head Coach Derek Waugh eventually received a technical foul in the second half for his behavior. For most of the game Coach Waugh looked disheveled. Throughout the game, the Bisons presented good teamwork with passing around the perimeter and in the paint, and started taking control of the game towards the end of the first and went into the locker room on top, 33-to-26. Lipscomb’s Adnan Hodzic came strong in the first half leading with 10 points, whereas the Hatters’ top scorer Luis Jacobo had 5 points. The Hatters’ Ridge Graham normally averages almost 14 points a game but was held to zero for the 1st half and was kept to two for the whole game. “I thought [Brandon Brown and Justin Glenn] did an excellent job and a host of other guys helping double [Graham] up in the low post,” Sanderson said.
