Power Rangers come out on top in ‘Jolly Dodger’ dodgeball tournament

The Power Rangers rarely, if ever, have been defeated by their opposition, and Friday night was no different…kind of. In the annual Lipscomb dodgeball tournament (this year’s theme being the pirate-influenced “Jolly Dodger”), Team “Power Rangers” defeated “Lipscomb Volleyball” in an epic championship held in the Fanning Hall courtyard Friday night. Senior Ben Ashley explained what was going through his head during the final one-on-one showdown. “Honestly, I was just thinking, ‘This is the end, this is it. But after it’s all over, I’m still going to have a blast because we’re all friends’,” Ashley said. Part of the show included the teams’ theme and costumes. Sophomore Cedric Duncan explains how they came up with the idea for Power Rangers. “We had several ideas at first,” Duncan said. “Husband Housewives was the original one, but decided to go with the Power Rangers.” Created with Admarket’s flickrSLiDR. En route to their championship, they beat the defending champions, “Team Belmont.” “Everybody wanted us to beat them, so it felt  great to come out on top,” Duncan added. However, the fun didn’t stop there. Since it was Halloween, students had the chance to win $100 for the best costume. Via crowd vote, the winner was a student dressed as Batman. While the competition was fierce, many teams like the Power Rangers were in the tournament to have fun and entertain the crowd. “We had a plan up until the second round, but we weren’t thinking in terms of championship,” Ashley said. “We just wanted to put on a good show.” Carousel photo and gallery credit: Erin...

Student Activities Board sets up exciting spring semester activities

Ever feel bored in your dorm room wondering what’s going on around campus? Louis Nelms, chair for the Student Activities Board, has all the answers you need to get active this semester. “Student Activities Board is a group of about 12-15 people who are involved of different aspects of campus life,” Nelms said. The group comes together every week and discusses ideas for different events to host for Lipscomb students. Nelms, with one semester already under his belt, said he couldn’t wait to get the spring semester underway. He said that we should be expecting several big events relatively soon. A Super Bowl party, a Home Run Derby and Brickyard Basketball are being planned to kick the semester off in style. If you want to relive your childhood, you’ll want to remember “90’s night.” Nelms said it’s sure to be a blast with Space Jam, Nintendo 64’s and Dunk-a-roos in the game plan. Nelms also recommends for students to stay alert for updates on Singarama. “Singarama is definitely something to look forward to. It will be April 4-6th, and you really shouldn’t miss it,” Nelms said. The theme for this year’s show was announced via email earlier this week. The theme will be Timeless, with Yesterday, Today and Forever as the group performances. Nelms said this year’s show won’t be one to miss. “It’s Singarama’s 50th anniversary, so it’s got to be a big show,” Louis said. Looking for something to do during the cold spring semester days? Nelms says that hot chocolate afternoons will be arriving at Lipscomb (with ‘four square in the Square’ also on the agenda). There are many more...

‘Team Belmont’ wins 8th annual dodgeball tournament

The eighth annual All-American Dodgeball tournament was held on Friday, Nov. 2 in the courtyard of Fanning. Similar to years past, this event brought out many Lipscomb students. To begin the tournament, all dodgeball team captains were called to center court to sign the Declaration of Dodgeball. After that, the games began. Some of the crowd favorites for this year were Pokemon, the Toy Soldiers and the Lumberjacks. Possibly the shortest match of the tournament was between the Pregnant Nuns and the Dominoes. Team Belmont, a team that has fought for the title before, came out victoriously this year taking the towering six and a half foot trophy.  ...

Louis Nelms, new director of student involvement, announces LIM fall events

Although still a student himself, Louis Nelms is taking on the role of director of student involvement in his year of transition to being part of Lipscomb’s staff. Nelms replaces Garner Goode, who is now the director of sales and marketing for Lipscomb Athletics. As part of his new role, Nelms oversees Lipscomb in Motion, which is designed to provide students with opportunities for friendship and fun on campus. “Right now I am in a weird time with transitioning from student to faculty,” Nelms said. “I’m in both worlds at once.” Nelms takes this role in “both worlds” as giving him an edge. “I am younger and can relate well to students,” he said, adding that his goal with LIM is  “building on relationships I already have and starting new ones.” Nelms said he is reformatting LIM to accommodate the spontaneity of students on campus and is hoping to direct students to more activities outside of the classroom. “I want more advertising in a less professional way,” Nelms said after bragging about putting Ninja Turtles in one of his recent emails. Nelms said he wants his emails to feel casual and inviting and, most importantly, like they are coming from a fellow student. As for fun this year, Nelms has some new events he would like to unveil, as well as some past events he intends to resurrect. “I am most excited about dodgeball and about showing The Dark Knight Rises when it is released,” he said. Nelms said one new thing is that LIM will begin hosting college football game days, starting with Alabama versus Michigan this Saturday,...
