The Lipscomb baseball team defeated Tennessee Tech 7-1 on the rainy Tuesday afternoon at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium. The Bisons were down 1-0 early, due to a home run by the Golden Eagles’ designated hitter Ryan Flick. This run by Flick was the only one Tennessee Tech got the entire game. But it didn’t take long for Lipscomb to answer with a run-scoring double by senior Jonathan Allison in the bottom of the third. The tie of 1-1 didn’t break until the bottom of the fifth. Lipscomb freshman Jeffrey Crisan helped break the tie by getting a sacrifice fly to right field. He was not the only freshman to have a good day at the plate. Freshman Michael Gigliotti had three runs and said that getting those runs and RBI’s were all about his mindset. “Bunting to me is religious,” Gigliotti said. “I work on bunting as much as hitting. When you have speed, it is a great tool to get on base and score some runs.” Gigliotti now has six bunt base hits on the season. Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand said that he was proud of Gigliotti’s and the other team member’s contributions, whether it was on the field or at the plate. The Lipscomb baseball team finished the season-opener with a complete sweep against Butler this weekend at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium. Due to Sunday’s weather forecast, the Bisons played a doubleheader on Saturday. In the first game on Friday, Lipscomb struggled to get hits and was down 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning. The Bisons began to rally when sophomore Hunter Hanks got a two-run double. Lipscomb scored an insurance run after hitting a single and piled on three runs in the sixth and seventh innings to win the game 9-3. The Bisons got off to a hot start in the second game, as an error by the Bulldogs’ shortstop led to a three run rally. Lipscomb played small ball, scoring on a sacrifice bunt and hitting three singles in the second inning. Both Lipscomb and Butler’s bullpens blew up, and the score was tied 8-8 in the bottom of the ninth. The bases were loaded as redshirt junior Adam Lee stepped up to the plate. The first pitch thrown by the reliever led to a walk-off, hit-by-pitch for a Bisons win of 9-8. In the final game, Lipscomb started out slowly, scoring one run in the first four innings. The Bulldogs failed to steal home, igniting the Bisons in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Grant Massey started the rally with a run-scoring single. Freshman infielder Hunter Hanks hit a walk-off single to give Lipscomb a 2-1 win over Jacksonville in the Atlantic Sun tournament in Fort Myers, Fla. The Bisons won in the 10th inning. Junior infielder Grant Massey led off the 10th with a single to left field. Junior outfielder Jonathon Allison bunted Massey over to second, followed by a Hanks single through the left side to score Massey. Lipscomb scored one run in the third. Allison tripled to right field. Senior outfielder Drew Adams singled to score Allison to give the Bisons the 1-0 lead. Jacksonville scored their solo run in the ninth. The Lipscomb baseball team ended their season with a three-game home stand against the first place team in the Atlantic Sun, Florida Gulf Coast. With the number one seed in the Atlantic Sun Tournament in sight, the Bisons won their first game against Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday 11-6, keeping their hopes alive for one more day. Junior center fielder Jonathan Allison led Lipscomb with three hits in the game. Junior left fielder Josh Lee was one of many Bisons with two hits during the explosive offensive outing. Due to expected inclement weather on Saturday, the Bisons and Eagles played a doubleheader on Friday. Needing to win twice to have a shot at first place in the conference, Lipscomb split the games, dropping the first game 3-2 and winning the second match-up 7-1 to take the series. Junior shortstop Grant Massey led the Bisons in the first outing by batting 2 for 4, while junior designated hitter Griffin Moore paced Lipscomb by going 3 for 4 and belting a home run in the second game. The two victories helped to solidify the Bisons’ fourth place finish for the season in the Atlantic Sun, a position which matches them up against fifth place Jacksonville (13-13 conference record, 20-31 overall record) in the opening game of the A-Sun Tournament. Lipscomb defeated Jacksonville at Dugan Field in two out of the three games that they played in March. The Lipscomb Bisons completed a three game sweep of the East Tennessee State Buccaneers over the weekend. In game one the Bisons’ bats came alive pounding out sixteen hits. “When the hits start to spread from hitter to hitter, one guy feeds off the other. Good things happen,” head coach Jeff Forehand said. The offensive attack for the Bisons was lead by a 5-for-5 night at the plate by junior left fielder Josh Lee and a 3-for-4 game by junior center fielder Jonathan Allison. Allison hit a home run over the left field wall to give the Bisons an early 1-0 and later recorded a base-clearing triple that brought home two more runs. Allison finished the game with three RBI’s. ETSU did not go down easy. They responded to the 5-0 lead by adding two runs of their own to trim the margin to three. In the 7th inning ETSU closed the gap even more by adding five more runs, but the Bisons were able to hang on for the 9-7 win. In game two of the series, ETSU ran into a pitcher on a mission. Hunter Brothers pitched his first career complete game shut out. “When you get that performance that is all you need. He dominated from start to finish,” Forehand said.
