Lipscomb women’s soccer defeated Chattanooga 3-0 Friday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. With this game, the Lady Bisons have played six straight games without giving up a goal against opponents. “I am impressed with the way this team has jelled,” head coach Kevin O’Brien said. “Hopefully they will continue to improve.” Freshman Brooke Brenner scored the only goal for the Bisons in the first half of the 13th minute. The goal was assisted by sophomore Elizabeth Ashwood, who played the ball across the Chattanooga backline. UTC’s Katie Emig made several stops, but Lipscomb continued to aggressively pound the net in the second half. In the 64th minute, senior Caroline Chadwell scored the second goal of the game and was assisted by freshman Maycie McKay. Freshman Lindsay Brent scored the third goal of the game in the 77th minute. Sophomore Emily Rogers assisted the goal. O’Brien said he was very happy with the balance of veteran and young players contributing to the game. “This makes our entire program more competitive,” O’Brien said. “It shows that our players genuinely care about each other and they have a great spirit, which makes it an awesome group to coach.” Lipscomb women’s soccer will take on Vanderbilt at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Student athletes traded their uniforms for formal wear for the second annual Lippy Awards Wednesday evening in Allen Arena. The Lippys honor athletes, coaches and others who contribute in various ways to Lipscomb sports teams. Before the show, guests enjoyed live music from Marquee Mayfield and showed off their formal wear at photo booths. The show was hosted by soccer coach Chris Klotz and cross county coach Marcus Evans. To begin, the James R. Byers Award was presented to senior field thrower April Terry and senior baseball player Josh Lee. It is the highest award given to student-athletes. Terry quoted the Mary Mary song “God in Me” in her acceptance speech, saying, “I hope that you see that I’m really not that outstanding, but all of the accolades, the records, the titles – it’s all God working.” Lee, who made his way from Vandy to Central Arizona College and finally landed at Lipscomb, said that he’s blessed for the opportunities at Lipscomb. “This is a great accomplishment, but the one thing I’ll remember is all the relationships I’ve built with my teammates,” Lee said. Golfer Dawson Armstrong and cross country runner Paige Stoner took home the male and female Freshman of the Year awards. Senior soccer player Luke Gearin won International Player of the Year. Women’s soccer coach Kevin O’Brien received the Don Meyer Head Coach of the Year for his inspiration to the athletic program. “I think I have the best job in the world,” O’Brien said. “I’m so thankful to get to work with the girls I work with every day.” Luke Syverson, who coaches track and field, was...

The Lady Bisons soccer team just completed a record-breaking regular season, and look to take the season even further this weekend. The team finished regular season play Friday Oct. 24 against Northern Kentucky. The game ended in a 2-0 loss, but the team finished with a 10-6-2 overall record, and the no. 2 spot going into the conference tournament. This 2014 season is the first season the Lipscomb women’s team has had a winning record. The Lady Bisons have also only made it into the tournament one other year, and that was last year. A change in coaching staff back in the spring of 2012 is a huge part of the program’s turnaround. Junior Emily Shuler was recruited to Lipscomb before the coaching change, and said she would have looked elsewhere had she been aware of the programs record, but she is thrilled with the change. “When I looked at Lipscomb’s website for them to come watch [me play], I remember their record was like, two wins, maybe. I was like, what am I doing, like why did I ask them to come, and it ended up being awesome,” Shuler said. “Now we’re at a place where we’ve got five times that for wins if not more.” Senior Karli Crosby played on the team before head coach Kevin O’Brien was hired, and she has seen first hand how much of a difference he has made. “We’ve gotten better every single year ever since OB (O’Brien) got here.
