The latest episode of Tokens, a theological variety show created by Lipscomb’s Dr. Lee Camp, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22 at the Downtown Presbyterian Church. Lipscomb SGA announced Monday that it would sell tickets for a discounted price of $5. The show, “Singing Down the Pain: The Civil War,” includes special guests Odessa Settles, The Whites, Buddy Greene, a combined male chorus from The Nashville Choir and The Greater Nashville Community Gospel Choir, along with the Most Outstanding Horeb Mountain Boys comprising celebrated Nashville musicians Jeff Taylor, Aubrey Haynie, Pete Huttlinger, Byron House and Chris Brown. Kenneth Coca, a senior biochemistry major and cello performance minor, performed in last year’s show and is a musician again this year. “I’m not one of the big wigs,” Coca said. “I’m just doing this for my own fun and to help out a good cause.” Coca is playing cello in a quartet Thursday night with Joel Campbell, a junior music major, and two students from Belmont. He said he thinks Tokens is a good way to share the gospel message in a non-church setting. “I really believe in the message,” he said. “They’re spreading the gospel of Christ through music. I think that’s something that a community needs.” Thursday’s production serves as a commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the U.S. Civil War and will feature themes from that era including “the longing for justice and peace, the slaves’ longing for freedom and the triumph over the auction block and the parents’ grief that their sons will no longer return from war.” The show will take place at Downtown Presbyterian...

As part of Lipscomb University’s Summer Celebration, many speakers were on Lipscomb’s campus this past week speaking on a variety of spiritual topics. Thursday morning, Hillsboro Church of Christ minister Daniel Hope spoke on the topic of forgiveness. Hope’s lesson began by mentioning a number of highly-publicized tragedies, and how those involved displayed great forgiveness after enduring very traumatizing events. He mentioned the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II, and described the Pope’s forgiveness of the shooter just days after leaving the hospital. Hope also mentioned a deadly shooting within an Amish community in 2006, and how the community came together to setup a fund for the gunmen’s children. An act which provided a great deal of healing for the shooter’s devastated family. These acts of forgiveness are often times not displayed on a large-scale by Christians, but Hope reminded the audience that Jesus himself told Paul to forgive a transgressor 77 times before giving up on another. Hope’s lesson was one which dove into a number of questions relating to forgiveness which Christians can often struggle with. He tackled tough questions and provided a response that forgiveness is not about forgetting an act or the absence of hurt, but rather it is about forgiving an unpayable debt. “Forgiveness is a decision and journey,” Hope said. “It is a commitment to the process of ceasing to demand restitution.” Part of this decision and journey is that one must work to get to a point where they can get over bitterness. “One cannot take sin more lightly than God, because sin is a big deal, and we must not...

WeCar offers an environmentally friendly solution for Lipscomb students who don’t have access to a car but who need to get off campus. Most student needs can be met right on campus, but there are times –whether it is picking up a prescription, running simple errands or visiting friends and family — when a student needs to venture away from Lipscomb. Riding with friends can be the solution, but it can also make the car-less student feel like something of aburden to friends serving as taxi drivers. Now a solution is parked within eyesight. Lipscomb University has paired with the WeCar program to provide a solution to this popular problem. WeCar’s aphorism is “Our car, Your car, WeCar.” This company, which is a car-sharing program from Enterprise Rent-A-Car, provides a transportation solution that is convenient and cost-effective. The vehicles are available all hours of the day and night and are usually well-located and easily accessible. WeCar is available to rent for an hour, a day or overnight. Another benefit of the WeCar program is it is environmentally friendly. Offering mostly fuel-efficient, hybrid, and plug-in vehicles decreases pollution. When people participate in car-sharing programs like this, it cuts down on traffic congestion, fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. Men’s soccer swept, women’s soccer finished their home portion of the season and the volleyball team is still dominating the Atlantic Sun conference. Oh, and softball in October? It was all a part of this weekend in Lipscomb sports. The Lady Bisons softball team went 4-0 this weekend, beating Chipola twice, Milligan once and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville once. Junior Whitney Kiihnl pitched a complete game against Tennessee. Kiihnl allowed one walked batter in the first, but did not allow another base runner until the seventh-inning when a UT player reached on a bunt single. Freshman Haley Elliot homered for the Lady Bisons, giving them their only run against the Lady Vols. The Bison soccer team swept this weekend on their Florida road trip, beating Jacksonville and North Florida. Miguel DaSilva and Garrett McLaughlin,scored two goals each on the weekend. Tyler Burkhardt, Garret McLaughlin, and Andrew Chamberlain also scored for the Bisons. Lipsomb’s record is now even at 2-2-0 in the Atlantic Sun and 6-6-0 overall. The Lady Bisons Soccer team closed out the home portion of the season this weekend. But the team was also handed two losses courtesy of Jacksonville and North Florida. Danielle Bethke scored the long goal for the Lipscomb on the weekend. The Lady Bisons played Jacksonville tough on Sunday, but all three goals came from set pieces. Two came from a corner kick, the other from a penalty kick. Volleyball improved to 15-5 and 4-0 in the Atlantic Sun this weekend. The Lady Bisons defeated ETSU and USC Upstate this weekend.
