I think it’s safe to say the day of the video store has sadly come to an end. While I always enjoyed looking around a Blockbuster from time to time, I must admit the convenience of a Redbox is a nice luxury to have, especially as a college student. The one-dollar a night rental service hosts many new releases every week, and on occasion, will bring back an older movie for good measure. Redbox machines are located all over the Middle Tennessee area. As long as you don’t forget to turn your movie back the next day, Redbox is a wonderful, inexpensive way to find enjoyment during the down-time of college. But don’t you just hate it when you Redbox a movie that really isn’t to your liking? It may be just a dollar wasted, but these days, a dollar wasted is exactly that. I’ve decided to contribute a weekly REDBOX REPORT that highlights one or two new releases that gain the full approval of my cinematic taste. And trust me, I have good taste. So before you make a trip to the Redbox this week, check out these recommendations. RIO (G, 96 minutes-featuring the voice cast of Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, Leslie Mann, and George Lopez) I don’t know about you, but I love a good animated movie now and then. I immediately found Rio to be extremely worthy of my time back when I saw it in late April. The film has a light, breezy feel that flows throughout the runtime. The animation is beautiful, especially in Rio de Janeiro, the voice cast is great, and the...

Lipscomb’s athletic director, Phillip Hutcheson, announced this morning on 102.5 The Game that all of Lipscomb’s basketball games will be broadcasted this year on the station. “We’ve been looking for a partner for a while now,” Hutcheson said. “Two-thirds of Lipscomb alumni live within this listening area.” Formerly known as 1025 The Party, The Game is now the flagship station for the Nashville Predators and ESPN radio. “Ten of our thirteen guys are from the listening area,” Hutcheson said. “We’re thrilled to be on the air.” Long time play-by-play man Jonathon Seamon will be calling the games, just like always. He’ll have a new color guy, though, since his son, Benjamin, just graduated. Lipscomb is partnering the Jackson Family of companies that will be the presenting sponsor. We’ll have more, later....

This evenings much anticipated match against Western Kentucky went down to a final call in the third set before the Lady Bisons lost 3-0.During the first set the Lady Bisons had trouble blocking Western Kentucky’s kills, and didn’t seem to have an answer for them otherwise. After falling behind early the Lady Bisons lost 14-25 in the first set. The score of the second set isn’t much different, but the Lady Bisons played with more enthusiasm, keeping the game close before losing 15-25. In the first two sets coach Brandon Rosenthal had Abby Fay, a red shirt senior, at libero; in the third set he moved freshman Megan Stout into libero in order to let Fay help current A-Sun player of the week, Katie Rose and senior Char Ursell on the frontline. The Lady Bisons went into the third set with clear heads that helped them get a 10-5 lead midway through the set. After Western Kentucky tied it up at 12-12 the Lady Bisons were unable to recover and lost the set 20-25 on a call where it was uncertain whether or not the ball was tipped out of bounds. The Lady Bisons will be traveling to Notre Dame this weekend for an Invitational before returning to Allen Arena next Wednesday at 6:30 for a match against Austin...

Who would have guessed that a movie centered in the world of Mixed Martial Arts would be one of the most profound releases of the year? I sure didn’t. When I first saw the trailer for Warrior, I thought the film looked like a clichéd drama with the backdrop of a sport I’ve never been too big on. I liked the cast and the director, but sadly, I wrote the movie off as a typical low-brow September release (a film that is stuck in the doldrums of September released by a studio for a quick buck). Sometimes, I love it when I’m wrong. Warrior is a knockout. The cast, the score, the direction, the screenplay, and even the cinematography- everything packs its own unique punch that will have a lasting effect long after the theater lights have gone up. The film follows two brothers, Tommy (Tom Hardy) and Brendan (Joel Edgerton). Tommy is a beast of a human being. A veteran from the War on Terror and a former wrestling champion in his youth, Tommy has no emotion. He is a somber, relentless man – which shows evidently through his fighting – of few words. On the other side of the spectrum, Brendan is a beloved physics teacher with a wife and two kids. A former fighter himself, he gave up his days in the UFC for the life of a typical husband/ father. The two, who have not been on speaking terms for years after a rift in the family was created by their alcoholic father (Nick Nolte), collide when a new MMA tournament with a large prize...

One thing is clear about the Lady Bisons volleyball team: they won’t go down without a fight. The Lady Bisons lost their last match in the inaugural Lipscomb Invitational to Arkansas State in four close sets Saturday afternoon. In the first set, the Lady Bisons couldn’t seem to find their rhythm, losing 15-25, and then fell just short in the second, losing 24-26. During the third set, the Lady Bisons used the energy from their home crowd to win 25-16. “I think they feed off of the energy, so it’s good to be at home,” said Lady Bisons Coach Brandon Rosenthal. The Lady Bisons were able to get ahead a little in the fourth set but fell short 23-25, losing the match 2-1. “The girls have been working hard,” said Rosenthal. “We’ve come up short just a little, but I think it’ll help tremendously.” The Lady Bisons will take on Western Kentucky this Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 6:30 p.m. in Allen...
