Immigration will be the topic of discussion when Gov. Bill Haslam addresses The Tennessee Latin American Chamber of Commerce (TLACC) on Wednesday, March 6, as part of Tennessee’s Partnership for a New American Economy. That partnership is designed to bring together leaders from all political and economic sectors nationwide to raise awareness of what it sees as the economic benefits of sensible immigration reform. Immigration reform is — along with education and gun laws — one of the most discussed topics from both sides of the political aisle. And Haslam has weighed in on the subject before. In a recent interview with POLITICO’s Jonathan Martin, Haslam addressed a variety of topics, including the debate over immigration reform. He said he would like to see a comprehensive immigration reform bill enacted. The event will take place in Ezell 301 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost to attend is $35 for non-TLACC...

Expansion, more locations and even a church plant loom in the future for The Well Coffeehouse, which, for eight months, has provided a place for people to enjoy good coffee. Originally founded by Lipscomb professor Rob Touchstone and Chris Soper, The Well — located at 2025 Richard Jones Road in Green Hills — is a nonprofit ministry designed to share love and nurture the feeling of community in Nashville. With outreach efforts ranging from The Wishing Well (a wall in the coffeehouse where people can pin notes expressing specific needs in hopes that someone will read it and be able to help) to an effort that helps fund fresh water wells in Africa, The Well Coffeehouse has provided opportunities for Lipscomb students to get involved with local ministries and nonprofit organizations. “All Lipscomb students can take advantage of partnering with all the nonprofits that we work with right now,” Soper said. “There are five or six different nonprofits we can get you involved with.” The Well has continued to grow through the help of Lipscomb students and the Nashville community. Change seems to quickly be approaching this ministry. “We do have a lot of plans for The Well for the future,” Soper said. “There are a lot of things that we are working on and working towards.” Soon, it may become a place to worship, too. “Yes, there are plans in place to do a church plant in The Well and grow the church through The Well,” Soper said. Besides just planting a church, expansion and even possible relocation have been hinted at by The Well’s leaders. “It is...

February 17-23 is Severe Weather Awareness week in Tennessee. The National Weather Service in Memphis has been participating in the week-long focus by offering different topics to be discussed each day. Their efforts hope to help educate people about severe weather and the importance of safety in a storm. Kelton Halbert, a dual-enrollment student at Lipscomb, hopes to study about severe weather after he graduates from high school. After seeing an EF-4 tornado rip through Murfreesboro, Tenn., in 2009, he became interested in everything that went into a severe weather forecast. Providing different atmospheric analyses for storms that come through the Middle Tennessee area, Halbert is constantly monitoring the weather. He accomplishes this through his blog, Tempest Chasing, and his twitter account, @TempestChasing. After he graduates, Halbert plans on attending the University of Oklahoma to study...

Lipscomb students were thrilled when it was announced in January that the famed Swedish retailer H&M is planning to open a location in Nashville at the Opry Mills mall. H&M, a european mega-brand, is a favorite among fashionistas and draws a lot of crowds with its trendy clothing for men, women and children. The company increased its footprint in the world of fashion by regularly partnering with iconic fashion brands such as Marni and Versace and offering versions of their clothing at an affordable price. According to the chain’s website, the Opry Mills location will be the first H&M store in Tennessee and is set to open in June or July of this year. Students have been waiting for an H&M to come to Nashville for a long time and were very excited when they heard the news. Senior Kathryn McKinley expressed her excitement on having a new store that is high on trends and low on budget. “I can’t wait for H&M to be here! They have so many selections on a college student budget,” McKinley said. Senior Katie Underwood said she’s excited that Nashville is becoming so prevalent and present in the fashion industry. “Nashville is growing as an iconic fashion city, and adding an H&M will bring so much more option and affordable personality to this city,” Underwood said. “Living on a college budget, I couldn’t be any more excited for the newest addition to Opry Mills!” For information on H&M and its Nashville location...

Every year, more than 20 teams, comprised of about 175 players, take the courts looking to take home the intramural championship. Nick Marsden, a junior biology major, is one of the star players and is known for his air time. “It’s exciting to go out and compete with your classmates,” said the leaping Marsden. While most teams are playing for the championship, there are some that play just to have fun. Tyler Bivens, a junior communication major, plays on one of these teams. Bivens, an outside shooter for the High Rollers, plays for the camaraderie. “It’s a lot of fun getting out on the court playing with my friends,” Bivens said. “And it’s a good distraction from the rigorous studies of college life.” Regardless of competition level, players agree that the game is the thing that ties them together. “Just being out on the court and playing is really the best part,” Marsden said. “Basketball is such a fun sport, and it doesn’t really matter how good you are,” said Bivens. To get started in finding out about the intramural programs,...
