Lipscomb’s Student Activities Board has been working hard this summer to create a full slate of events to entertain students during the fall semester, including some usual suspects and a concert with a noted local musician. Thanks to the partnership with SAB, SGA, Campus Ministry and Lipscomb Athletics, there is some sort of activities planned every day of the week throughout the fall. If you take a look at the schedule, you’ll recognize some of the main attractions that come up every year: the Dodgeball Tournament, Paint the Herd, and the Running of the Bison. In addition to the normal events, SAB added more events with the help of their on campus partnerships. SGA President Andrew Hunt has been working alongside SAB to create more events every week on campus. “Besides some new events, the only major difference for this semester is that we’re working a lot more closely with SAB,” Hunt said. “We hope that splitting the cost of events will help both of our budgets go further, so we will be able to have more, higher-quality events.” Local musician Dave Barnes will kick off Homecoming Week in concert on Oct.1 at 7 p.m. in Collins Alumni Auditorium. Ever feel bored in your dorm room wondering what’s going on around campus? Louis Nelms, chair for the Student Activities Board, has all the answers you need to get active this semester. “Student Activities Board is a group of about 12-15 people who are involved of different aspects of campus life,” Nelms said. The group comes together every week and discusses ideas for different events to host for Lipscomb students. Nelms, with one semester already under his belt, said he couldn’t wait to get the spring semester underway. He said that we should be expecting several big events relatively soon. A Super Bowl party, a Home Run Derby and Brickyard Basketball are being planned to kick the semester off in style. If you want to relive your childhood, you’ll want to remember “90’s night.” Nelms said it’s sure to be a blast with Space Jam, Nintendo 64’s and Dunk-a-roos in the game plan. Nelms also recommends for students to stay alert for updates on Singarama. “Singarama is definitely something to look forward to. It will be April 4-6th, and you really shouldn’t miss it,” Nelms said. The theme for this year’s show was announced via email earlier this week. The theme will be Timeless, with Yesterday, Today and Forever as the group performances. Nelms said this year’s show won’t be one to miss. “It’s Singarama’s 50th anniversary, so it’s got to be a big show,” Louis said. Looking for something to do during the cold spring semester days? Coaches, players, cheerleaders, fans – it’s time for Battle of the Boulevard. Nov. 9 marks the 131st rivalry game between the Lipscomb Bisons and Belmont Bruins men’s basketball teams. The game takes place Friday night in Allen Arena at 6:30 p.m. There’s a lot of history between the two schools, dating back to Dec. 11, 1953 – the first time the schools faced off. However, it wasn’t until the 1980s that an actual rivalry was born with coaches Don Meyer (Lipscomb) and Rick Byrd (Belmont). Lipscomb currently leads Belmont 73-57 in the series. Louis Nelms, the director of student involvement, has been to eight “battles” so far. “My favorite part of the Battle of the Boulevard would be the environment,” Nelms said. “As a small school, our athletic teams often don’t get the kind of support or attention that other schools that are maybe in bigger conferences do. The Battle of the Boulevard is one of the few experiences where Lipscomb gets to feel a little bit different than usual.” Nelms said that while this specific game may not be as big of an event as other collegiate sporting rivalries, the Battle of the Boulevard still deserves national attention. “We are playing a team that is consistently getting national attention, and it is fun to have a real rival,” Nelms said. “It’s not Duke vs. UNC or Alabama vs. Auburn, but it is one of the best sporting events in the country because it is one of those games where the records are thrown out and anyone can win.” How deep is the rivalry now compared to years before? Students paired up and dressed alike on Thursday for “twin day,” the final Bison Week theme before students deck themselves in purple and gold for Battle of the Boulevard. Rena’ Cothron, a junior softball player, dressed as a Dr. Seuss character for twin day. “I really like the idea of Bison Week because it gets people into the athletic aspect of LU,” she said. “I feel like it is not as big of a deal here to cheer on our teams, but we need the support!” Bree Thurman and Jordan Abell partnered with each other for the dress-up theme. “Twin day is may favorite of the days. I am loving bison spirit week!” Abell said. “It’s nice to see people dressing up and getting in the spirit for the game on Friday,” Thurman said. “I hope all the hype for sports rolls over into all of the other sports, too.” Two students, Olivia Stastny and Keiana Hastings, used the basketball team for their twin inspiration. “We are supposed to be the Smith twins on the basketball team,” Hastings said, explaining their wardrobe choice. Clothing from past decades resurfaced Wednesday on campus as students participated in “retro day,” the third theme day of Bison Week. Freshman Lola Sobowale joined the retro fun. “This is my favorite day of the Bison spirit week,” she said, adding a call to action for Lipscomb’s men’s basketball team. “They better win!” Nerds roamed Lipscomb’s campus Monday as students participated in the first dress-up theme for Bison Week: nerd day. Although still a student himself, Louis Nelms is taking on the role of director of student involvement in his year of transition to being part of Lipscomb’s staff. Nelms replaces Garner Goode, who is now the director of sales and marketing for Lipscomb Athletics. As part of his new role, Nelms oversees Lipscomb in Motion, which is designed to provide students with opportunities for friendship and fun on campus. “Right now I am in a weird time with transitioning from student to faculty,” Nelms said. “I’m in both worlds at once.” Nelms takes this role in “both worlds” as giving him an edge. “I am younger and can relate well to students,” he said, adding that his goal with LIM is “building on relationships I already have and starting new ones.” Nelms said he is reformatting LIM to accommodate the spontaneity of students on campus and is hoping to direct students to more activities outside of the classroom. “I want more advertising in a less professional way,” Nelms said after bragging about putting Ninja Turtles in one of his recent emails. Nelms said he wants his emails to feel casual and inviting and, most importantly, like they are coming from a fellow student. As for fun this year, Nelms has some new events he would like to unveil, as well as some past events he intends to resurrect. “I am most excited about dodgeball and about showing The Dark Knight Rises when it is released,” he said.
