During Saturday’s meet, there was a 30 degrees difference in temperature from the Bisons’ last race at Vaughn’s Gap, the Belmont Opener. Two weeks ago, the men’s and women’s cross country teams were running out of clothing items to remove in the sweltering heat. Two weeks later at the Vanderbilt Classic, they were struggling to find enough to put on. At around 60 degrees, the brisk, overcast morning lengthened their warm-up some, but overall the temperature was welcomed by the participating athletes and fans alike. With nearly double the attendance from the Belmont Opener, Vaughn’s Gap was electric. “We’re thrilled with our women’s performance today. We finished 4th overall without our top three women out there, so, great performances,” head coach Bill Taylor said. Despite withholding Sally Larson, Danielle Walker and Madi Talbert from the competition the Lady Bisons showed that they still have a lot to bring to the table. The trio of runers will compete in Boston in two weeks and coach Taylor is hoping the girls will make a statement. “Maybe not visible to everybody because of not running our top three, but we’re really happy and we feel like it’s setting us up awesomely for the end of the season,” Taylor said. Lipscomb sophomore Barbara Ball finished with a time of 17:43.54. Ball, who is the current Atlantic Sun Runner of the Week, stepped up for the Lady Bisons in her teammates’ absence. “Today was great. The summer of 2014 has reached the halfway mark, and Nashville has had its full share of sports news in May and June. Here is a recap on what you may have missed. Lipscomb Baseball: Former Lipscomb baseball stars Rex Brothers and Caleb Joseph have been performing well in the MLB. Joseph, who was called up to the majors on May 7, hit his first home run on June 22 against the New York Yankees. After coming very close to making the MLB All Star team last summer, on June 14 Brothers became the first pitcher in Colorado Rockies history to pitch an “immaculate inning,” which means he struck out three batters on only nine pitches in the inning. Rex’s younger brother Hunter was drafted by his brother’s team, the Rockies, in the 30th round of the 2014 MLB draft. Brothers is currently pitching for the Grand Junction Rockies of the Pioneer League. Former Bisons Chris Nunn and Josh Smith are also currently playing in the Minor Leagues. Nunn is pitching for the Lake Elsinore Storm of the California League, while Josh Smith is suiting up for the Louisville Bats of the International League. Lipscomb Track and Field: The Lipscomb track and field team continued their run of success from the fall semester into the spring and concluded their triumphant run through the summer thanks to appearances at the NCAA Nationals by Gemikal Prude and Madi Talbert, as well as participation in the NCAA East Preliminaries by Prude, Talbert and Colin Dempster. Madi Talbert and Gemikal Prude took their talents to Eugene, Oregon, to compete in the NCAA Nationals for track and field. Talbert hit the track on Wednesday in the 3000-meter steeplechase. She finished with a time of 10:13.70, placing her seventh in her heat. Talbert was also named a Second Team All-American. Despite the success, Talbert’s time was not good enough to for the Finals. This was Talbert’s second consecutive appearance at Nationals. She improved on her 2013 time of 10:41.98. Prude, also competing at Nationals for the second straight year, ended his season on Friday attempting to clear a height of 2.05 meters. Despite leaping 2.14 meters in the Eastern Preliminaries, Prude was not able to clear the 2.05 meter bar. Even though Prude did not advance on Friday, he was named an honorable mention All-American. The Lipscomb track and field team continued an excellent season this past week with three Bisons competing at the NCAA East Preliminaries. Junior Gemikal Prude and sophomores Colin Dempster and Madi Talbert traveled to Jacksonville for a chance to earn a spot in the NCAA Outdoor Finals. On Thursday, junior Colin Dempster set a new school record in the 400 meters with a time of 47.23 seconds. Dempster broke his own school record of 47.29 which he set during the Atlantic Sun Championships. Although he broke the school record, Dempster did not qualify for the NCAA Finals. Friday saw Talbert finish fourth in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:08.21, good enough to send her to her second straight NCAA Outdoor Finals. Her time set a new school record as well. Prude, no stranger to national competition, became the second Bison to qualify for the Outdoor Finals on Saturday with an eighth place finish in the high jump thanks to a 2.14 mark. The spring semester may have ended two weeks ago for most students, but for spring athletics things have now just started to wrap up. For anyone that is a Bison fan, what an amazing spring it has been for all the athletes. The Lipscomb track and field team completed their Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championships in Jacksonville, Florida, May 16 and 17th. Much like the whole year, many Bisons found success. Madi Talbert received first place in the 3000-meter race. Talbert finished with a time of 10:28.76 making her the record holder in the A-Sun outdoor 3000 meter, but it did not stop there for Talbert as she finished with the gold in the 5000 meters. Freshman Sally Larson also received first place in her 10,000 meter event. April Terry was covered in bronze as she threw the shot put 13.10 meters and the hammer throw with a distance of 50.29 meters, both for third place finishes. “I didn’t feel ready the week before the meet. I prayed and meditated, asking God to help me with my attitude,” April Terry said. “In the hammer, I fouled my first two throws and threw a short throw to get into the finals. The same happened in shot. I had to trust that God was going to work it out and believe that I could do it.” “This meet taught me about trusting God and about prayer,” Terry said. “When I look at the two metals that I won, I just have to give thanks to God.” Also, receiving third place was Kevin Floyd who cleared 4.63 meters in the pole vault.
