Teachers are a special kind of people. We depend on them to teach our children how to do things that they will use through the rest of their lives. Christina Bartelt is a senior who represents what the College of Education at Lipscomb is about. When it comes to younger education majors, Bartelt wants to emphasize that you need to love the people you work with, young or old. Set to graduate in May, Bartelt says she is looking to the near future with optimism. Though she is stressed about graduating and finding a job, the graduating senior said she trusts that God has a plan for her. Relay for Life began in 1985 in Tacoma, Washington. 27 years later, on Friday, Feb. 1, Lipscomb hosted their first Relay for Life event in Allen Arena. Though it was chilly outside, the inside of Allen Arena couldn’t have felt warmer. Everyone was buzzing around the arena and sharing their stories of why they participated in the event. Everyone in attendance had been affected by cancer in some way, whether it be through personal experience or knowing a family member or friend with the disease. From seven at night until seven in the morning, hundreds of people walked to show support for their loved ones. All through the night, there were booths full of games and food. The floor of the arena had Zumba dancing sessions with hundreds of people. There was a mechanical bull, ping-pong competitions and basketball and volleyball games that carried on throughout the night. The musical entertainment, games and activities were a great way to keep everyone going and feeling good until the sun began to rise. Money raised from Relay for Life goes to the American Cancer Society. The American Cancer Society puts the donations from Relay For Life to work, investing in research for many different types of cancer. The 47th Super Bowl will kick off on February 3rd at 6:30 p.m. Eastern time. This year’s game features the SanFransico 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens. The San Francisco 49ers have gained the reputation of being ‘the comeback kid’ after defeating the Atlanta Falcons despite at one time being down 17 points. San Fransico started off the season with quarterback Alex Smith, but made a switch during the season to a name that not many had heard of. Colin Kaepernick played for Nevada in college, and many thought he would become a professional baseball player as opposed to joining the NFL. After he filled in for Alex Smith when he was injured, Kaepernick led the 49ers all the way to the Super Bowl. The Ravens on the other hand have been relying on their defense and steady play of quarterback Joe Flacco to make the playoffs. With this being Ray Lewis’ last season, the team has used the emotion to win games many thought they couldn’t. They beat both Peyton Manning and Tom Brady on the road to reach this year’s Super Bowl. Some think that the Ravens’ defense will be too much for the 49ers, while others are putting all their faith in Kaepernick to win the game.
