After losing a close battle with Murray State Monday night, the men’s basketball team played hard against a, at the time, 3-2 Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, winning 80-64. The Bisons came out strong with a 4-0 run in the first three minutes, but the Golden Eagles kept the game close until Lipscomb gained important momentum, going into the half up by nine. The second half mirrored the first, with a strong finish helping the Bisons close things out. The team evened out their record to 3-3 on the season. Senior Deonte Alexander led the Bisons in scoring with 17, with sophomore Martin Smith adding in 14. Freshmen Stephen Hurt led in rebounds with 10 and junior Khion Sankey led in assists with four. The Bisons also made 80% of their free throws, with sophomore Malcom Smith making seven of eight. Martin Smith believes that tonight’s win helped show the team’s strengths. “It was a big win for us,” Martin Smith said. “This is a team that’s going to compete in the OVC with Murray State and Belmont. It was just a good win, showing what we’re capable of doing as a team.” After this week’s play, Martin Smith hopes that the momentum will carry over into this Tuesday’s second and final installment of the Battle of the Boulevard at Belmont. “This week, we just showed we were capable of playing great defense and that we’ve got our offense down pat.” Photo credit: Whitney...

Beginning with Friday night’s “Battle of the Boulevard” men’s basketball contest, Lipscomb, the Atlantic Sun Conference and ESPN are working together to bring six events live from Allen Arena in November on ESPN3, ESPN’s live multi-screen sports network accessible online at WatchESPN.com, on smartphones and tablets via the WatchESPN app and through ESPN on Xbox LIVE. “In the world of athletics, there is no bigger brand than that of ESPN,” said Lipscomb Director of Athletics Philip Hutcheson. “The ability to collaborate with ESPN3 and the Atlantic Sun Conference allows us to exponentially increase our reach to fans of college athletics worldwide, and we are thrilled to be on the leading edge of this latest wave of on-campus production. “For Lipscomb alumni, fans, recruits and for fans of college athletics as a whole, this agreement represents another step toward deeper connections with the programs that mean the most to them. A trip to Rupp Arena, Oxford, Miss., and Memphis are just a few of the highlights on the Lipscomb men’s basketball schedule for the 2012-13 season that was unveiled today. The Bisons are set to take on a few big-name teams this season, including the defending National Champions, the Kentucky Wildcats. Outside of conference games, the men’s team will play Kentucky, Ole Miss, Memphis, Gardner-Webb and Austin Peay at their respective stadiums. At home, the Bisons will play Freed-Hardeman, Maryville, Tennessee Tech, UT Martin and recent NCAA tournament participants Murray State in their non-conference match-ups. The annual Battle of the Boulevard series against Belmont will take place at Allen Arena on Friday, Nov. 9, and at Belmont on Tuesday, Dec. 4. This is the first series in which the Bruins are competing outside of the Atlantic Sun Conference, as the team moved into the Ohio Valley Conference earlier this year. Coach Scott Sanderson, entering his 13th season as head coach of the men’s basketball team, told Lipscomb Athletics that he believes having home games against notable, non-conference opponents is very significant for the team. “Those games are important to us,” he said. “Having a couple of marquee games at home like Belmont and Murray State, who will be the first top-25 team to ever come in here and play, is huge.” Sanderson also believes that the lofty schedule might be one of the team’s toughest in recent years. “This is probably one of the most challenging schedules we’ve had,” Sanderson said. “With Memphis, Kentucky and Ole Miss, who I think is going to be a really good SEC team, along with...

Thursday night Lipscomb took on the tough task of handing an undefeated Murray State team their first loss. However, turnovers and several missed opportunities led to a Murray State win, 89-65. The Bisons turned the ball over 23 times, giving the Racers more than enough opportunities to take control. Freshman Malcolm Smith led the Bisons with 13 points and four rebounds, while Ed Daniel and Ivan Aska from Murray State led all scorers with 16 points each....
