On Tuesday afternoon, Lipscomb students packed the stands at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex in order to watch the U.S. women’s soccer team, who was using the field to practice before their match against Scotland on Feb. 13. Buzz grew throughout the afternoon on social media sites as many students began to learn of what was happening down at the soccer complex. The practice even drew a few famous fans — Nashville Predators player Mike Fisher and Tennessee Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. Whether it’s in reference to the city’s rising economy, sports fever, southern charm or constant entertainment, Nashville has been dubbed the new ‘it city,’ and it’s about time. For a few years, different news outlets and magazines have noted the rise both population and economy in Music City, but it seems that 2013 may just be the year that Nashville emerges as a top destination in the country. Back in 2011, Forbes magazine listed Nashville at No. 3 on their list of cities in line to be the ‘next big boom town’. Last year, the Business Insider ranked the city at No. 5 for fastest growing job markets in the U.S. Now, the New York Times is referring to Nashville as the next “it city,” and people can’t wait to become a citizen of the GQ-named ‘Nowville’. For a city that used to be mocked for its honky-tonk feel, how did it rise to the top? To start, the change in country music has helped move Nashville away from the old country vibe. Names like Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton have made it popular to enjoy country music again. Urban and Shelton are both in the national spotlight with roles on the hit television shows American Idol and The Voice, while Underwood, Swift and Lambert have all spent the past five years bringing in a younger demographic to the country music fan base. Over 120 Nashville Predators fans waited outside of Signature Terminal in the early hours of Wednesday morning to welcome their hockey team back to the city the team calls “Smashville.” Why? Because It’s The Cup. The 2012 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs’ tagline is reason enough for fans to welcome their team back to their hometown at 1 a.m. after a game. However, the team gave the fans more reason to show up Wednesday. When the Predators landed at approximately 12:35 a.m. the team was fresh off two wins at Joe Louis Arena, the arena of the Detroit Red Wings. The two wins put Nashville (3-1) in position to win the series on Friday at their home rink, Bridgestone Arena. Some fans showed up as early as 10:00, knowing the team would not land for at least two more hours. The weather cooperated, but was by no means perfect at a misty, brisk, 52 degrees. The fans waited. Because It’s The Cup. When the team finally walked out the doors of the terminal, the inspired crowd gave each member of the hockey team as well as coaches, staff members and front office people an ovation that sounded like it could have easily came from 501 Broadway instead of 960 Hangar Lane. Why? Because It’s The Cup. Television news crews and folks with iPhones captured the moment when Predators enforcer Brian McGrattan walked through the line of people. Head coach Barry Trotz and his assistants Peter Horacek and Lane Lambert soon followed. The foursome passed out fist-bumps with wide smiles.
