After a full day of basketball in Allen Arena Saturday, the Lady Bisons finished with a loss to Northern Kentucky while the men dominated the Norse on the opening day of conference play. The Lady Bisons put up a strong fight throughout the first half against a quick-paced Lady Norse team, but the two teams remained close in scoring until the end of the first half which left Lipscomb trailing by fourteen points. Head coach Greg Brown rejuvenated the team during the break. He stated later that he did not fault their energy at all, and the team did a great job of keeping their spirits up and imitating their routines from practice. Despite the needed break, the second half proved to be too much for the women. In the final 20 minutes of the game, the Lady Bisons worked their way back and cut the lead to eight points; however, they struggled to completely close the deficit. “We held the ball a little bit too much on offense,” Brown said. Junior Danay Fothergill and redshirt sophomore Chandler Cooper revived their team with multiple points off of steals on defense and strong offensive plays. Fothergill was the leading scorer with 21 points. Ultimately, the Lady Bisons could not pull out the win they desired going into the first conference game. The Lady Norse came away with the 81-70 victory. “I thought we played very tough, but we have to be able to put toughness and intensity and technique together for forty minutes,” Brown said. The men’s game, however, had a very different ending. The Bisons were determined from the beginning to bring Lipscomb...

It took a little time, but the Lipscomb Bisons now have a Division 1 win in the W column. The team (3-5) defeated the Tennessee State Tigers (2-7) 77-68 Saturday at Allen Arena in an afternoon tipoff. Senior forward Malcolm Smith (22 points) led the Bisons’ attack inside the paint, where the team amassed 44 of its 77 points. In the first half, the Bisons and Tigers looked evenly matched. Both teams struggled early to generate any sort of offensive pressure. But, Smith helped spark Lipscomb with five straight to give the home team a 9-4 lead with 12:20 to half. The Tigers began to spark their own game from the perimeter soon after to get back in the game. After a quick lead switch-off in the low 20s, the Bisons took back momentum and led at half, 36-31. To start the second, the Tigers came out hot on a 7-0 run to get the 37-36 lead at 18:01, but a 3 from freshman guard Aaron Korn settled the Bisons down. After TSU led by 8, the Bisons got back into the game and inched their way to a strong lead late in the game. Lipscomb never let TSU back in and picked up their third win of the season. Smith led all scorers with 22 and all rebounders with 8, while TSU’s junior guard Marcus Roper was not too far behind in points with 21. Freshman guard Nathan Moran put up 14 for Lipscomb, and sophomore guard Josh Williams had 13. The Bisons will look to build on this one with a road trip to Austin Peay next...

On a day that saw the Lipscomb men’s and women’s basketball, men’s soccer and volleyball teams all play home games, the Bisons almost finished the marathon undefeated. The men’s basketball team provided the nightcap for the day, taking down Berry College 91-70 in their season opener. Head coach Casey Alexander played everyone on the roster early and often, including the four freshmen and one transfer new to the team. Even with usual starter Malcolm Smith not dressing out, the Bisons had more than enough players to go around. “We went into the game with the intention of giving everybody as many minutes as we could and spreading those out, and we were able to stick with it” Alexander said, “it wasn’t nearly as pretty as we wanted it to be, but that [the subbing strategy] was by design.” With many players subbing in and out throughout the game, the Bisons were able to keep fresh bodies in the game constantly in an effort to keep their pace at a high level. Lipscomb was forcing turnovers and scoring off of fast breaks all night, especially during an 11-5 run to start the second half. Berry College was never able to recover from the Bisons run to begin the first half. Lipscomb continued to push the ball, and the quick pace resulted in two big breakaway dunks from Josh Williams, the night’s leading scorer with 32 points on 9-15 shooting. Senior Martin Smith filled up the stat sheet in the win. Smith finished with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Out of all the Bisons debuting on the night, freshman...
