Superstitious students prepare to perform rituals during Super Bowl XLV

The Packers and Steelers are two of the most storied franchises in all of football. On Sunday the teams will meet for the biggest prize in the NFL, and the right to say their team is the best. The Packers haven’t won the Super Bowl since 1996. On the other side of the ball, the Steelers are familiar with the big stage and were crowned world champions twice during the last decade. Aaron Rodgers and the cheese heads come into the game as the sixth seed, but they didn’t mind that at all. They won three games on the road to claim their spot in Dallas, including a 48-21 trouncing of the number one seeded Atlanta Falcons. Big Ben and the Steelers had an easier road to Super Bowl XLV, and it’s not like they haven’t done it before. The Steelers had two wins at home, one against their division rivals the Ravens and the other against Rex Ryan’s Jets. Packers and Steelers fans began showing their teams colors on the Lipscomb campus this week in preparation for Sunday’s big matchup. For sophomore Ryan Nowers it’s a family affair. “My grandfather is from the North and has always been a big Packers fan,” Nowers said. “My dad became a Packers fan when he was younger because of my grandfather and I guess when I was born I just took it to a new level.” Lindsay Trucksis, sophomore vocal performance major from Cincinnati, Ohio, is certain who her favorite Packers player is. “Aaron Rodgers, because he’s better than Brett Favre,” Trucksis said. Annie Thompson, a junior and Pennsylvania native, has...

Baseball’s inter-squad battles set up drive for A-Sun glory

Only three weeks separate the Bisons from their first home game of the 2011 baseball season. But right now the Bisons are excited to take the field for inter-squad games. After weeks of workouts, the players are glad to get in some game-like hitting. “[The workouts] have been tough but they have been productive,” said Brett Teschner, a sophomore catcher. “We really spent a lot of time on what we needed to work on, and we have everyone in as good of season shape as we could with the weather we’ve had to deal with.” All the players were excited to see the throwing of Vanderbilt transfer Richie Goodenow, Connor Sinclair, Mike Grace, Ben Johnson and Chris Nunn during the first inter-squads. But looking from the other end of the battery, Teschner knows he’s in a battle for starting time behind the plate. Senior Matt Brewer, redshirt sophomore Bennett Smith and junior Logan Hostettler will be Teschner’s competition. “[As far as] the catching spot this year, no one has anything won,” Teschner said. “Any one of us can play at any moment. I just think now it will come down to who is the most consistent along with driving in runs and good, productive at bats.” Coach Jeff Forehand says the proof will come both behind the plate and with a bat. “All four of them do some good things,” Forehand said. “We want one guy but right now I can’t say that one guy has won the job. “Hostettler has been back there for a lot of innings. Teschner swings the bat with a lot of pop. Brewer...

Bisons outscore Hatters in second half for third straight win

After a huge win over Belmont, the Lipscomb Bisons were ready for another A-Sun match-up. They have won the previous two games and were looking for the third straight win to continue their streak. The Bisons were wanting to improve on three major things for the Stetson game. “Field goal defense, turnovers and rebounds,” Coach Sanderson said. The first half was a back-and-forth scoring match where the Bisons and the Stetson Hatters tied five times and the lead changed six times. Within two minutes Stetson’s head coach called a timout when the score was tied. Head Coach Derek Waugh eventually received a technical foul in the second half for his behavior. For most of the game Coach Waugh looked disheveled. Throughout the game, the Bisons presented good teamwork with passing around the perimeter and in the paint, and started taking control of the game towards the end of the first and went into the locker room on top, 33-to-26. Lipscomb’s Adnan Hodzic came strong in the first half leading with 10 points, whereas the Hatters’ top scorer Luis Jacobo had 5 points. The Hatters’ Ridge Graham normally averages almost 14 points a game but was held to zero for the 1st half and was kept to two for the whole game. “I thought [Brandon Brown and Justin Glenn] did an excellent job and a host of other guys helping double [Graham] up in the low post,” Sanderson said. Lipscomb let loose a scoring run in the second and kept Stetson under 40 points for over ten minutes while they scored 21 points, putting them at 54 over Stetson’s 40. Stetson...
