The water seems to follow Andrew Thetford wherever he goes. He was here for the Nashville flood last May, and he is in Australia dealing with the flood impacting that continent right now. Thetford, a former Lipscomb student, first went to Australia in January of 2010 to attend a discipleship training school through the University of Nations. After three months of training, he and his team went to India and Nepal to do mission work there. That wasn’t enough for him, though. He felt called to go back to Australia when he was offered a leadership role. He knew that this was an opportunity he could not pass up. “I feel like through service to others we find ourselves, God and the meaning of life on the crazy planet called Earth,” Thetford said. “When we truly want to see the face of Christ we simply need to look at others.” The difference in Thetford’s journey to Australia this year compared to last year is that now he is the one doing the training. Working with a group called YWAM (Youth With A Mission), Thetford was given the opportunity to teach a small group of missionaries for a three month period before they go to a third world country for two months. “It’s three months in Australia, where you learn a different lesson each week,” Thetford said. “Whether it is the father heart of God or fearing the Lord or the Holy Spirit. Mackenzie Johnson has chosen an unfamiliar continent as the location of her upcoming summer adventure. Johnson, a junior double major in nutrition and Spanish, plans to spend a month doing mission work in Africa with an organization called Lifebread. Johnson and four other college interns will be going to Togo, a small country in West Africa, and will join Lifebread’s newest baking projects, providing food to needy people while sharing the message of the Bible. Johnson, originally from Indianapolis, said she was interested in the trip not because of the destination, but because it provides an opportunity to implement her education during the month-long internship. “The location wasn’t such a big deal,” Johnson said. “It wasn’t as big of a deal as what the ministry did. It really, really fits my major. Each of the interns has their own component; my component is nutrition education. If that’s what I’m going to do forever, this will be helpful.” As part of its baking projects, Lifebread builds ovens in villages in Africa and also teaches food safety and cooking classes to the locals. Johnson will be in Togo from May 15 to June 13 and then will spend 6 weeks traveling around the U.S., promoting Lifebread and talking about the efforts in Africa. Respect, bragging rights, an undefeated record and an entire boulevard were at stake on Tuesday night when the Battle of the Boulevard went down inside Allen Arena. Coming off of a big win against USC Upstate, the Bisons had all the confidence in the world that they would be able to improve since the last time they faced the Bruins. The Bisons lost that game 88-52 less than two weeks ago. With the deck stacked against them coming into the game and for much of the first half, the Bisons were able to rally from an 18-point deficit with 24 minutes left in the game. “For the first 16 minutes, we were not very good,” Coach Scott Sanderson said. “We didn’t do anything we wanted to do offensively and defensively. I was extremely aggravated at our players.” In the last four minutes of the first half, the Bisons started their run. Trailing 38-20, the Bisons cut it to 40-31 with an 11-2 run that re-energized not only the team but the fans as well. Luckily for Sanderson, the Bisons did not stop their scoring when the half ended. The Bisons came out red-hot and outscored their cross-town rivals 42-24. “To come back from an 18-point deficit says even more about the resiliency of our players,” Sanderson said. “But it is one game with nine more games to go. The fair is held at the Williamson County Agricultural Expo located off the Peytonsville Road Exit. There will be over 200 job opportunities available exclusively for juniors, seniors, graduate students, and alumni from the 14 schools participating in the event.
