As we near the end of October, Halloween isn’t the only thing on the mind of Lipscomb students. Paint the Herd was Friday night and, as predicted by many, was a major success. The Student Government Association sponsors Paint the Herd each year in the lower level of the Allen Arena West parking garage on the last Friday of October. This was the third year that SGA has sponsored the event. Paint the Herd allows students to spend several hours together as a community partying, singing and throwing paint at one another. One of Lipscomb’s own students served as deejay of the event, and the crowd’s approval of his skills was overwhelming. And, unlike in years past, SGA brought out the paint early, nearly as soon as a majority of the partygoers were in the basement of the parking garage. For a $5 cover charge, students were able to be involved in one of the biggest events of the fall semester. Here are some of the highlights. Bright fluorescent lights, loud music, fog and everyone dancing while throwing paint at each other isn’t something that happens on a regular basis at Lipscomb. But this Friday, Oct. 28, based on last year’s success, SGA is bringing back Paint the Herd. According to SGA member Amy Estepp, one reason why the Paint the Herd tradition is continuing is because “we received amazing support from students last year and even greater responses after the party.” “This year we are having a different DJ and will be expanding the cage to make the space a little larger than last year,” Estepp said, explaining a few changes to the event. Also, this year’s Paint the Herd will last one hour longer. While Paint the Herd is considered a paint-rave, Estepp said the administration is supportive. “We have an amazing administration that supports students and their ideas,” she said, “so it made it an easy decision for us to continue this tradition.” DJ Telemitry will be mixing the music for the night. Last year, many students dressed for the night and wore white t-shirts and SGA handed out white paint suits. Students also brought goggles and wore clothing, including shoes, that they didn’t mind getting paint on. Come prepared to have paint splattered on you and be ready to splatter others. Like last year, the event will take place in the lower level of the Arena West parking garage. Paint the Herd will start at 10 p.m. and end at 1:30 a.m. Lipscomb students can attend for $3 with an ID. Non-students can attend also but for $10. To see what happend last year click...

Daniel Wakefield, president of the Student Government Association, sat down with Lumination to look ahead at what SGA is doing this year to improve the Lipscomb experience for each of its students. “What we want to do is look at student life, figure out how things can be better and then focus our efforts on working with the administration to communicate how things could be better,” Wakefield said. “Part of that is just listening; part of that is just being available. But the other part of that is also being a bridge between student voices and administration’s ears. “ Wakefield said that goal includes things like improving campus, bringing in guest speakers, showing documentaries and helping create great memories. “We try to listen to what students, teachers and generally anyone in the Lipscomb community thinks might add to the experience that is being a Lipscomb student,” Wakefield said. Already this semester, SGA has donated money to the SAC renovation and to installing lights at the intramural field. SGA also gave away tickets to the Hillsong concert and hosted the cornhole tournament. Wakefield said the organization plans to have a concert in the winter, and for a spring event, SGA and campus ministry have invited author Donald Miller to campus. As it did last year, SGA will sponsor Paint the Herd this semester. Paint the Herd is designed to be a fun, exciting on-campus event to keep students interested in having a good time at Lipscomb on the weekend.
