90s singers, gods and goddesses and even Miley Cyrus were present on the Lipscomb University campus the night of Oct. 23. Phi Sigma hosted its 10th annual Phi Sigma Date Auction, and students were excited about the night. The event is hosted with a charity in mind, and this year the proceeds from the event went to Thistle Farms. Thistle Farms is a social enterprise group that is run by the women that stay in the Magdalene House. The women create natural body and bath products and sell them. They create products that are both good for the environment and for the people that use the products. “We were able to do a great thing for a great cause,” Sarah Robertson, the date auction director, said. Robertson was in charge of the event, and is very involved with the mission of Thistle Farms. Thistle Farms ultimate goal is to give women who are on the streets a second chance by providing a healthy place to stay and work. The money made on the products goes directly back to the women who made them. Thistle Farms products are now sold in over 200 stores around Tennessee. Phi Sigma puts on the date auction in hopes of raising money to help other women be added into Thistle Farms. Aaron Schmelzer and Madeline Smith lead this week’s Lumination News from behind the anchor’s desk, bringing you the latest news from campus. Vanderbilt student Kyle Fuller is writing a book titled “Below the Rim,” and Lipscomb students are mentioned, but not in the most positive way. Madeline Smith gives us more insight on the matter. Reporter Brianne Welch also gives us highlights from the Tokens show, with talented Dove Award nominee Ellie Holcomb. For the second year in a row, Phi Sigma took home first place in the powderpuff football tournament after beating Pi Delta in the championship game. Phi Sigma athletic director Mallory Johnson was proud of her team’s effort. “We won last year, the first year of this tournament,” Johnson said, “I love to see the clubs having friendly competition, but we just wanted to come out and defend the title.” The teams played two rounds before being narrowed down to two teams for the championship. In the first round, Delta Sigma beat Kappa Chi, Phi Sigma beat Phi Nu and Delta Xi forfeited giving Delta Omega a win. Pi Delta beat Delta Omega and Phi Sigma beat Delta Sigma in the second round. Obviously the clubs wanted to win, but that was not the main goal for the tournament. “Of course I would have liked to win to go to the championship, but I just love seeing all the clubs out here enjoying the day together,” Delta Omega president Makenzie Kanyuh said, “Events like this put social clubs in a positive light.” After the first two rounds, a break took place where the clubs enjoyed food and drinks together. Music and other tailgate games were being played as well. The tournament also provided a time for the pledges to have a cheer-off during the games. “Social clubs rarely ever get to come together as one Greek community,” Kanyuh said. “It’s kind of funny powderpuff brought us together today, but the boys got a good laugh and the girls got to be a little competitive. A new school year means new beginnings, and for social clubs on Lipscomb’s campus those new beginning are on social media. Female social clubs Pi Delta, Delta Sigma, and Phi Sigma have joined various forms of social media in order to promote their clubs. Pi Delta was the pioneer social club to get on social media by starting an Instagram account. The brains behind the account, a transfer student named Sydney Smartt, said her sorority, Delta Zeta from The University of Alabama, inspired her. “Lots of sororities from state schools have accounts, and so I figured why not bring them to Lipscomb?” said Smartt. “I think it gives girls who want to pledge a glimpse at what the club is like and what events they do. It’s also a great way to get info out about prospectives and rush.” Anne Le, Phi Sigma’s historian, had similar reasons for beginning an Instagram account for her club. “I thought it was a good way to reach out to freshman so they can see events and things we do,” said Le. “And it’s also a place alumni can see what their club is up to.” The posts on Pi Delta and Phi Sigma’s accounts usually are from club events and contain information on the club’s event calendar. “I try to post before and after events to make sure people know what’s going on,” said Le. Delta Sigma is the only social club to have begun a Twitter account. Lipscomb’s 51st edition of Singarama is in full swing, and the six hosts and hostesses are excited to share the hard work they have dedicated to the show. Senior Lincoln Mick, sophomore Michael Oruma, junior Caitlin Phelps, senior Lacey Printz, junior Tyler Russell and junior McKenna Smith are the hosts and hostesses of the 2014 Singarama. This year’s theme is Singarama’s On Fire. The show will consist of three different smaller themes that will be broken up by performances from the hosts and hostesses who vary in Singarama experience. Three have hosted the show before, and three are new to the hosting lineup. Smith and Oruma hosted last year, and Mick hosted his freshman year. “I’ve wanted to do it for the past four years, but because of track, I haven’t been able to because I’ve been competing, but since I’m injured, I have the opportunity to, and I’m just really excited about it,” Printz said. “This is my first year, also,” Russell said. I saw the show last year and loved it. “It just looked like so much fun, so I just thought I’d try out.” The hosts and hostesses’ job is to entertain the audience and keep the flow of the show going. “We kind of kick off the show, and then we help entertain the crowd in between social club shows,” Russell said.
