The Civil Wars embody all aspects of love with new album

The Civil Wars’ debut album, Barton Hollow, is honest, heartbreaking, uplifting and as real as it gets. Made up of Joy Williams and John Paul White, this new group has taken the Nashville music scene by storm. And with their recent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, they will surely take the nation and world by storm, too. You shouldn’t try doing homework while listening to the record, as it’s hard to sit there not eagerly listening and waiting for the next line to relate to your life. The album does the extraordinary thing of taking all aspects of love and putting them onto a four and a half inch disk. The album starts off with the lingering track “20 Years.” Already, just one track in, you are ready for a story to be told to you through song. A high spot of the album for me is the song “Posison and Wine.” The song, which was featured on NBC’s Grey’s Anatomy, is the one that propelled the duo to stardom. The lyrics capture all sides of love. When Williams sings Your hands can heal / your hands can bruise, you can really feel the emotion and truth she presents with her voice. The song takes the good and the bad of love and compares them, leaving you not knowing what to feel. The title track for the album, “Barton Hollow” is Americana in its purest form. The song, written about White’s childhood home in Loretto, Tenn., is one that almost everyone can relate to. Life is hard a lot of the times, and sometimes it feels...

Friends of Lipscomb, The Civil Wars to appear on Tonight Show

Remember that talented duo that performed in Shamblin a couple months back, sponsored by our SGA? Well, that same duo will be on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno this Thursday night along with Cameron Diaz and Eric Stonestreet. The Civil Wars, featuring Joy Williams and John Paul White, will be playing the title track from their forthcoming album “Barton Hollow.” Their album is set to drop on the first of next month. The Tonight Show booking comes after the duo played in Europe for the first time, and playing a string of sold out shows up and down the West Coast. The album release concert will be held at The Belcourt Theater here in Nashville on February 2nd. For your sake, we hope you ordered tickets early because it, too, is already sold out. Lumination, with the help of SGA, was able to sit down with Joy and John Paul when they played their show here. To see part of the interview, check out the video below. Lipscomb’s SGA presents The Civil Wars in concert

The Civil Wars, an up-and-coming Americana duo who hail from Nashville, will perform a free concert for Lipscomb students with IDs this Friday, December 3. The show starts at 7:00 p.m. in Shamblin Theater. Doors open at 6, and space is limited. Dillon Hodges is the opening act. Joy Williams and John Paul White, who make up the band, met a year and a half ago and immediately started writing music and performing together. “I cannot wait until the prettiest woman in the music biz is here on campus this weekend,” read freshman Adam Sain’s facebook status. Their four-song EP was released on iTunes and debuted at #4 on the Singer/Songwriter Top Albums chart and had a song featured on Grey’s Anatomy. Their first full-length cd, Barton Hollow, is set to be released on February 1 of next year. Their best-known song, “Poison and Wine,” has been on USA Today’s “Picks of the Week” list, and Taylor Swift said of the song: “This song kills me. It’s such a real glimpse into miscommunications in a relationship. Love can feel so wrong and so right at the same time. I think this is my favorite duet. It’s exquisite.” Their song “Barton Hollow” will be used in Billy Reid’s 2011 Spring fashion show. “You’re not going to want to miss out on this exciting event,” said SGA spiritaul life chair Amy Etepp, a junior public relations major form Kingsport, Tenn. “The Civil Wars will become your new favorite group.” Don’t miss this exciting event!
