Taqueria del Sol impresses on first visit with excellent cuisine

Taqueria del Sol, the new restaurant in 12th Avenue South, has certainly got my vote.  The Atlanta-based restaurant opened for the first time in Nashville on Tuesday, Jan. 22. The name of the restaurant makes the diner think of of truly authentic Mexican cuisine, but that is not entirely the case.  While Taqueria del Sol is known for fantastic Mexican food, there are some delicious nontraditional items that are much more prominent. The first thing the waiter said to me when suggesting foods to try was that I should try the turnip greens.  Now, I had never had them before, and turnip greens did not sound like they would taste good with a taco, but I gave it a shot.  I was not disappointed.  The turnip greens were spectacular!  I make a point of emphasizing them because these turnip greens have been listed as one of the “100 Food You Absolutely Must Try Before You Die” according to Bon Appetit and Garden & Gun magazines. Another menu item that was especially delightful yet different for a Mexican restaurant was the shrimp corn chowder.  I have never seen corn chowder as a Mexican dish, but either way, it was absolutely the best thing I tasted.  I recommend this dish whenever you visit. Onto some more dishes — tacos and burritos.  Taqueria del Sol has some specialty tacos.  For example, I had the Memphis taco.  It is simply a taco that consists of pulled pork, barbeque sauce and cheese (if you ask).  I loved it. The burritos were also fantastic.  Several different sauces are offered for the burrito.  They offer somewhat...

New Midtown restaurant offers s’mores, welcoming environment

Don’t be confused by its name; the newest Midtown restaurant is not a Tavern, at least not in the old-fashioned sense. It is, instead, a place for good food, people-watching and enjoying fire-toasting your own S’mores right at your table. But more on that later. Located in the old Lime venue, at 1904 Broadway, the newly renovated and simplistically chic eatery is perfect for lunch or dinner. With a respectably priced menu and large portion size, it’s a great place for students to venture and become acquainted with one of the most popular areas in Nashville. Convenient walking distance to several after-dinner settings provides guests of Tavern options galore. A close friend and I ordered several tastings off the menu. We began with the homemade goat cheese guacamole served Mason jar-style, roasted fresh veggies and crispy sweet potato fries. All was delicious and contributed an array of textures and tastes to the palate of the evening. For the main course we had the seared salmon, Caesar salad served with a heaping pile of calamari, and “not your typical Pei-Wei” chicken lettuce wraps. The serving size of each dish was plenty and could easily be split for the budget-conscious. Another friend we ran into that night, Chad Little, was impressed, too. “This place is beyond amazing,” Little said. “I would bring my girlfriend or my mom here. The place is full of beautiful and lively people.  The great thing about Nashville is so many people are young and successful with a touch of southern flair, and a lot of those (people) are here tonight.“ We ended our dinner after two hours of amazing conversation and...

Taco Mamacita offers quality on a college budget

If you’re in the mood for fresh, quality Mexican food, it’s now just past Belmont Mansion in Edgehill Village. Taco Mamacita is an up-and-coming taco restaurant with two locations, one in Chattanooga, Tenn. and the other in Nashville, Tenn. More specifically, Nashville’s Taco Mamacita is located in Edgehill Village, an area of town only about 10 minutes away from Lipscomb’s campus. The vibe of the restaurant is fun-loving and lively. Patrons have the option of indoor, bar, or patio seating in their street corner location. The noise level inside the restaurant wasn’t loud enough to keep me from conversing with my friends, and it wasn’t quiet enough to make me feel like the tables around me were eavesdropping. The service was friendly and quick, though it was getting busier when we were leaving around 6 p.m.  Our waitress was happy to make recommendations and tell us her favorite dishes. The menu offers a wide variety of specialty tacos, enchiladas, roasted Peruvian chicken, starters, and sides that differ from the stereotypical Mexican food joint. Some of the available sides were cilantro-spinach rice, charros beans, chipotle turnip greens, and sweet potato fries. We started out with the mango jalapeño salsa and chips. The chips and salsa are not free, but one shouldn’t expect them to be considering how good they were. Heeding our waitress’s advice, I ordered the Taco Royale the Oy Vey with the Mexican street corn, while my friend got the chicken enchilada and sweet potato fries. We could guess by looking at it that our food was made with fresh quality ingredients, and the taste confirmed this observation....
