Ever feel bored in your dorm room wondering what’s going on around campus? Louis Nelms, chair for the Student Activities Board, has all the answers you need to get active this semester. “Student Activities Board is a group of about 12-15 people who are involved of different aspects of campus life,” Nelms said. The group comes together every week and discusses ideas for different events to host for Lipscomb students. Nelms, with one semester already under his belt, said he couldn’t wait to get the spring semester underway. He said that we should be expecting several big events relatively soon. A Super Bowl party, a Home Run Derby and Brickyard Basketball are being planned to kick the semester off in style. If you want to relive your childhood, you’ll want to remember “90’s night.” Nelms said it’s sure to be a blast with Space Jam, Nintendo 64’s and Dunk-a-roos in the game plan. Nelms also recommends for students to stay alert for updates on Singarama. “Singarama is definitely something to look forward to. It will be April 4-6th, and you really shouldn’t miss it,” Nelms said. The theme for this year’s show was announced via email earlier this week. The theme will be Timeless, with Yesterday, Today and Forever as the group performances. Nelms said this year’s show won’t be one to miss. “It’s Singarama’s 50th anniversary, so it’s got to be a big show,” Louis said. Looking for something to do during the cold spring semester days? “All Hands on Deck,” directed by Morgan Mathis, was announced Saturday night as winner of the sweepstakes competition for the 49th annual Singarama. After winning the music contest Friday night and the staging contest Saturday afternoon, “All Hands on Deck” also won the sweepstakes title for accumulating the most total points throughout the four Singarama performances. The cast was comprised of social clubs Phi Sigma, Tau Phi, Gamma Xi and friends. “We were all really excited,” said Brennan McNeil, sailor in the show. “We are really happy- we put a lot of work in. Winning doesn’t mean it’s the best show; it just reflects all the work we put in.” McNeil’s love interest in the show, Kelly Dean, also said the group’s hard work was what pushed them over the top. “We literally worked day and night on the show,” Dean said. “The hard work and effort paid off because we got the big win.” Some of the show’s songs included “Hard Knock Life,” “I Can Transform Ya,” “Mercy” and “Happy Days.” The group told the story of sailors called upon to rescue a missing ship, but there was a catch – most of the crew had never set sail before. From backwoods country folks to Italian gangsters, the diverse cast kept the audience laughing. There was even a line of dialogue referencing High Rise’s water problems. “The Land of Dreams,” directed by Cayla Cleaver, won Thursday night’s theme contest during the 49th annual Singarama kickoff performance. As opening night for Singarama approaches next weekend, student groups are striving to amaze the audiences with a showcase of their talent, staging and story lines. Singarama is Lipscomb’s annual event that brings social club members and their friends together for a performance competition. This annual tradition has been one of Lipscomb’s main events for nearly half of a century. Joe Muchmore, a senior biology major from Boulder, Colo., has been in Singarama the past two years and will be a host again for this year’s production. He said participants are really feeling the “crunch” of doing the show prior to spring break instead of after, as its been in previous years. “It’s definitely a little more stressful trying to get everything together,” he said. “Just trying to get the lyrics memorized and learn the songs in such a short amount of time… it’s harder to get it ready for the final performance. In the past years, the two weeks up to the show we had everything pretty much ready and were just rehearsing, whereas now we’re still trying to learn how to do everything.” Muchmore said hosts and hostesses are currently focusing on “being confident with the harmonies, so that when the show comes, we can hit it strong and not be iffy. I think that’s really crucial for a good sound.” He said the cast is feeling nervous excitement about the performances. “Right now, it’s definitely stressed more than excited, but it’s a stressed excited,” Muchmore said. “It’s because we’re a week away, and we haven’t even worked everything out yet.
