Weekend sports roundup

Men’s soccer swept, women’s soccer finished their home portion of the season and the volleyball team is still dominating the Atlantic Sun conference. Oh, and softball in October? It was all a part of this weekend in Lipscomb sports. The Lady Bisons softball team went 4-0 this weekend, beating Chipola twice, Milligan once and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville once. Junior Whitney Kiihnl pitched a complete game against Tennessee. Kiihnl allowed one walked batter in the first, but did not allow another base runner until the seventh-inning when a UT player reached on a bunt single. Freshman Haley Elliot homered for the Lady Bisons, giving them their only run against the Lady Vols. The Bison soccer team swept this weekend on their Florida road trip, beating Jacksonville and North Florida. Miguel DaSilva and Garrett McLaughlin, scored two goals each on the weekend. Tyler Burkhardt, Garret McLaughlin, and Andrew Chamberlain also scored for the Bisons. Lipsomb’s record is now even at 2-2-0 in the Atlantic Sun and 6-6-0 overall. Volleyball sweeps Mercer in Atlantic Sun opener

The Lady Bisons may have won the match, but they did not seem to be in complete sync throughout all three close sets. “I was a little disappointed,” said Lady Bisons coach Brandon Rosenthal. “I wanted us to give a little bit more.” The third set was the closest with the Mercer Bears coming within two before the Lady Bisons won the set 25-22. Tonight’s game was the first of only 10 conference games this season. The format this year is much different than years past. The Atlantic Sun schedule will look a little different this year as it will consist of a single round robin format, with each member playing each other once for the first time since 2007. In previous years teams played each other twice, once at home and once on the road. “Every one counts that much more,” Rosenthal said.  “They’re pretty motivated and they know what’s at hand.” The Lady Bisons will have to fight their way through a tough conference to defend their title as Atlantic Sun conference champions. “To [the team] it’s about winning a championship,” Rosenthal said. The Lady Bisons won set one 25-16, set two 25-20 and set three 25-22. It was the A-Sun opener for both teams. The Lady Bisons are 12-5, 1-0 in the conference. Mercer is 6-13, 0-1 in the A-Sun. The Lady Bisons will face Kennesaw St. tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Allen...

Lady Bisons lose heartbreaker in final seconds

Lady Bisons lose heartbreaker in final seconds

With six seconds left on the clock what appeared to be a game heading into overtime turned into a crushing 2-1 loss for the Lipscomb Lady Bisons. Facing Kennesaw State in the Atlantic Sun opener for both teams Friday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex the Lady Bisons, picked to finish number 10 in the conference, gave the number one preseason team all it could handle. “It is the hardest and most devastating loss I have experienced as a player or a coach,” Lipscomb coach Jon Ireland said. “I felt like we could have won the game if we went to overtime. I thought we had the momentum.” The two teams fought to a 0-0 deadlock in the first half. At the 48:56 mark of the second half Kennesaw State took the lead on a penalty kick by Alma Gardarsdottir. “Our defense was awesome,” Ireland said. “I can’t say enough about Katie Woods and Meghan McGuire in the middle. But the penalty kick took the wind out of us.“ The Lady Bisons never gave up, tying the game with 1:44 left to play. Andie Thornton, battling one-on-one, put the ball into the corner of the net. “That took a lot of heart,” Ireland said. “We have outworked our opponent in every game this year. The key ingredient for us is our work ethic.” Brittany Vining decided the game with a clear shot from the box. “There is a reason Kennesaw State is a championship team,” Ireland said. “It’s all about finishing games and they find a way to do it.” Last season on Oct. 9 the Lady Bisons fell...
