Lumination’s Top 10 Stories of 2013

Hello, Lumination readers! As we celebrate the beginning of 2014, it’s time to take a look back at some of the biggest stories at Lipscomb during the year that was – 2013.  Before we take a look at the year’s top stories, we take a moment to pause and remember those we lost in the past year. Former Lipscomb professors Axel Swang, Patty Dugger, Oliver Yates, and Bill Collins all passed, as did Lipscomb student Isaac Phillips and Bisons super fan Chuck Ross. We continue to pray for their families and friends. A few stories right on the heels of our top 10 list involved some special visitors to campus and two major, annual Lipscomb events, as well as a few people in new positions of leadership. U.S. women’s soccer team practiced at university field in February, drawing a large crowd of soccer fans and inquisitive Lipscomb students. In March, YouTube sensations Walk Off the Earth headlined the spring concert at Alumni Auditorium. In April, Singarama celebrated its 50th anniversary, and, in December, Lighting of the Green held its 9th installment. In 2013, we also welcomed Steve Davidson as a new campus minister and Jim Humphrey as the new director of security. And, in April, Andrew Hunt was elected to be the new SGA president. Drew Watson was elected as his VP. 10. Titans QBs Jake Locker, Matt Hasselbeck and Rusty Smith speak in The Gathering  In March, the three quarterbacks for the resident Tennessee Titans appeared in The Gathering to shed light on each player’s faith. In this semester’s seventh installment of Lumination News, Savanna Schubert and Nick Glende are behind the news desk to update you about what’s happening on campus. Nicolette Carney brings you up to speed with sports, Jessica Burke fills you in on the week’s top world news headlines, Brianna Langley gives the scoop on all things entertainment and Kage Sanderson delivers your weather forecast. Lipscomb sweeps Belmont during “Belmont Black Out Weekend”

Sweep? Yes, Lipscomb will take one. It’s not often that Lipscomb and Belmont play one another three times in four days, but in 2011, it happened. Lipscomb came out on top each time, too. In volleyball, the Lady Bisons continued their conference winning streak, beating Belmont in five sets. The Lady Bisons won this edition of the “Battle of the Boulevard”, but it was a come-from-behind effort. Belmont won the first set 25-20 and the Lady Bisons evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-23 second set. Belmont bounced back to win set three 25-20. But the Lady Bisons came back in a big way in set four with a 25-13 decision. In set five the Lady Bisons held a 10-5 lead but had to hold on at the end for a 15-13 decision. Middle blocker Katie Rose lead the team in kills with 20 and tied for the team lead in digs with 19. Stephanie Rex also had 19 digs. The Lady Bisons are now 13-6 overall and 7-0 in the Atlantic Sun. Friday night, the women’s soccer team hosted Belmont for Part II of the “Battle of the Boulevard.” With the 2-1 victory, it marked the first time that the Lady Bisons had ever beaten the other team on the boulevard.   The game-winning goal came from the head of Katie Wood off of a corner kick from Daniel Bethke. The win will prove to be a gigantic one looking back on the season. This could be the start of something good the Coach Ireland’s team going in to the end of conference play. The Lady Bisons...

Men’s soccer gets defensive en route to improvement

The Lipscomb men’s soccer team has been plagued with many issues early in the season. From two top sophomores not returning to play until this past week to losing players during crucial moments in games because play got too physical. But the reality isn’t as bad as it seems. The Bisons placed second in the Brentwood Invitational a week ago, after the team tied twice in double overtime, against IPFW and Bowling Green. “Every game we’re making improvements,” said Coach Charles Morrow. “The process is just taking a little longer than it has in years past. Every game we’re getting better, which is an encouraging sign.” The Bisons also added two sophomores back into their ranks, Kevin Barber and Nick Bibb. The team isn’t just trying to win games, but they’re trying to come together and play more as a team, a single unit instead of 11 individual units. “Our style of play is coming together each game,” Morrow said. “We don’t have a dynamic game-changer, but we’ve got a ton of very good players. It’s going to be a total team effort every game.” The team defense is probably its strength. Recently playing the high scoring Xavier Musketeers, the Bisons only gave up one goal to a deflected 15-yard kick. The team has been able to focus more practice time to improving the offense because of their stellar defense. There is hope too. Recently, against VMI, the Bisons earned their fist victory.  With a stellar offensive performance, Lipscomb  had 21 shots on goal throughout the game.   By Liam...
