Titans quarterbacks Locker, Hasselbeck and Smith talk faith, football in the Gathering

Two days after a slew of famous country music singers performed at Lipscomb, the three quarterbacks for the Tennessee Titans spoke in the Gathering on Thursday morning to a crowd consisting of Lipscomb students from both the college and Lipscomb Academy. Quarterbacks Rusty Smith, Jake Locker and Matt Hasselbeck sat down in a Q-&-A with Scott Sager, the university’s vice president of Church Services, to talk about their faiths and, of course, some football as well. The very first topic addressed was how football and faith work together in the lives of these professional athletes. “I grew up around football in Colorado, but my parent’s weren’t really strong in their faith until I was in third grade,” Hasselbeck said. The veteran quarterback went on to say how involved he and his family were in the church even through his high school career. Locker took the mic next, but according to the newest Titans quarterback, faith did not really come into play until his sophomore year in high school. “I had a coach who challenged me to become a stronger believe, and he started a Bible study with us, and it kind of grew from there,” Locker said. When Smith took the mic, he said that faith definitely came first in his life because he did not even start playing football until his eighth grade year. “I was very fortunate to have a mom and a dad who grew up in a church themselves,” Smith said. The interview went on for around 30 minutes, but the guys were able to leave the student body and everyone in attendance with some...

Social media impacts LU athletics

Seeking greater recognition for Lipscomb sports teams, the athletic department is expanding its use of social media. Garner Goode, director of sales and marketing, says LU athletics, while examining all forms of social media, is particularly taking aim at the use of Twitter to represent — and spread the word — about every team. He said he’s working on getting a Twitter account set up for every sports team. There is also one main profile that is @Lipscombbisons that serves as an overall account to post about every team. Goode says that by having individual team accounts, it lets fans follow specific teams more closely. A new program is up and running and can be activated through www.bisonsmobile.com. Go to the website on your smart phone and follow the directions to activate it. This will let you have instant stats right at your fingertips. The Bison Perks is a new rewards system that gives fans the opportunity to win free prizes by attending events and tweeting certain things and using specific hashtags. To learn more about the Perks visit http://www.bisonperks.com. Overall the department is developing new social media outlets every day and making it easier for fans to follow their favorite teams and, at the same time, build awareness of Lipscomb’s athletes and athletics. These are the Twitter account set up so far: @bisonbaseball — Baseball @lu_softball — Softball @LipscombUtrack – Track/ Cross Country @ladybisonsoccer – Women’s Soccer @luMsoccer – Men’s Soccer @lipscombvball – Volleyball @LipscombWBB – Women’s Basketball Go follow your teams to get constant updates from games and team events. Bisons can’t overcome Ospreys in regular season finale

Looking to build on Thursday night’s win over the University of Jacksonville, the men’s basketball team turned in a valiant effort at home Saturday night against the University of North Florida Ospreys (13-18, 8-10 in conference), but effort wasn’t enough to take the win. The team fell to the visitors 85-78 in a game that solidified the Bisons’ bracket seating for the Atlantic-Sun tournament. After a strong start by Lipscomb (leading by six at 14:55), North Florida fought their way back to make it a close first half. That is, until the last three minutes, where the Bisons went on a run, widening the margin to seven at the half. The second half saw more strong play from Lipscomb, holding a 10-point lead with a little more than 10 remaining. Unfortunately, the Ospreys once again chipped away at the lead, eventually taking the top score at 3:30. After this, the game became a back-and-forth of jumpers, layups and free-throws, with the Ospreys hitting key shots at moments, and the Bisons missing when it counted. North Florida walked away from Allen Arena with the win. The Bisons end their regular season 12-17 (7-11 in the A-Sun). Senior Deonte Alexander, who was honored at half court before the game for Senior Night, led the Bisons in scoring with 19, while redshirt sophomore Carter Sanderson added in 16 points. Junior Khion Sankey led the team in rebounds with nine and had 12 points on the night. Sankey said he felt that the team’s shooting percentage in the second half was a cause for trouble. “I feel like we played hard. They just made...
