SGA set for new year, new events and new memories

Daniel Wakefield, president of the Student Government Association, sat down with Lumination to look ahead at what SGA is doing this year to improve the Lipscomb experience for each of its students. “What we want to do is look at student life, figure out how things can be better and then focus our efforts on working with the administration to communicate how things could be better,” Wakefield said. “Part of that is just listening; part of that is just being available. But the other part of that is also being a bridge between student voices and administration’s ears. “ Wakefield said that goal includes things like improving campus, bringing in guest speakers, showing documentaries and helping create great memories. “We try to listen to what students, teachers and generally anyone in the Lipscomb community thinks might add to the experience that is being a Lipscomb student,” Wakefield said. Already this semester, SGA has donated money to the SAC renovation and to installing lights at the intramural field. SGA also gave away tickets to the Hillsong concert and hosted the cornhole tournament. Wakefield said the organization plans to have a concert in the winter, and for a spring event, SGA and campus ministry have invited author Donald Miller to campus. As it did last year, SGA will sponsor Paint the Herd this semester. Paint the Herd is designed to be a fun, exciting on-campus event to keep students interested in having a good time at Lipscomb on the weekend. About 700 students attended Paint the Herd last October, in the basement of the east parking garage. During the paint rave,...

Lipscomb’s athletic director, Phillip Hutcheson, announced this morning on 102.5 The Game that all of Lipscomb’s basketball games will be broadcasted this year on the station. “We’ve been looking for a partner for a while now,” Hutcheson said. “Two-thirds of Lipscomb alumni live within this listening area.” Formerly known as 1025 The Party, The Game is now the flagship station for the Nashville Predators and ESPN radio. “Ten of our thirteen guys are from the listening area,” Hutcheson said. “We’re thrilled to be on the air.” Long time play-by-play man Jonathon Seamon will be calling the games, just like always. He’ll have a new color guy, though, since his son, Benjamin, just graduated. Lipscomb is partnering the Jackson Family of companies that will be the presenting sponsor.   We’ll have more, later....

Lady Bisons fall to Western Kentucky in straight sets

This evenings much anticipated match against Western Kentucky went down to a final call in the third set before the Lady Bisons lost 3-0.During the first set the Lady Bisons had trouble blocking Western Kentucky’s kills, and didn’t seem to have an answer for them otherwise. After falling behind early the Lady Bisons lost 14-25 in the first set. The score of the second set isn’t much different, but the Lady Bisons played with more enthusiasm, keeping the game close before losing 15-25. In the first two sets coach Brandon Rosenthal had Abby Fay, a red shirt senior, at libero; in the third set he moved freshman Megan Stout into libero in order to let Fay help current A-Sun player of the week, Katie Rose and senior Char Ursell on the frontline. The Lady Bisons went into the third set with clear heads that helped them get a 10-5 lead midway through the set. After Western Kentucky tied it up at 12-12 the Lady Bisons were unable to recover and lost the set 20-25 on a call where it was uncertain whether or not the ball was tipped out of bounds. The Lady Bisons will be traveling to Notre Dame this weekend for an Invitational before returning to Allen Arena next Wednesday at 6:30 for a match against Austin...

Lady Bisons go 2-1 in 2011 Lipscomb Invitational

One thing is clear about the Lady Bisons volleyball team: they won’t go down without a fight. The Lady Bisons lost their last match in the inaugural Lipscomb Invitational to Arkansas State in four close sets Saturday afternoon. In the first set, the Lady Bisons couldn’t seem to find their rhythm, losing 15-25, and then fell just short in the second, losing 24-26. During the third set, the Lady Bisons used the energy from their home crowd to win 25-16. “I think they feed off of the energy, so it’s good to be at home,” said Lady Bisons Coach Brandon Rosenthal. The Lady Bisons were able to get ahead a little in the fourth set but fell short 23-25, losing the match 2-1. “The girls have been working hard,” said Rosenthal. “We’ve come up short just a little, but I think it’ll help tremendously.” The Lady Bisons will take on Western Kentucky this Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 6:30 p.m. in Allen...

Lady Bisons win first two matches in Invitational, extend home winning streak

In what served as their home opener and the first Lipscomb Invitational, the Lady Bisons volleyball team won both matches against Tennessee Tech, bringing their winning streak at Allen Arena to twenty-nine. “This is the first time we’ve hosted the tourney, and it’s fun,” said Coach Brandon Rosenthal. “I’m hoping that these couple wins, especially at home, will help tremendously.” Earlier Friday, the Lady Bisons defeated Tennessee Tech in four sets. They easily won the first set 25-8, before losing the second set 19-25. They followed that up with two wins during their final matches, 27-25 and 25-10 respectively. The Lady Bisons opened their season on the road in Houston, dropping all three matches but not without coming away with good insight to what they have as a team. “I wanted to see if we had a fight in us, and we did,” Rosenthal said.  “We’re a young team…and even though we took three losses, we fought hard.” The Lady Bisons swept Charlotte in Friday’s evening match, but it didn’t come without a fight. After winning the first two sets 25-19, the Lady Bisons had to work together as a team to fight off Charlotte’s rally in the third set. When Charlotte came back to set the score at 21-20, Coach Rosenthal called a timeout to bring the team’s focus together. “We wanted to get everybody on the same page and wanted to put a little pressure on them,” Coach Rosenthal recalled of the timeout. The Lady Bisons won the third set 25-23 on a controversial call to take the match. “In the end I don’t know if it...
