For most Lipscomb students, playing Ultimate Frisbee is only a hobby. But for a small group of students it is a full-blown sport. Jordan Bates, a Senior marketing major from Nashville, got the idea to start the Ultimate team in 2009 after watching some other people play. “I just saw a lot of people playing Ultimate in intramurals, and I thought that a lot of people had the potential to be really good,” Bates said. “We’ve grown and gotten a lot better since that point.” After the idea of the team came together, the next step was actually to turn that idea into action. The suggestion of an Ultimate Frisbee team was presented to SGA in order to get the appropriate funds for jerseys and tournament entry fees. “I think it was good exposure for the school, and it gets more people involved with extra curricular activities on campus,” Bates said. “They have been kind enough thus far to give us really good funding to enter tournaments.” The Ultimate circuit is not defined in conferences like the rest of the sports at Lipscomb. Instead, the region divisions are called “sections.” Lipscomb is in the Alabama section along with teams like Auburn, Alabama, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt and several other large schools. “It’s a pretty big deal in college,” Bates said. “Most schools have a team, if not two.” Don’t think that just because Lipscomb is competing against larger schools that they cannot contend. Last season the Bisons came in seventh out of 20 teams in their sectional tournament. “It feels great knowing that we are lining up with big SEC...

With six seconds left on the clock what appeared to be a game heading into overtime turned into a crushing 2-1 loss for the Lipscomb Lady Bisons. Facing Kennesaw State in the Atlantic Sun opener for both teams Friday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex the Lady Bisons, picked to finish number 10 in the conference, gave the number one preseason team all it could handle. “It is the hardest and most devastating loss I have experienced as a player or a coach,” Lipscomb coach Jon Ireland said. “I felt like we could have won the game if we went to overtime. I thought we had the momentum.” The two teams fought to a 0-0 deadlock in the first half. At the 48:56 mark of the second half Kennesaw State took the lead on a penalty kick by Alma Gardarsdottir. “Our defense was awesome,” Ireland said. “I can’t say enough about Katie Woods and Meghan McGuire in the middle. But the penalty kick took the wind out of us.“ The Lady Bisons never gave up, tying the game with 1:44 left to play. Andie Thornton, battling one-on-one, put the ball into the corner of the net. “That took a lot of heart,” Ireland said. “We have outworked our opponent in every game this year. The key ingredient for us is our work ethic.” Brittany Vining decided the game with a clear shot from the box. “There is a reason Kennesaw State is a championship team,” Ireland said. “It’s all about finishing games and they find a way to do it.” Last season on Oct. 9 the Lady Bisons fell...

It was all about revenge tonight for Lipscomb as they shutout UNC Aseville 2-0 in the opening round of the Hyatt Place Select Tournament.Last year, UNC Asheville took home the trophy after beating the Bisons 2-1. “Last year it was a game where we started to see cracks in the armor, then it was a downhill slide from there,” Lipscomb coach Charles Morrow said. “So, to have a tight game and have to battle through and keep the shutout and get a couple of goals in the process was very good.” The game was scoreless until the 70-minute mark when senior Garrett McLaughlin scored from 20 yards out to give the Bisons a 1-0 lead. “I just saw an opening and took the shot,” McLaughlin said. “I guess it moved a little bit, so the goalie had a hard time.” The win tonight gave the team its third consecutive win, after winning the Belmont Invitational last weekend. With the consistent play, it looks as if the team is improving in each game. “There were a few times in the first half where we were playing as good as I had seen,” Morrow said. “Not only as good as I have seen this year, but throughout my four or five year tenure here. “ Lipscomb moved the ball very well in the first half, generating a lot of chances, but came up short until McLaughlin’s goal in the second. “The challenge is doing that for a complete game,” Morrow said. “Asheville is a very tough team that can present some challenges that sort of gets us out of our style...

It was just like a rivalry win is supposed to be: tough, focused and full of hard work. The Lady Bisons won the first match against the “Battle of the Boulevard” rival Belmont in four sets. “Belmont is going to be one of the top three or four teams [in the conference],” said Lady Bisons coach Brandon Rosenthal. “Winning the way we did where we had to fight through [sets] three and four just adds a bit more confidence.” The Lady Bisons won the first two sets 25-19 and 25-18. Belmont fired back in the third set winning 25-23. “It was about execution,” said Rosenthal. “Whether we win the point or not we have to execute”. The Lady Bisons rallied behind seniors Alex Kelly, and Jake Pease to win the final match 25-15. “Alex and Jake are players and people who just want to win,” said Rosenthal. “They’re willing to do whatever it takes.” “During the fourth set the girls really settled down and served tough,” Rosenthal said. “The substitution of Claire Peterson was key there at the end of the match.” A win against Belmont is always extra special to the Lady Bisons. “I don’t take this for granted, and I don’t think the girls do,” coach Rosenthal said. “This is a rivalry. It runs deep for us.” The Lady Bisons travel to St. Louis this weekend for the Billiken...
