Lipscomb may have beaten Kennesaw State in an extra inning 4-3 victory Friday night, but the Owls answered back in the final two games of the series at Ken Dugan Field in Stephen L. Marsh Stadium. The first game of the series came with a walk-off win for the Bisons courtesy of senior Josh Lee. Lee hit the walk-off double in the bottom of the tenth inning. Freshman Jeffrey Crisan had an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth, and senior Jonathan Allison had two RBI’s in the bottom of the first and third. Lipscomb was hoping to carry the momentum from the first game into the rest of the series. In the second game on Saturday afternoon, the Owls answered back, defeating the Bisons 4-3. Senior Mike Korte had two RBI’s in the second and seventh innings. KSU had three runs scored in the fifth due to RBI’s by Alex Liquori and Grant Williams. An error by Lipscomb second baseman Korte also contributed to the Owl’s scoring. Liquori had an RBI single in the top of the eighth for the Owls. Junior Chucky Vazquez tried to get something going for Lipscomb in the bottom of the ninth by hitting a solo home run, but Lipscomb could not tack on any more runs. The Bisons were looking for a better result in the final game on Sunday. The final game of the series resulted in a 12-5 Owls victory. In a season that saw great improvement over the last, the 2014 Lipscomb Bisons’ baseball season came to an end on Sunday with a 7-1 loss to Kennesaw State in the Atlantic Sun Championship final. A win would have put the Bisons in a winner-take-all second match against Kennesaw State, with the victor advancing to the NCAA Tournament. Lipscomb posted a NCAA era school record for wins in a season with 33, and the Bisons also set a new team record for winning percentage with a 33-28 mark. The Bisons scored their lone run for the game in the second inning thanks to a hit from senior catcher Nick Rome that scored junior designated hitter Tyson Ashcraft. After an Owls scored a run in the third frame, the game remained knotted at one run apiece until Kennesaw scored three runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. The Bisons had two players, juniors Grant Massey and Ian Martinez-McGraw, earn All-Tournament honors. The Lipscomb baseball team advances to the 2014 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship Sunday after beating No. 1 Florida Gulf Coast University in two games Saturday. The Bisons had to play two games against Florida Gulf Coast at FGCU’s Swanson Stadium in Fort Myers, Florida. Lipscomb lost the first one 10-5. Gulf Coast’s bats came out hot. They scored three in the first and four in the second. Lipscomb junior infielder Grant Massey and junior pitcher/infielder Tyson Ashcraft both had two hits in game one. Ashcraft, freshman infielder Hunter Hanks, redshirt sophomore outfielder Josh Lee, senior catcher Nick Rome and redshirt freshman catcher Tyler Bethune each had one RBI. In game two, Lipscomb’s bats came alive. The Bisons beat Gulf Coast 11-4. Lee, Massey and senior outfielder Drew Adams had three hits apiece. Rome and Adams each had three RBIs. Junior pitcher Ian Martinez-McGraw threw a compete game. He gave up four runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts. The Lipscomb Bisons completed a three game sweep of the East Tennessee State Buccaneers over the weekend. In game one the Bisons’ bats came alive pounding out sixteen hits. “When the hits start to spread from hitter to hitter, one guy feeds off the other. Good things happen,” head coach Jeff Forehand said. The offensive attack for the Bisons was lead by a 5-for-5 night at the plate by junior left fielder Josh Lee and a 3-for-4 game by junior center fielder Jonathan Allison. Allison hit a home run over the left field wall to give the Bisons an early 1-0 and later recorded a base-clearing triple that brought home two more runs. Allison finished the game with three RBI’s. ETSU did not go down easy. They responded to the 5-0 lead by adding two runs of their own to trim the margin to three. In the 7th inning ETSU closed the gap even more by adding five more runs, but the Bisons were able to hang on for the 9-7 win. In game two of the series, ETSU ran into a pitcher on a mission. Hunter Brothers pitched his first career complete game shut out. “When you get that performance that is all you need. He dominated from start to finish,” Forehand said. The Lipscomb Bisons baseball team made a big statement this weekend against the University of Connecticut by taking two of the three games played. The Bisons pushed the Huskies to the brink in game one of the series by forcing extra innings, but failed to execute when it came down to the end. Junior shortstop Grant Massey did, however, launch his first home run of the year in the second inning to give the Bisons a 2-0 lead that eventually faded. UConn got on the board in the fifth inning after third baseman Bryan Daniello laced a line drive into the right field corner and eventually scored on an infield ground out. The Huskies took their first lead of the game in the seventh after putting several at bats together. Max McDowell was hit by a pitch and moved into scoring position. He was then driven home by a single to left field. UConn continually executed when they needed to. The Huskies capitalized on some Bison mistakes which lead them to the 6-4 extra inning victory. In game two of the series, the Bisons were in familiar territory. They once again forced UConn into extra innings and this timed executed. Senior designated hitter Chad Shannon drew a bases loaded walk in the tenth inning to give Lipscomb the 4-3-comeback win. The Bisons got a good start to the tenth inning after Massey bounced a double off the center field wall.
