Freshman Ellen Lundy has already recorded big accomplishments and made several memories during her first season on the Lady Bisons soccer team. Lundy finished the regular season as the Atlantic Sun co-leader in points with 31. The freshman standout scored 14 goals overall, setting a Lipscomb record for most goals in a season. She was also recently ranked number 68 on Top Drawer Soccer’s top 100 freshman list. And, this past weekend, she had a major role in helping the Lady Bison reach their first appearance in the conference tournament in school history. Lundy hails from Rogers, Ark. She says her decision to come to Lipscomb was an easy one. “When I came on my visit, I loved the culture and community of the school,” Lundy said. “Then, I met the girls and coaches, who were so awesome. It was just encouraging and easy.” Entering the biggest stage of her career yet, Lundy wanted to prove she belonged at the collegiate level. “I didn’t know what to expect coming in, but I just wanted to prove I could play at the Division I level and accomplish my goal of helping contribute to the team anyway I could. I feel like I did that,” Lundy said. One of Lundy’s favorite moments of the season was the Lady Bison big 2-1 win over Mercer, who is the defending A-Sun champion. Lundy scored both goals with the game-winner coming in the 83rd minute. “Looking back, when we beat Mercer was a huge win for us that kick started our season and gave us energy and hope that we could make the tournament,” Lundy said. Women’s soccer made history Sunday afternoon as they advanced for the first time in program history to the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament. The chips fell into the right places on Sunday just minutes before the Bisons took the field against USC Upstate. In order to advance, the team would have to win against Upstate–at the time ranked 10th, and Northern Kentucky–9th — would have to tie or beat ETSU–8th– on Sunday to be finished before the Bison’s game-time. Freshman Ellen Lundy says that even though the scores were in, the coaches did not tell the players until halftime that they now controlled their own fate. “They just said, ‘Hey, ETSU lost,’ . . . okay, now let’s focus on us,” Lundy said. At the half, the Bisons were tied 1-1 and finished the game with a steady lead of 4-1. This year’s team has been blowing out the record books both individually and as a team. Besides making the tournament, the team has also set the record for number of wins in a season with six. Assistant Coach Chris Klotz said that the team has worked so hard and has earned this berth. “These girls have battled all year long and it’s so well-deserved,” Klotz said. “I am overcome with emotion. I am just so pumped for these girls.” With Sunday being senior day, the team honored three seniors, Kelsey Reiman, Callie Cavanaugh and Stephanie Romero. Before the semester becomes too overloaded with events and calendars gets completely booked, Lumination would like to offer a handy guide to all of the events coming up during the fall semester. September looks to bring a full slate of men’s and women’s soccer games. Pledge week also kicks off in September as Bid Night took place Sept. 12. Some of Lipscomb’s most anticipated events begin in October starting with the Tau Phi Cowboy show on Oct. 5, Paint the Herd on Oct. 30 and Haunted High Rise scaring students on Oct. 30. The women’s volleyball schedule kicks into high gear during October as well. Lipscomb’s annual Dodgeball tournament will start November off with a bang. The men’s basketball team will open up their season against Belmont with the Battle of the Boulevard against rival Belmont on Nov. 8, followed by the women’s Battle less than a week later on Nov. 14. Everything from sporting events across all sports to special Student Activities Board sponsored events, to usual favorites like Wednesday Night We Eat are taking place throughout the next few months, making Lipscomb’s campus a busy place. After Thursday night’s nail-biter against Kennesaw State, the men’s basketball team served up another to-the-buzzer contest, but this time, last-minute heroics couldn’t save the day. The Bisons (now 8-12) put up quite a fight against Mercer, but unfortunately, the visiting Bears (13-9) claimed victory by game’s end. After a quick start (Mercer opened with a three in the first 10 seconds), the Bisons gained an early lead on the Bears, but as time progressed, the game became an level playing field, with a three-pointer courtesy of senior Deonte Alexander sending both teams to a 23-23 ballgame at the half. In the second, the Bears became the dominant team on the court, looking at a 61-46 lead over the Bisons with 7:27 remaining. Despite the looming margin, the Bisons weren’t about to let this one go. In the six-or-so minutes to follow, key Bison shots were made, key Bear shots were missed and Lipscomb rallied back to a 7-point margin with just about a minute left in play. A crucial 4-point play by Alexander shrunk the Bear’s lead to three with 41 seconds left, but despite the Bisons’ strong showing in the game’s final minutes, Mercer escaped with the win. Alexander had a strong night, leading the Bisons in scoring with 20. Junior Khion Sankey led the team in rebounding with 12, and sophomore Malcom Smith added in 16 points. Alexander said that he’s always looking to the next play in a close game’s final minutes, also concentrating on his defensive role. “I’m just trying my best to not let my man score,” Alexander said. The softball team faced one the best pitchers in the nation on Saturday; that, however, would not slow them down on their way to improve their conference record to 4-0 Game 1 It was an old fashioned pitchers’ duel on Saturday afternoon as Lipscomb’s Whitney Kiihnl and Upstate’s Morgan Childers went head-to-head at Draper Diamond. Going into the weekend Kiihnl and Childers ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in hits given up per game. The two pitchers lived up to their rankings until the fourth inning when Lipscomb got on the board via a Mollie Mitchell single that brought in Kellie Sirus. Sirus reached base on a hit-by-pitch. With Kiihnl in the zone, Lipscomb added three more runs to their side of the board in the fifth. Lauren Dortwegt started off the inning with a single to center, followed by a sacrifice bunt by Tucker. Dortwegt then scored on a single courtesy of Abby Keese. Sirus then doubled to left, scoring Keese. Sirus reached third on a Courtney Billington sacrifice fly to right field. Christen Campbell then doubled to left, scoring Sirus. After the fifth, Kiihnl shut down Upstate for two more innings, giving the Lady Bisons a 4-0 win. Kiihnl pitched 7 innings, allowing five hits and striking out 8. Game 2 In game two of the afternoon, Kiihnl showed Upstate that she could not only pitch, but also swing the bat well.
