Open Letter to the Student Body:

My name is Drew Watson and I am running for President of the Student Government Association 2014-2015. I am a Junior Business Management major from Loganville, Georgia.

Qualifications:

Last year I was elected Vice President of the Student Body. In this position, I have learned a lot about what is required of a SGA executive. Working along side the standing president, Andrew Hunt, has been a great experience. I have been on SGA for two years and my experience will help me tremendously if elected. Rather than learning about my duties and learning about the system, my experience will allow me to hit the ground running.

I have sought to serve the students for years. I have been a part of both the Student Activities Board and Student Government for two years. The President of the student body should be a means of service. During my service to these organizations my goal has been simple: give an incredible and unforgettable college experience to those around me.

I am a motivated individual. Since I was young, I have had a competitive drive. I’ve recently constructed official proposals that directly affect student as well as the internal functions of SGA. I drafted a proposal concerning mandatory night classes for certain majors that resulted in a productive conversation with the Provost. I promise, that if elected, I will continue to actively seek ways to better the student experience at this institution.

If Elected:

Communication between the SGA and the Student Body is an issue brought up during every election, but I have concrete ideas for how to improve for the students. How can we advocate when we don’t know what the students want? We can’t! My experience has shown me that in order to have an effective SGA:

1)     The leader of the SGA should be immersed on campus with many different types of students. I have made it a goal in my 3 years here to meet people from all over the board: different clubs, ethnicities, majors, places of origin, and personalities. I feel that I have the ability to represent students on a broad scale.

2)     The second way to get into the heads of the Students is through surveys. Although they may seem boring or trivial at times, it is one of the most effective ways to get an accurate read of what the students want. My goal would be to have at least one campus-wide survey a semester to gage in what ways that SGA can improve.

I am interested in looking into the idea of hosting a large scale Spring Concert in Allen and opening it to the public in order to get a big name. I’m not promising this will happen, but I would love to explore the possibility.

Internally I would like to continue to explore how SGA can get a hand in more areas of students on campus. With only 3 committees for senators to join (Social, Spiritual, and Academic), many groups of students and issues fall between the gaps and the result is unrepresented groups. I would like to see every area of campus represented and spoken for.

I am confident that I could do an exceptional job serving as next years SGA President. Make your voice heard and vote for Drew Watson this Wednesday!
