Open Letter to the Student Body:

Hey, everyone! My naScreen shot 2015-04-03 at 10.06.47 PM-2me is Hannah Passamonte, and I am a junior Business Management major from Maui, Hawaii. I am honored to be running for Vice President of the Student Government Association for the upcoming school year.

I want to be your next Vice President because I am passionate about people and Lipscomb. I am committed to serving and advocating for the student body and believe that my personality and skill set allow me to do this best in a leadership position on SGA.

I am qualified. I am active in Student Government and other campus student groups, which has allowed me to gain a greater understanding of what is required of an SGA executive and what it means to represent the diversity of our student body. A leader on SGA must be able to represent this school on a large scale, and I feel that I am best fit to do so. My goal since freshman year has been to get involved on campus and to surround myself with many different types of students. I have succeeded in doing this, and I am determined to represent this university not as one major, social club, sports team or school stereotype, but as a whole; because I believe it is our different interests, personalities and opinions that matter and should be portrayed.

Having worked for Lipscomb Admissions and as a member of the Presidential Ambassador Council, I enjoy meeting with and am very comfortable approaching those who work in administration. We need SGA executives that are well-connected and trusted by administration in order to facilitate communication and accomplish goals as a student body and student government.

I would consider myself ambitious yet realistic. If elected, I want to continue working on projects that our graduating President and Vice President have worked hard to achieve, but I also have new ideas to enhance the Lipscomb student experience.

Communication:

I truly want to see the voices of students come to life in Lipscomb’s curriculum, policy and campus life. In order to achieve this we need to come up with better ways to hear from you. Besides giving you all campus wide surveys to fill out, I would love to see the following:

  • The creation of a central Lipscomb app that can be used around campus and gives students a line of communication with SGA
  • The creation of an SGA blog so that students can get up-to-date information on SGA meetings and new proposals made by students and other Lipscomb organizations

Main things I would like to look further into:

  • The continued pursuit of allowing summer tuition to be allotted to either fall or spring semester.
  • A new and improved comeback of a free campus shuttle. Public transportation means less money spent on gas, and more free parking spaces.
  • Allowing opportunities for students to be more active and healthy:
    • Expanding our current gym within the SAC or in dorms across campus
    • Exploring healthy and fresh choices to add to the food court in the student center or to our off campus dining selection
  • Combating food waste in the campus cafeteria
  • Exploring slight policy changes to our student handbook, specifically those related to housing and room visitation rights for students of the opposite sex.

I am excited for this upcoming school year and for the future of our Student Government Association. I am confident in my ability to serve you as a student body and would love the opportunity to do so as your next SGA Vice President. This election is about you and your voice, so let it be heard this Tuesday. Thank you in advance for your vote!
